Chapter 9 of 10

Blood Override

The three ruby dots burned against Yenik's chest. Karsk’s voice scraped through the cold scrub, and from Urdak’s throat came a sharp, gagging heave. Then, the ground beneath them vibrated. Not the hum of machinery, but a resonant frequency that seemed to bypass their ears, vibrating directly into the marrow of their bones. Riksa’s sigil, a brand on her wrist, flared with a searing heat, brighter than any aurora, and a sharp, metallic tang filled her mouth. It was the taste of copper and ozone. Her muscles seized. It began with her left arm, locking into a rigid extension, then her right leg, planting itself with involuntary force. A cold, alien presence flooded her nervous system, overriding every impulse, every thought. She was a puppet, and the strings were taut, pulling her limbs into a predetermined dance. Beside her, Urdak roared. It was a different sound now, not the pain of mutation, but a guttural snarl of defiance quickly choked into a whimpering groan. His hulking form began to contort. One clawed hand, impossibly strong, moved with a sickening slowness, rising to grasp his other arm. His head craned sideways, breath hissing past yellowed teeth as his body, against his own will, began to tear at itself. “No!” Yenik shrieked, his voice thin against the wind, his small hands flying up to cover his face as the laser sights pulsed on his chest. He saw Riksa’s rigid, unnatural posture, Urdak’s struggling form. He understood. Riksa’s vision blurred with static. Her fingers, no longer her own, fumbled at her belt, drawing the honed edge of her frost-steel hunting knife. The blade felt cold and heavy. Her arm lifted, stiff and precise, pointing the tip not at Karsk, not at the Spire, but at Urdak. Through the roaring static, Karsk’s voice became a triumphant sneer. “The final phase, Riksa! Two protectors, tethered by blood, now forced to consume each other. A magnificent feedback loop, wouldn’t you agree? Yenik’s empathetic core will then be all too easy to harvest.” The words cut through the neural static like shards of ice. *Consume each other.* Riksa’s mind, trapped within her own skull, raced. *My cold tactics. My need to dictate every move. Every calculated move, every preemptive strike… it all led to this. I walked them right into his trap. I delivered Yenik to him.* The truth, stark and brutal, slammed into her. Her singular focus on keeping Yenik safe, on cataloging every variable, had rendered her utterly blind to the true nature of their bondage. She had fought *against* Zhelezo, but she had fought *within* their parameters. Her body moved. Her feet scraped against the snow, dragging her forward, the knife a gleaming extension of Karsk’s will. Urdak, his own body twisting in agony as his immense strength was turned against him, met her gaze. Not with accusation, but with a profound, terrifying sorrow. *He chose this for me,* Riksa thought, a sliver of her own consciousness screaming against the override. *He let me lead, even when it was wrong. He trusted me.* And in that realization, a cold clarity pierced the fog of the Combine’s intrusion. There was one variable Karsk couldn't account for, one she had hidden even from herself: the feral, desperate core of her own self-preservation, now twisted into something entirely new. Her hand, still Karsk’s puppet, raised the knife higher. It was aimed at Urdak’s shoulder, a precise, debilitating strike. But her own will, raw and unyielding, ignited in a silent, internal scream. A sudden, unexpected surge of defiance. She would not be his instrument. She would not butcher the one being who saw past her scars, who protected Yenik with a loyalty she hadn't earned. With a strength that ripped through the Combine’s imposed pathways, a searing pain, Riksa twisted her wrist. Not to parry, not to defend, but to redirect. The trajectory shifted, just an inch, then two. The frost-steel blade, instead of arcing towards Urdak, plunged into her own chest, sinking deep between her ribs. A gasp tore from her lips, her own voice, not Karsk’s. The world exploded into white-hot pain, then a sudden, profound silence. The command sigil on her wrist went dark, its searing heat replaced by the chill of seeping blood. Her vision flickered, blurring at the edges, the crimson targeting beams on Yenik's chest winking out as if doused. The metallic tang in her mouth became a coppery flood. The paralysis shattered. Urdak, freed from the invisible shackles, let out a guttural, earth-shaking howl of grief and fury. It was a sound that tore through the very fabric of the desolate landscape, a raw, primeval cry that spoke of betrayal and loss. His eyes, now burning with unbridled light, fixed on the distant Spire. He saw Yenik, frozen in terror, watching Riksa fall. Blood bloomed on Riksa’s scavenged coat, a dark stain spreading across the white snow. Her legs buckled. Yenik’s scream, shrill and heartbroken, tore through the air as she crumpled, the cold seeping into her rapidly cooling skin. Her pulse, a frantic drum a moment ago, faltered. The world spun, then faded to grey. Karsk’s voice, now a frantic snarl, screeched from the speakers, “What in the name of the Combine…?! Optics are down! She severed the link! Retrieve the boy, NOW!” Urdak didn't hesitate. With a final, deafening roar, a beast unbound and fueled by an inferno of rage, he turned from Riksa’s still form and charged. His mutated limbs blurred, tearing through the snow with impossible speed, a living avalanche of vengeance hurtling towards the reinforced bunker of the Zhelezo Control Spire, leaving a trail of disturbed snow and raw power in his wake.
