Chapter 31: A New Horizon
1.3k words
Marcel's knuckles whitened around his phone. A blurred image of their villa's gate, a familiar symbol spray-painted on the stone, burned into his retina. His blood ran cold. The message beneath it was short, brutal: "Found you."
Aya gasped, her eyes fixed on the screen over his shoulder. Her breath hitched, a small, terrified sound. The idyllic bubble they’d built around themselves burst, shattered by the chilling reality of their past.
"What is it?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her hand flew to her mouth, trembling. The playful light in her eyes vanished, replaced by a deep, unsettling fear.
Marcel's jaw tightened. He crushed the phone in his grip, the plastic groaning. He had known this day might come, but he had hoped, foolishly, for more time. He had hoped for forever.
"It's nothing," he lied, his voice a low growl, attempting to shield her. "Just a prank. Ignore it."
She shook her head, tears welling. "No. I saw it. That symbol... it's them, isn't it? They found us." Her gaze locked onto his, pleading. "Marcel, I can't live like this anymore. Always looking over our shoulder. Always waiting for the next attack."
Himself, he felt a familiar rage ignite, a predator's instinct to hunt and destroy. But one look at Aya's terrified face extinguished it, replacing it with a desperate need to protect her, to give her the peace she craved.
"What do you want, habibti?" he asked, his voice softening, pulling her into his arms. Her body trembled against his, a silent plea.
"I want to leave," she sobbed, burying her face against his chest. "Leave everything behind. This house, this country, this life. I want to go somewhere new. Somewhere far away. Italy. We could start over in Italy. A quiet life. Away from… away from all of this."
Marcel's heart ached. The mafia was all he had ever known, his empire built on blood and loyalty. Walking away felt like tearing a part of his soul out. Yet, her words echoed in his mind. A quiet life. For her. He would do anything for her.
"Promise me," she pulled back, her eyes red-rimmed but determined. "Promise me, Marcel. No more. No more mafia. No more danger. Just us. A real life. Peaceful. You have to promise me nothing will happen to us. That this road will never call us back."
His gaze held hers, unwavering. The weight of her request was immense, a seismic shift in his entire existence. "I promise you, Aya. Nothing will touch you. No shadows from my past will find us there. I will cut every tie. Every single one. We will have our peace. Together."
Days blurred into a flurry of frantic preparations. Marcel moved with a ruthless efficiency Aya had only glimpsed before. Calls were made, assets liquidated, properties discreetly sold. He systematically dismantled his empire, a king abdicating his throne for love.
Each evening, exhausted, he would find solace in Aya's arms. Their intimacy deepened, a silent language of reassurance and desperate hope. His hands would roam her curves, claiming, soothing. Her touch was fire, erasing the day's stress. He’d whisper reassurances against her skin, promising a future free from fear.
"You're so tense," she'd tease, her fingers tracing the hard line of his jaw. "Come here, big boss. Let me relax you." Her lips would find his, soft, then demanding, melting away the edges of his world.
Marcel would lose himself in her, their bodies entwining in a desperate embrace. "You're my only weakness, habibti," he’d growl, his voice rough with desire, as he moved against her. "My absolute undoing. And my salvation." Her giggles would fill the room, a sweet melody against his ear.
"Just wait until Italy," she'd whisper, her breath hot on his neck. "You won't know what hit you. I'm going to make you forget you ever had a life before me, before *us*."
Soon, they were on a private jet, soaring above the clouds, leaving behind a life Marcel had built and Aya had endured. The past dwindled into a distant memory beneath them, a dark chapter closing.
Italy welcomed them with sunshine and ancient charm. They settled in a secluded villa overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, a place of breathtaking beauty and profound quiet. The scent of lemon groves and salt air replaced the sterile smell of their old compound. The only sounds were the distant waves and Aya’s laughter.
Their new life unfolded like a dream. Mornings were for lazy breakfasts on the terrace, Marcel learning to make Aya’s favorite coffee. Afternoons were spent exploring quaint coastal towns, holding hands like carefree tourists, or simply lounging by their infinity pool, soaking in the sun.
Warm evenings brought gourmet meals cooked by a private chef, or sometimes, by Marcel himself, clumsily but with immense pride, much to Aya’s amusement. They talked for hours, about nothing and everything, their bond strengthening with every shared smile, every stolen kiss.
Laughter was a constant presence. Marcel discovered a side of himself he never knew existed – playful, tender, openly affectionate. Aya, in turn, blossomed, her eyes sparkling with a joy that had been dimmed by fear for so long.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues, they sat on a cliffside bench, a bottle of local wine between them. Aya leaned her head on Marcel's shoulder, a contented sigh escaping her lips.
"Marcel," she murmured, her voice soft. "This is everything I ever wanted. More than I ever dared to dream of. Thank you."
He turned, gently lifting her chin, his eyes locking onto hers, full of an emotion that stole her breath. "My love," he began, his voice deeper than usual, "you deserve all the peace, all the happiness, all the love in the world. And I intend to give it to you."
He reached into his pocket, his hand emerging with a small, velvet box. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Marcel got down on one knee, his gaze never leaving her face. The sea breeze ruffled his dark hair. A single, perfect diamond glittered in the fading light.
"This life we've built, this future... it's just the beginning. Aya, my everything, my soulmate, my peace... Marry me. Be my wife. Make this new horizon permanent. Make us forever."
Her eyes welled up, but this time, they were tears of pure joy. A choked sob escaped her. She didn't need to think. She didn't need to breathe. Just say yes.
"Yes!" she cried, throwing her arms around him, nearly toppling them both off the bench. "A thousand times, yes, Marcel!"
His laughter, deep and resonant, filled the air as he crushed her against him, kissing her with a fierce passion that promised eternity. He slipped the ring onto her finger, its cold weight a beautiful, tangible symbol of their new beginning.
They spent the night celebrating, their love a blazing fire against the tranquil backdrop of the sea. Whispers of dirty promises, playful taunts, and declarations of undying affection punctuated their fervent lovemaking. He adored her, worshipped her, made her feel like the only woman in the universe. Her body sang under his touch, responding with unrestrained desire, confirming their undeniable connection.
Weeks turned into a blissful routine of shared moments and growing affection. Aya found herself humming often, a lightness in her step. Marcel was a different man, softer, more openly loving, yet his presence still commanded a primal strength that thrilled her.
A small package arrived one afternoon, delivered by a local courier. It was wrapped in plain brown paper, addressed simply to 'Aya'. Her name, in a neat, unfamiliar script. She opened it, her brow furrowing slightly. Inside, nestled on a bed of tissue paper, was a delicate silver locket. Beautiful, intricate. But as she turned it over, a tiny, almost imperceptible engraving on the back caught her eye. It was the same symbol, subtly rendered, that had been spray-painted on their old gate. Her hand trembled, the locket suddenly heavy in her palm.
