Novel AI Pricing 2026: Every Plan, Credit and Hidden Cost

Most pricing pages for AI writing tools answer the wrong question. They tell you the monthly fee and leave you to find out later how many words that actually buys. This breakdown goes the other way: what one chapter costs, how many chapters a plan really covers, and at what point paying beats staying free.

The short version: reading is free forever with no account. Writing runs on credits, and a committed free user can earn up to 160 of them a day without paying anything. Subscriptions start at $2.99 a week.

What a credit buys

Credits are the unit of account for everything the AI generates. Reading never costs credits.

The three chapter tiers are the part most reviews miss, and they matter more than the subscription you pick. They are not marketing labels for the same model: they differ in how much reasoning the AI is allowed to do before it writes a word.

Sketch, Story and Saga: which chapter tier to use

Sketch - 12 credits

No planning step. The model writes straight through in about ten seconds. Prose is clean but the plot stays on rails, so it is best for filler chapters, transitional scenes, or drafting quickly when you intend to rewrite later. At 12 credits, a day of free earning buys more than a dozen of them.

Story - 20 credits

The default, and the tier included in subscription quotas. The model plans before writing, which is what keeps a chapter consistent with the ones before it. Roughly fifteen seconds per chapter. If you are unsure, this is the one to use - it is the setting every author gets unless they change it.

Saga - 65 credits

Substantially more reasoning before writing, and it shows up in structure rather than vocabulary: better payoffs, tighter foreshadowing, fewer moments where the chapter forgets what the last one established. It costs more than five Sketch chapters, so it is worth spending on the chapters that carry weight - a climax, a reveal, a first chapter that has to hook a reader - and not on every chapter in a 100-chapter run.

A practical pattern: Story for the body of the book, Saga for chapter one and the act endings, Sketch for connective tissue. That mix costs far less than running everything at Saga and reads better than running everything at Sketch.

How far the free tier actually goes

A single day of free credits is worth about 160, with no card. That is one novel foundation with cover art plus a first chapter, or four Sketch chapters. It is enough to find out whether the output suits you, which is the point of it.

Credits refill through daily activity rather than a paywall:

• Daily check-in streak - 5 to 30 credits, on a seven-day cycle where day seven pays 30
• Reading time - 5 credits at 15 minutes, 10 at 30 minutes, 30 at 60 minutes
• Rewarded ads - 10 credits each, up to 10 a day
• Social follows - 10 credits each, one time, for Facebook, TikTok and YouTube

Maxed out, that is about 160 credits a day: eight Story chapters, or thirteen Sketch chapters. The honest caveat is that collecting all of it takes real time - an hour of reading plus ten ad breaks is not free, it is paid in attention. If your hour is worth more than $2.99, a subscription is the cheaper trade.

Subscriptions: Advanced, Pro and Premium

There are three subscription tiers, and they do not differ by how many credits they hand out. They differ by what stops costing credits at all.

Advanced - from $2.99 a week

Ad-free reading, every chapter in the library unlocked, and audiobook narration using your device's built-in voice. It does not include a daily AI allowance, so generation still spends credits at the rates above. This is the reader's plan: worth it if you mostly read and occasionally write.

The same structure with roughly double the daily ceiling: 120 chapters, 18 novel foundations, 120 translations and 35 AI narrations per day. Only worth it if you are regularly hitting the Pro limits, which most authors never do.

Buying credits outright

If you would rather not subscribe, credits sell in one-time packs. There is no expiry and no auto-renewal.

The larger packs are cheaper per credit, but the arithmetic that matters is chapters, not credits: the $9.99 pack is 50 Story chapters, and the $49.99 pack is 250. Compare that against a Pro month at $24.99 with 60 chapters a day and the subscription only wins if you genuinely write most days.

How that compares to other AI writing tools

The category standard is $10 to $25 a month with no usable free tier for generation. NovelAI starts at $10 and is built around text continuation rather than finished books. Sudowrite starts at $19 for its Hobby tier. Jasper is priced for marketing teams and shows it.

Two differences are worth naming plainly. First, Novel AI Studio is the only one of these where you can produce a complete novel - outline, chapters, cover - without entering a card. Second, it is the only one where the reading library has value on its own, so the app is still worth having open on a day you do not write.

Where it loses: it is mobile-first, so a desktop-only writer with an existing manuscript will find Sudowrite or NovelCrafter fits their workflow better. It is built for starting and finishing books inside the app, not for editing something you wrote elsewhere.

So is it worth paying for?

If you read more than you write, Advanced at $2.99 a week pays for itself on the ads alone, and the lifetime option at $59.99 is the cheapest way to stop seeing them permanently.

If you write a few chapters a week, stay free. The daily earning rates genuinely cover that pace, and paying would buy capacity you will not use.

If you are writing most days and finishing books, Pro at $24.99 a month is the point where the maths turns: 60 Story chapters a day against a credit cost of 20 each means the subscription pays back within the first two days of any month you actually use it.

The one thing not to do is buy Premium first. Start on Pro, and upgrade only after you have hit its ceiling on a real writing day - which is a much rarer event than it sounds.
