Chapter 66: A King's Sacrifice

1.4k words

A heavy silence descended, thick and suffocating. Valerius, his face etched with disbelief, stared at Lorghar as if he’d sprouted horns. Around them, the Blight Colossus pulsed with malevolent energy, its colossal form a constant, terrifying reminder of the world’s peril. Kaelen, however, met Lorghar’s gaze with an unnerving calm. Her eyes, ancient and knowing, held no surprise, only a profound understanding. The Collective Elders, a circle of weathered faces, nodded in solemn agreement. “Finally,” Kaelen murmured, her voice a low thrum against the chaos. “You speak the truth of it, Lorghar. The Earth remembers its children, even those who forgot it.” Valerius’s jaw tightened. “What madness is this? Earth’s will? The Blight is a plague, a curse from the void!” “A purge, as Lorghar correctly divined,” an Elder with eyes like polished obsidian countered, stepping forward. “Your ancestors, Valerius, twisted the truth to maintain their power. They severed the bond, built their empires upon the Earth’s suffering, and called its cries ‘darkness’.” Shock rippled through Valerius’s legion. Whispers erupted, quickly silenced by the Elder’s stern glare. “Centuries of exploitation,” Kaelen continued, her voice growing stronger, “have pushed our world to the brink. The Blight is not an invading force, but an immune response. A desperate fever, attempting to burn away the infection that is us.” Lorghar felt a strange clarity. The relief from his confession still resonated, a lightness in his chest he hadn’t known existed. Yet, the weight of this new, terrifying truth settled upon him. He was connected to this fever. His omnipotence, a fragment of Earth’s desperate scream. “So, what then?” Lorghar demanded, his voice raw. “Do we simply… die? Let the planet ‘purge’ us all?” Kaelen shook her head. “Not if there’s another way. A path to healing, not just for the Earth, but for us. To reforge the bond, to awaken its True Heart.” She gestured towards the colossal Blight entity, towering over the battlefield. The ground beneath them began to tremble, a deep, resonant hum vibrating through Lorghar’s bones. “The Blight,” Kaelen explained, “is a chaotic manifestation of the Earth’s pain. It consumes, it corrupts, but it also seeks balance. Its very existence is a plea.” Another Elder, a woman with braided white hair and hands gnarled like ancient roots, stepped forward. “There is an ancient ritual. One spoken of only in whispers, preserved by our forebears who still remembered the true ways before the Sundering. It is a ritual to commune with the Earth’s True Heart – the primordial source of its life, its energy, its very being.” Valerius scoffed. “A ritual? Against that?” He gestured wildly at the Blight Colossus. “Your ‘ancient ways’ brought us to this brink!” “Your ignorance brought us to this brink, Valerius,” Kaelen snapped, her calm shattering for a moment. Her gaze returned to Lorghar, serious and unwavering. “This ritual is not for a priest, nor a king. It requires a conduit. Someone capable of feeling the Earth’s echoes, someone whose very essence is interwoven with its awakening will.” Lorghar’s breath hitched. He knew. He understood before she even spoke the words. “You, Lorghar,” Kaelen stated, her voice soft but absolute. “You are that conduit. Your omnipotence is not just a power, it is the Earth reaching through you, trying to heal itself.” A chilling dread permeated Lorghar’s core. He felt a tremor, not just in the ground, but deep within his own being. A conduit. A vessel. He had fought his entire life to be more than a discarded piece of trash, to be an individual, a king, a force of will. Now, he was being asked to surrender it all. “What does that mean?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper. “To be a conduit?” “It means you will channel its raw, untamed essence,” the Elder with obsidian eyes clarified. “You will become the bridge between the Earth’s True Heart and our wounded world. Its lifeblood will flow through you, its ancient power will course through your veins.” “It means,” Kaelen added, her gaze softening slightly, “that you risk the erasure of ‘Lorghar.’ Your individual will, your memories, your very self, could be overwhelmed. You would become a part of something infinitely vast, infinitely ancient, losing yourself in its embrace. You would cease to be Lorghar, and become merely the Earth’s voice.” His heart hammered against his ribs. The thought was terrifying. Losing himself. Everything he had fought for, everything he had suffered to become, would simply… vanish. The boy who was trash, the king who forged his own throne, the man who wielded omnipotence – all gone, dissolved into a cosmic consciousness. Self-preservation screamed at him. *No. You cannot. You will be nothing.* But then he looked around. At Valerius’s horrified face, at the fear in his legion’s eyes, at the looming Blight Colossus that threatened to swallow them all. He remembered the desperate faces of the people in the alleys, the children he had once promised to protect. He remembered the feeling of that shared purpose from moments ago, the strange, fragile connection. Responsibility. A word that had always been a tool, a means to an end. Now, it felt like a heavy cloak, wrapping around him, suffocating yet strangely warm. He had always taken, always seized. Now, he was being asked to give. To give everything. “What are the chances?” Lorghar asked, his throat dry. “Of… success? Of healing the planet?” “It is not guaranteed,” Kaelen admitted. “The Earth’s Heart has been dormant for too long, its pain too profound. The ritual could either heal the planet, restoring balance and life, or it could accelerate its destruction, releasing an uncontrollable surge of raw power that rips the world apart.” A stark choice. Annihilation or a chance at salvation, both hinged on him. On his sacrifice. “And if I refuse?” he asked, though the words felt hollow even as he spoke them. Kaelen’s expression hardened. “Then the Blight will run its course. It will consume everything, turning our world into a barren, silent husk. Your omnipotence, a fragment of the Earth’s will, would fade with it. You would simply be another victim.” No. He wouldn’t be another victim. Not after all this. Not after clawing his way out of the gutter. He wouldn’t let the world he had fought to conquer, the people he had sworn to rule, simply perish. Even if it meant losing himself in the process. The irony wasn’t lost on him. He had sought power to control his destiny, and now, ultimate power demanded he relinquish it. His gaze drifted to the distant city, a faint glow against the encroaching darkness. He saw the faces of those who called him king, those who feared him, those who loved him. And he saw the ‘Trash’ boy, shivering in the cold, desperate for a shred of warmth or recognition. This was his chance to truly be more than ‘Trash’. To be a king, not just in name or might, but in sacrifice. “I’ll do it,” Lorghar declared, his voice firm, echoing with a resolve he hadn’t known he possessed. The words felt like a brand, searing into his very soul. He would become a vessel. He would risk erasure. He would make the choice for responsibility. Kaelen’s eyes gleamed with a mix of relief and sorrow. “The ritual will begin immediately. The Blight Colossus is a direct manifestation of the Earth’s uncontrolled pain. It is both the symptom and, ironically, a part of the cure, for it holds the key to re-entering the Earth’s True Heart.” The Collective Elders began to move, their movements swift and purposeful, forming a new circle around Lorghar. They chanted in a language he didn't understand, a guttural, ancient tongue that vibrated through the air, stirring dormant energies. The ground pulsed rhythmically now, a heartbeat beneath the world. Kaelen knelt before him, her hands outstretched. In her palm lay an object that pulsed with a dull, malevolent light. It was a shard, jagged and dark, shimmering with the raw energy of the Blight itself. It looked like a piece of the Colossus, condensed, refined. As the ritual preparations begin, Kaelen places an ancient, pulsating shard of pure Blight-crystal into Lorghar's hand, instructing: “This is not just Blight, but condensed Earth-grief. You must integrate it. If you fail, it will consume your omnipotence and your very soul.”
