American doll
By @Dylan Bohrer
21-year-old Mary Ann Davis, her mind fractured by a lifetime of abuse and advanced schizophrenia, accidentally kills her estranged father. In a twisted attempt to reclaim a stolen childhood and forge connections she never had, she embalms his corpse, dresses him in a macabre rotation of outfits, and keeps him company in the attic of their New Orleans home. Her psychosis deepens, blurring the lines between reality and delusion, until she begins to roleplay him as a lover. One chilling night, an act of disturbing intimacy leaves her pregnant. As her delusion births a new life, the oppressive humidity of 2026 New Orleans closes in, and the American government's watchful eyes narrow, threatening to shatter her fragile, self-made world.
