The Matron's Legacy
By @john1208
Elara Vance, a pragmatic twenty-two-year-old apprentice healer, thought her biggest challenge was perfecting her poultice recipes. One moment, she was cataloging rare herbs in the monastery's quiet library; the next, a disorienting haze cleared to reveal a gnarled hand clutching a staff, her reflection staring back as the wizened, seventy-year-old Lady Elara, matriarch of the impoverished Vance barony. Overnight, she inherited a crumbling keep, three grown sons more concerned with their rivalries than their duties, two sharp-tongued daughters-in-law, and a brood of boisterous grandchildren who eyed her with suspicion. The once-proud Vance lands, ravaged by generations of neglect and recent border skirmishes, were little more than dust and debts. Lady Elara, still reeling from the impossible leap of decades, must now navigate treacherous court politics, revive her family's failing resources, and forge an unlikely legacy from a lifetime she never lived, all while concealing the young woman's mind trapped within the old dame's body. The kingdom's future, and her family's survival, now rests on her unexpectedly ancient shoulders.
