Smokescreen Vows
By @john1208
Panya's beloved great-aunt uses her dying breath to demand one final, impossible favor: Panya must marry the basement tenant. With the Kravak Republic's new edict deporting all unmarried youth to the brutal Sarnian Steppes for forced labor, a marriage certificate is their only shield. Told through Panya's close third-person perspective, she plays the bubbly, empty-headed newlywed flawlessly, a cheerful facade masking her sharp mind and secret life as a resistance courier. Her new husband, Ignat, plays the exhausted, disgraced scholar. Neither expects the sheer, high-octane chaos of living in Block 44. Their nosy neighbors are heavily armed informants, turning every domestic chore into a battlefield. Through dodging midnight raids, sabotaging local spies, and booby-trapping their own hallway, their fake arrangement shifts into fierce mutual respect and undeniable warmth. Panya realizes she never wants this marriage to end. But when her frantic search for a missing rebel manifesto collides with the forbidden cipher that ruined Ignat's academic career, they discover a terrifying truth: their separate missions are the exact same conspiracy. Will their hard-won love survive the crossfire, or will the state's deadliest secret tear them apart?
