Chapter 9: The Price of Loyalty

1.6k words

Gunfire shattered the heavy silence of the grand foyer. Plaster exploded from the walls, raining white dust over the polished marble floors like a sudden snowstorm. The air turned instantly thick with the acrid, biting scent of burnt gunpowder. Marcel shoved me behind his massive frame, his grip on my wrist like an iron shackle. He didn't flinch as bullets whipped through the air, splintering the mahogany doorframe just inches from his head. His muscles coiled beneath his tailored black suit, hard as granite. I could feel the violent tension vibrating through his body, a silent promise of absolute destruction. Cold sweat beaded on my collarbone as I clung to the back of his jacket, my fingers tearing at the expensive fabric. Fear tasted like copper in my mouth, but the warmth of his body was my only anchor in the chaos. Across the ruined entryway stood Emilio, his cruel eyes gleaming with twisted amusement as his men formed a tight semicircle around him. Dozens of armed men flanked him, their automatic weapons pointed directly at us, ready to paint the walls red on a single command. He held a crumpled piece of paper in his scarred hand, waving it like a trophy of war. "She’s mine, Marcel," Emilio sneered, his voice cutting through the ringing in my ears like a serrated knife. "Her father signed her over to me to clear his millions in debts three days before you dragged her here to your palace." My heart plummeted into a dark, frozen abyss at his words, the breath entirely leaving my lungs. Marcel didn't speak immediately. His jaw clenched so hard a vein throbbed violently at his temple, his breathing shallow and dangerous. "She belongs to me," Marcel growled, his voice dropping to a low, lethal pitch that vibrated right through my chest. "If you want her, you’ll have to drag her out of my cold, dead hands." Emilio threw his head back and laughed, a mocking sound that echoed off the high, vaulted ceilings. "Who would have thought the cold-blooded Marcel had a heart?" Emilio mocked, stepping forward. "And for a toy like her. Her father laughed when he sold her to me, Marcel. He said she was useless anyway, just a pretty face to clear a bad ledger." Betrayal cut deeper than any physical blade could have. My own father had treated me like currency, a worthless token to be traded to monsters to save his own skin. Tears blurred my vision, hot and stinging against my cheeks as the world spun around me. Marcel noticed my silent breakdown. His large hand slipped back, finding mine and squeezing it so tightly my bones ached. "Don't listen to him, piccolo," he whispered, never breaking eye contact with Emilio. His touch was surprisingly warm, grounding me in the middle of this absolute nightmare. Emilio raised his gun, pointing it directly at Marcel's forehead. "You think you came here with the upper hand in your own house?" Marcel mocked, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his lips. "Look down, Emilio." Three bright red laser sights suddenly appeared on Emilio's chest, centering perfectly over his heart. Another dozen red dots painted the foreheads of his men, completely still and unwavering. "One word," Marcel whispered, leaning forward, his eyes flashing with sadistic pleasure. "One word from me, and your brains will decorate my entryway. Now, get the hell off my property." "Your entire syndicate will know you broke the ancient pact for a useless girl," Emilio hissed, his face turning pale as he slowly lowered his weapon. With a sharp gesture, Emilio and his men retreated back into the darkness of the estate grounds, disappearing into the night. --- Heavy steel doors slid shut behind us, locking out the chaos of the mansion as Marcel guided me into the underground safe room. This was his inner sanctum, a luxurious bunker designed for ultimate survival, filled with soft leather furniture and dim, warm lighting. I stood in the center of the room, shivering violently despite the warmth radiating from the fireplace. Marcel stripped off his ruined suit jacket, tossing it onto a nearby chair with a heavy sigh. His white shirt was stretched tight across his broad shoulders, a faint smear of soot on his sleeve. He turned to look at me, his intense gaze scanning my body for any signs of physical harm. "Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice rough with lingering adrenaline. I shook my head, unable to speak as the tears finally spilled over my eyelashes in torrents. "My father..." I choked out, the word tasting like poison on my tongue. "He really sold me? Like some piece of meat to be traded between you monsters?" He crossed the room in two long strides, grabbing my upper arms and pulling me flush against his hard chest. "Listen to me," he growled, his face inches from mine, his dark eyes burning with fierce intensity. "Your father is a dead man walking. But you are not his anymore. You are mine." "I don't care about his debts. I don't care about his contracts." "You belong to this house. You belong to me." His possessive words should have terrified me, but instead, they brought a strange, healing warmth to my shattered heart. For the first time in my life, someone was fighting to keep me, not to sell me away to the highest bidder. Desperation took over, fueled by the near-death experience and the raw emotion of betrayal. My hands reached for his shirt, gripping the fabric as I pulled him down to me, begging for his touch. Marcel let out a low growl, his arms wrapping around my waist like steel bands as he lifted me effortlessly. He carried me to the massive bed in the corner of the room, laying me down on the silk sheets. We fell into a tangle of limbs and gasping breaths, our clothes discarded in frantic, desperate movements. He stripped away the red silk nightgown I wore, his eyes burning with an intense, raw hunger as his gaze swept over my bare skin. "Beautiful," he muttered, his voice thick with desire. His lips traced a path down my throat, leaving dark, purple marks of his ownership that made me gasp and arch into his touch. I cried out his name as his hands explored every inch of my body, claiming me entirely. The pain of my father's betrayal melted away under the heat of his touch, replaced by a consuming passion. Every touch was a declaration. Every kiss was a vow of protection. He made love to me with a fierce, possessive intensity that left me breathless and completely undone. We moved together in a rhythm as old as time, our hearts beating in unison against our chests. When the storm finally passed, I lay collapsed against his broad chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. --- Sleep eventually claimed him, his harsh features softening in the dim light of the safe room. I remained awake, staring into the shadows, my mind racing with everything that had happened. I had fallen in love with my captor, a dangerous mafia don who had taken me by force. Yet, in his arms, I felt safer than I ever had in my father's house. A soft buzz broke the quiet of the room. Marcel's encrypted phone on the nightstand vibrated, its screen lighting up the dark room with a pale blue glow. Curiosity and a lingering sense of dread drove me to sit up. I carefully slipped out of his warm embrace, shivering slightly as the cool air hit my bare skin. Stepping quietly to the nightstand, I picked up the heavy black device. A message from an unsaved number was displayed on the screen, containing an attached video file. I pressed play, keeping the volume as low as possible so as not to wake the sleeping giant beside me. Screen static flickered, revealing my father sitting in a familiar high-backed chair in a luxurious office. He wasn't bound, and he didn't look like a man running for his life from the mafia. He was smiling, holding a glass of expensive whiskey. "Hello, Aya," his voice came through the small speaker, sending a chill straight down my spine. "If you are watching this, it means our plan worked perfectly." "Marcel believes he rescued you, and he has hidden you in his most secure vault." "Which means you are currently standing right where we need you to be to unlock his entire empire from the inside." My breath hitched, my heart stopping completely as the realization hit me like a physical blow. I stared at the screen, my hands trembling so violently I could barely hold the phone. "Now, activate the transmitter in your necklace, my darling, and let us finish this." My fingers slowly reached up, brushing against the delicate gold necklace Marcel had given me—or was it the one my father had gifted me before the kidnapping? My eyes widened in sheer horror as a tiny, blinking red light suddenly flared to life inside the gold pendant, casting a bloody glow over my trembling hands. Behind me, the bed rustled, and the cold, demanding voice of Marcel cut through the dark. "Aya, what are you doing with my phone?"
