A Hollow Vow in the Iron Rain
By @john1208
I should have died in the smog-choked gutters of Vorrun when my life-saving pneumatic-graft research was stolen. Instead, I clawed my way to the top of the industrial underworld, fueled by one prickly, unyielding desire: to utterly dismantle Nishea, the arrogant syndicate heiress who took it. The opening was perfect. After a breathless rooftop chase through the acid rain to intercept her rogue courier, I positioned myself as her savior. For three years, I swallowed my pride and became her indispensable business partner, weaving a bittersweet, unspoken romance between us. I made her rely on me, crave me, and love me. Then, I sprang the trap. I drained her legacy, usurped her trade routes, and abandoned her at the grand cathedral altar. But as I stood over the ruins of her life, my hollow victory shattered. I discovered the true thief was a desperate physician who stole my work to cure a slum of children poisoned by my own early factories, and Nishea took the blame to protect them. Now she has nothing, yet she smiles with a warmth she never showed me. I would willingly liquidate my entire fortune just to earn that smile - but how can I win back a woman whose heart I’ve already ground to dust?
