Chapter 1: The Golden Cage of Glory

12.7M words

Sweat dripped from Daniel’s chin, pattering onto the pristine locker room floor. Taping his wrists was a ritual, a silent meditation before the chaos of the court. Every wrap of the white cotton was tight, binding his muscles, preparing him to play the hero of the sports world. "You're going to pull a muscle if you wrap them any tighter," Artemis warned, leaning against the cold doorframe. Crossing her arms, she watched him with sharp, analytical eyes that didn't miss the tension in his broad shoulders. She knew him better than almost anyone, having shared the weight of secrets that would destroy them both if they ever leaked. Wally sat on a training table nearby, already working his way through a massive sleeve of protein bars. Fast-twitch muscle fibers demanded constant fuel, and his jaw moved at superhuman speeds as he swallowed another bite. "Let the big guy focus," Jade said, lounging on a nearby leather bench with a lazy, dangerous grin. Twirling a jade-handled dagger between her fingers, she caught the light off the polished steel with effortless precision. She was the deadly Cheshire to the underworld, but here, she was just family, lounging in her brother's sanctuary. Will leaned against the exit door, his arms folded over his chest, his eyes fixed on the array of security monitors. His eyes kept darting between the camera feeds of the arena and the hallway outside their private suite. "Security is quiet, almost too quiet," Will muttered, adjusting the brim of his baseball cap to shadow his face. Daniel stopped wrapping his left wrist, his jaw tightening as a hard knot formed along his cheekbone. Letting his hands fall, he looked at his friends, his gaze lingering on each of them with an intense, quiet protectiveness. Protecting them was the only thing that kept him grounded in a world that constantly tried to grind them into dust. Years ago, they had made an unspoken pact to shield one another from the endless war between heroes and villains. Now, he was the new Sportsmaster, wielding peak physical conditioning and tactical genius to keep the Light at bay. "I won't let anything touch you," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register that commanded absolute silence. Artemis walked over, her expression softening as she placed a hand on his massive, tape-wrapped shoulder. Gently, she squeezed, offering the kind of quiet support that only a fellow survivor of Lawrence Crock's legacy could give. "We know, Dan," she whispered, her voice steady. "But you can't carry the weight of the entire world on your shoulders." Standing up, Wally offered a quick salute, swallowing the last of his protein bar before tossing the wrapper into the bin. "Go show them why you're the highest-paid athlete on the planet, big guy," Wally grinned, his speedster energy vibrating. Jade slipped her dagger back into her boot, rising with a feline grace that masked the lethal predator underneath. Leaving the room together, they headed toward the private viewing box, leaving Daniel alone with his thoughts. --- Screams of forty thousand spectators shook the massive concrete foundations of the metropolitan arena. Blinding spotlights washed over the hardwood floor, reflecting off the polished surface like a sea of liquid gold. Adrenaline surged through Daniel's veins as he bounced the heavy basketball, his eyes locked onto the opposing point guard. Five seconds remained on the shot clock, the championship title hanging on this final, desperate possession. Opposing defenders swarmed him, their sweat-slicked bodies forming a physical wall to cut off his driving lanes. He anticipated their strategy, his tactical mind cataloging their movements and defensive rotations in milliseconds. Suddenly, the defender lunged, attempting to poke the ball loose or force a bad pass to the corner. Intercepting the ball mid-flight with a vicious cross-over, Daniel drove forward, a freight train in designer sneakers. Wood squeaked under his sneakers as he planted his foot, exploding upward with a vertical leap that defied gravity. Soaring high above the rim, he met the ball with both hands and slammed it through the hoop with devastating force. Thunderous cheers exploded from the crowd as the backboard glass shattered, raining tiny, harmless shards onto the court. Red lights flashed around the backboard, signaling the final buzzer and the crowning of a new champion. Confetti fell from the high rafters, a glittering storm of gold and silver paper that drifted over the celebrating players. Teammates piled onto Daniel, screaming in triumph, lifting him onto their shoulders as the arena erupted in pure chaos. Smiling for the cameras, he raised his arms, playing the role of the golden superstar perfectly for the media. Yet, his eyes never stopped moving, his gaze sweeping past the flashing cameras and the roaring crowds. Searching the luxury suites, his eyes instinctively drifted toward the private boxes overlooking the court. High above the court, near the ultra-exclusive VIP lounge, a single figure stood completely motionless. Standing near the glass, the man wore a tailored grey suit, his posture rigid and completely detached from the celebration. Daniel’s heart plummeted, a sudden ice-cold dread replacing the hot adrenaline of his athletic victory. Clutched in the man's gloved hand was a thick manila folder, held up deliberately against the glass. Zooming in with his cybernetic contact lenses, Daniel focused on the document, his vision sharpening the details. Bold letters spelled out a name that made his breath catch in his throat: ARTEMIS CROCK. Cold panic replaced his triumph as he realized the document was a highly classified profile from his own private archives. This shouldn't be possible; his security protocols were state-of-the-art, designed to keep their lives completely hidden. Security was his absolute obsession, the digital fortress he built to keep the Light away from his chosen family. Looking directly down at him, the stranger in the grey suit offered a slow, mocking nod of acknowledgment. Turning slowly, the operative walked back into the shadows of the VIP corridor, disappearing from view. --- Pushing past his celebrating teammates, Daniel ignored the reporters trying to thrust microphones into his face. Shoving open the heavy double doors of the player tunnel, he tore off his jersey and grabbed a towel. He ran down the concrete corridors, bypassing the main locker room entirely as he hunted his target. Navigating the service stairs with silent, rapid steps, he climbed toward the luxury suite levels. Silence hung heavy in the back hallway, a stark contrast to the muffled roar of the stadium still vibrating through the walls. Footsteps echoed in the distance, the sharp, rhythmic clicking of leather dress shoes on the polished concrete. Waiting in the dark corner of the service junction, Daniel coiled his muscles, preparing to strike. As the man in the grey suit rounded the corner, Daniel exploded from the shadows like a striking viper. Slamming him against the bricks, Daniel’s massive hand clamped around the man's throat, lifting him off his feet. "Who gave you those files?" Daniel growled, his voice a low, guttural rasp that promised immediate violence. His grip was iron, cutting off the operative's air supply as the man's legs kicked uselessly in the air. Manila paper fell to the floor, the secret files of Artemis scattering across the dusty concrete. Gasping for air, the operative grinned, showing teeth already stained with dark, metallic blood from the impact. His eyes held no fear, only a twisted, fanatic amusement that chilled Daniel to his very core. "You think you can hide them?" the man wheezed, his voice raspy and broken as he struggled against the chokehold. Pressing the combat knife against the man's temple, Daniel applied just enough pressure to draw a thin line of red. "I don't play games, and I don't give second chances," Daniel warned, his eyes burning with paranoid fury. Blood dripped down the side of the operative's face, but his mocking smile never wavered for a second. Slowly, Daniel loosened his grip slightly, allowing the man enough breath to speak but keeping him pinned. Coughing up phlegm, the operative laughed, a wet, rattling sound that echoed off the cold brick walls. "Nothing escapes the Light, Sportsmaster," he muttered, using the underworld name Daniel tried so hard to keep separate. Rage took control, and Daniel slammed the man's head back against the brick wall, cracking the plaster. Smashing the man's face with a brutal forearm strike, he demanded answers with a desperation he couldn't hide. "Tell me how you bypassed my security!" Daniel roared, his composure shattering under the weight of his fear for his family. A sickening realization washed over Daniel as he stared into those dead, unblinking eyes. The operative smiles through his broken teeth, whispering, 'The Light doesn't just watch your family, Sportsmaster—we own the court you play on,' before swallowing a lethal nerve agent.
