Chapter 1: Crimson Moon's Embrace
923 words
Sharp agony lanced through Aman’s bones. Heat pulsed beneath his skin, a burning river of jinn blood awakening. Above, the moon, usually a serene silver disc, began to bleed. A crimson shadow crept across its face, the lunar eclipse drawing near. Gritting his teeth, Aman slammed his fist against the ancient banyan tree. Bark splintered under the unexpected force. His knuckles throbbed, a welcome distraction from the inferno inside. Every muscle strained, fighting the inevitable. Not this time. He swore it. Fear, cold and sharp, clawed at his throat. He could already feel the familiar shift, the grotesque twist of his human form. Panic threatened to consume him. Distant laughter drifted from the village below, innocent and carefree. Villagers gathered, oblivious, to witness the rare celestial event. Their joy was a cruel contrast to his torment. He had to get further away. A low growl rumbled in his chest, not his own. His spine arched involuntarily, a searing crack echoing through his body. Skin stretched taut, then ripped, the fabric of his shirt tearing. Dark, coarse hair erupted, thick as wire, across his forearms. Fingernails elongated, sharpening into obsidian claws. A guttural cry escaped his lips, choked with pain and horror. He stumbled, his knees buckling under the rapid transformation. Every fiber screamed. His jaw ached, teeth grinding, extending. Fangs. The monster was surfacing. Despair, a crushing weight, settled upon his soul. He was a monster. Always had been. Always would be. His family’s curse, a relentless predator, devoured him from within. No escape. No reprieve. He remembered his father, his uncle, their eyes clouding, their humanity fading. He remembered the fear in the eyes of those they had… changed. A memory, sharp as a blade, pierced him. His mother’s tear-streaked face, pleading with him to run. Run, she had whispered, before it takes you too. He hadn't run far enough. The air thickened, charged with unnatural energy. Lunar light, now a deep, unsettling crimson, bathed the forest. Shadowy tendrils writhed around him, an extension of the jinn's power. His vision blurred, then sharpened, colors shifting to an eerie spectrum. The world morphed, seen through predatory eyes. He smelled the villagers, their fear, their sweetness. An instinct, ancient and terrible, urged him towards them. His beast craved flesh, craved chaos. "No!" he roared, the sound distorted, inhuman. He fought the urge, digging his newly formed claws into the earth. Soil tore, roots snapped under his monstrous strength. Sweat, cold and clammy, plastered his furred skin. His heart hammered, a frantic drum against his ribs. The jinn within laughed, a resonant, taunting echo in his mind. *Give in, little human.* *It is your destiny.* *Embrace your true form.* "Never," he snarled, saliva dripping from elongated fangs. He pressed himself against the gnarled trunk, trying to contain the burgeoning horror. His limbs contorted, joints popping with sickening cracks. Height surged, shoulders broadening, muscles bulging. His clothes, what remained, ripped away, useless scraps. A tail, scaled and powerful, lashed behind him, whipping the undergrowth. Horns, sharp and dark, sprouted from his temples. His eyes, once a warm brown, now glowed a feral, molten gold. The transformation was almost complete. A wave of raw, untamed power surged through him. He felt the monstrous strength, the crushing hunger. His mind fractured, the human side shrinking, fighting a losing battle against the primal beast. Each breath was a struggle, a gulp of air that burned his inflamed throat. He could feel the village, a mere hundred yards down the slope, bustling with life. Children playing, adults chatting, the smell of woodsmoke and cooking food. It was a feast, a cruel, tempting offering for the monster he was becoming. He slammed his head back against the tree, a desperate, futile attempt to knock sense into the fading human part of his brain. The pain was immense, yet it barely registered through the roaring jinn blood. He was losing himself. Again. The despair choked him, a bitter, metallic taste in his mouth. What was the point? Every full moon, this same horrific ritual. Every time, he believed he could fight it, believed he could escape. And every time, he failed. He became the very thing he loathed, the monster that brought terror and destruction. His cursed lineage, a dark stain, continued its gruesome legacy through him. He was a vessel for the jinn, an instrument of fear. His guttural roars tore through the night, echoing his internal anguish. The jinn-beast stretched its new limbs, testing its immense power. Its muscles rippled, honed for destruction. A predatory glint sparked in its golden eyes. It turned, its massive form a terrifying silhouette against the crimson moon. The scent of the villagers, stronger now, called to it. Every fiber of the beast strained, yearning to unleash its fury. It took a step, then another, towards the unsuspecting lights of humanity. A snarl ripped through its throat, a promise of carnage. Its massive claws gouged paths into the earth with each step. The human part of Aman screamed, a silent plea lost in the beast's overwhelming might. He was trapped, a horrified spectator in his own body, watching the monster move. The beast's head snapped up, its nostrils flaring. It caught a new scent, an anomaly, something vibrant and unfamiliar. It paused, a low rumble vibrating in its chest, curiosity momentarily overriding the bloodlust. Then, from a clearing nearby, an unexpected burst of light exploded. A blinding flash of untamed magic erupted, pure and brilliant, pinning the roaring jinn-beast Aman with an unfamiliar, vibrant light.
