Shadows of the Painted General
By @john1208
The story opens in the freezing mud of Kuyao Village, where the newly transmigrated and paralyzed General Mo Jiyue strikes a desperate deal with the Emperor's most feared Inquisitor, Duan Wujiu: her military intelligence in exchange for a month of grain. Once a cynical Hollywood special-effects makeup artist, Jiyue uses her modern mastery of color theory, liquid latex substitutes, and anatomical painting to orchestrate a massive deception. By painting horrific, highly contagious plague symptoms onto her starving villagers, she forces corrupt regional governors to quarantine the area and abandon their hoarded medical rations at the borders.
Told in alternating third-person perspectives, the narrative shifts between Jiyue's cold, calculating survival in the village and Wujiu's hunt for a shapeshifting syndicate bleeding the capital's treasury dry. The melancholic tension builds as Wujiu falls for the brilliant, broken woman in the wheelchair, unaware that the two plot lines are one and the same: the 'shapeshifting syndicate' he hunts is simply Jiyue's disguised scouts smuggling the stolen treasury gold to buy the very grain he is delivering. What will the Inquisitor do when he uncovers the painted lies?
