The Refraction Mandate: Blinding the Imperial Court
By @john1208
Shen Lanyin, a brilliant optical engineer, wakes up as the despised illegitimate daughter of an aristocratic clan, banished to the freezing, perpetually shadowed Jue-Ming Gorge. Her exile is meant to be a slow death sentence, serving as a political hostage to Wei Jingzhe, the empire's ruthless spymaster whose rumored 'demonic curse' makes his skin burn in daylight. But Lanyin refuses to die in the dark. Using polished ice, bronze, and rudimentary glass, she constructs a massive heliostat array to route life-saving sunlight into the gorge. When she realizes the spymaster's 'curse' is merely severe photophobia, she crafts polarized quartz lenses that allow the terrifying lord to walk in the sun, earning his absolute protection. Together, they weaponize the physics of light - using camera obscura to fake divine omens, periscopes to spy on assassins, and optical telegraphs to outpace the Emperor's intelligence network. But when her corrupt family deploys a massive, chemically induced smoke-screen to plunge the capital into a 'cursed eclipse' and stage a coup, can Lanyin engineer a solar weapon powerful enough to shatter their illusions before the empire falls?
