Bound in Brass and Shadow
By @john1208
Osenya Yulva is running out of breath and places to hide. The opening chase through the smog-choked alleys of Tarnoch forces her into a desperate choice: face the dreaded labor pits, or forge a marriage certificate to qualify for a factory housing allocation. She chooses the latter, binding herself to Jorik Harlen, a disgraced scholar harboring his own secrets. Their new home in the monolithic Blackloom Tenements is deeply unsettling - walls whisper, and neighbors vanish without a trace. Yet, amidst the creeping dread, a profound domestic warmth blooms. Told in close third person on Osenya, we watch her proud, prickly exterior melt as she and Jorik spend late nights huddled by a single candle, budgeting their meager brass tokens and coal chits. The turning point arrives when they realize they no longer want to save for separate futures - they want this marriage to last forever. But Osenya's flight from the slum wardens and Jorik's investigation into forbidden underground ruins are about to violently collide. The factory housing isn't just a building; it's a trap built directly over the ancient ruins Jorik was exiled for studying. Can they survive the encroaching shadows to protect the home they've built?
