Cold water hit Mark directly in the face, shocking him out of a deep sleep.
Gasping, he sat straight up in bed, wiping the freezing moisture from his eyelashes.
"Mark, Mark! Wake up! Today is the day!"
Tessa stood over his mattress, holding an empty wooden bucket with a massive, mischievous grin plastered across her face. Her blonde hair bounced as she danced on her heels, clearly too energized for this early hour.
"What day?" Mark groaned, his voice thick with sleep. He rubbed his temples, feeling a dull ache behind his eyes.
"It's the beginning of the new year!" Tessa dropped the bucket onto the floor with a loud clatter. She grabbed his blanket, yanking it off him in one swift motion.
"So what?" Mark muttered, shivering as the chilly morning air hit his bare legs. He curled his toes, trying to pull his knees to his chest.
"Monster hunt!" Tessa squealed, grabbing his hands and pulling him upward. "We're going to Turtle Island to celebrate your fifteenth birthday! You can't sleep through this!"
"Do we really have to go?" Mark sighed, dragging his feet off the edge of the bed. "Is it really that important?"
"Yes! It is!"
Kenji's booming voice echoed from the bottom of the stairs, vibrating through the thin wooden floorboards. Heavy, confident footsteps followed, growing louder as he ascended.
"It is the most important day of your life, boy," Kenji said, leaning against the doorframe of the small attic bedroom. He adjusted the leather straps of his chest plate, his gruff face wearing a rare, serious expression. "Fifteen means you are finally a man in the eyes of the guild. Today, you hunt."
Mark looked up at his father. Kenji was a retired hunter, his body covered in faint white scars from years of fighting beasts in the wild. His presence filled the tiny room, radiating authority.
"I don't feel any different," Mark muttered, staring down at his pale, thin hands. He clenched them into fists, but there was no surge of power, no magical awakening. Just the same ordinary fingers.
"Feelings don't make a hunter," Kenji barked, though his eyes softened slightly. "Blood and iron do. Downstairs. Now. Your mother made breakfast, and the boat leaves in an hour."
Tessa stuck her tongue out at Mark before spinning around and skipping out of the room. Her footsteps clattered down the wooden steps like a drumroll.
---
Slowly, Mark dragged himself out of bed. He pulled on his worn leather boots, tying the laces with practiced ease. His fingers trembled slightly, a subtle vibration he couldn't quite control.
Fear was a quiet thing, whispering in the back of his mind. Turtle Island was notorious for its low-tier but highly aggressive mud-crawlers. He had never faced a real monster before.
Descending the creaky stairs, the smell of fried bacon and toasted bread hit him, making his stomach growl. The kitchen was small but warm, illuminated by the soft orange glow of the hearth.
His mother, Martha, smiled warmly as he entered. She immediately set a plate piled high with food in front of him, kissing the top of his damp head.
"Eat up, birthday boy," Martha murmured, her voice a soothing contrast to Kenji's booming tones. "You will need your strength today."
Mark took a seat next to Tessa, who was already stuffing her face with toast. Kenji sat across from them, meticulously cleaning a short, curved hunting knife with an oily cloth.
Silently, Mark began to eat. The food tasted like ash in his mouth, his throat tight with anxiety. He kept staring at the knife in Kenji's hand, watching the cold metal catch the firelight.
"Why Turtle Island?" Mark asked after swallowing a piece of bacon. "Isn't that where the higher-level guilds train their recruits? We're just independent gatherers."
Kenji stopped wiping the blade. He set the oil cloth down on the wooden table, his gaze locking onto Mark's eyes with an intensity that made the boy want to look away.
"Because Turtle Island holds a secret," Kenji whispered, his voice dropping to a gravelly register. "Every fifty years, the island's core shifts. It releases a unique essence. If a young man is present during the shift on his fifteenth birthday, his potential awakens."
"Awakens?" Mark leaned forward, his curiosity briefly overriding his dread. "Like the high-ranking hunters in the capital? The ones who can channel elemental energy?"
Tessa nodded vigorously, her mouth still half-full of bread. "Yes! Imagine if you get fire magic, Mark! You could burn down entire nests of crawlers with a single wave of your hand!"
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves," Kenji warned, though a small smirk tugged at the corner of his scarred mouth. "Even a basic physical enhancement would secure his future. He wouldn't have to spend his life scraping by in the outer districts."
Mark swallowed hard. The pressure felt like a physical weight pressing down on his shoulders. What if he went there, faced a monster, and nothing happened? What if he was just... ordinary?
"Time to go," Kenji announced, standing up and sheathing his knife. The metal clicked sharply against the leather scabbard. "Grab your gear. The tide won't wait for us."
---
Cool sea breeze whipped through Mark's hair as their small wooden sailboat sliced through the choppy gray waves. The mainland was shrinking behind them, its jagged cliffs disappearing into a low-hanging fog.
Ahead, Turtle Island loomed like a sleeping giant. It was a massive, dome-shaped mass of rock and dense green foliage, rising sharply from the dark ocean water.
Waves crashed violently against the jagged black reefs surrounding the island's perimeter. Kenji steered the boat with expert hands, navigating the narrow, treacherous channels with ease.
Tessa stood at the bow, holding onto the wooden railing and laughing as salty spray splashed over her face. She seemed completely fearless, a stark contrast to Mark, who was white-knuckling the side of the boat.
"Look!" Tessa pointed toward a narrow sandy beach nestled between two towering stone pillars. "There's the landing dock!"
Mark squinted through the mist. The dock was old, its wooden planks rotted and covered in green algae. It looked like it hadn't been used in years, which only added to the eerie atmosphere.
Kenji guided the boat alongside the dock, throwing a thick rope around a wooden post to secure it. He jumped out first, his boots landing with a heavy thud on the slippery wood.
"Stay close," Kenji commanded, throwing a small leather satchel to Mark. "The mud-crawlers usually nest near the shoreline. If we encounter one, I want you to draw your dagger. Do not run."
Mark caught the satchel, his fingers brushing against the cold hilt of the iron dagger strapped to his belt. He pulled the weapon slightly from its sheath, the blade dull and chipped.
"I'm ready," Mark lied, his voice cracking slightly. He climbed out of the boat, his knees shaking as his boots touched the unstable dock.
Tessa leaped down beside him, completely unfazed. She carried a lightweight bow slung across her back, her fingers tapping against her quiver of arrows.
Together, they moved off the dock and onto the wet sand of the beach. The air on the island was thick and humid, smelling of rotting vegetation and salt.
Silence hung heavy over the jungle bordering the beach. No birds sang. No insects buzzed. It was an unnatural quiet that made the hairs on the back of Mark's neck stand up.
"Something is wrong," Kenji muttered, his hand dropping to the hilt of his sword. He stopped walking, his eyes scanning the tree line with sharp intensity.
"What do you mean, Dad?" Tessa asked, her playful demeanor instantly vanishing. She reached back, her fingers wrapping around the grip of her bow.
"This place should be crawling with life," Kenji whispered, his body tense as a coiled spring. "Even the mud-crawlers make noise. It's too quiet. Much too quiet."
Suddenly, a metallic smell filled the air. It wasn't the smell of salt or rot, but the sharp, copper scent of fresh blood.
Mark sniffed the air, his stomach churning. "Do you smell that?"
Kenji didn't answer. He took a slow step forward, his eyes fixed on a massive, dark shape lying near the edge of the jungle.
Approaching the shape, Mark's breath caught in his throat. It was a mud-crawler, but it was massive—easily the size of a carriage. Its thick, armored shell was cracked wide open, oozing black, viscous blood onto the sand.
"What could have done this?" Tessa whispered, her eyes wide with terror. "Their shells are supposed to be impervious to normal weapons."
Kenji knelt beside the carcass, dipping his gloved finger into the black blood. He rubbed it between his fingers, his expression darkening.
"This wasn't done by a weapon," Kenji said, his voice barely audible over the sound of the crashing waves. "This was done by teeth. Massive, jagged teeth."
Panic flared in Mark's chest. He took a step backward, his boots sinking into the wet sand. "Dad, maybe we should go back. The boat is right there. We can come back another day."
"We can't," Kenji said, standing up. "The tide has already shifted. The currents around the reefs are too strong to navigate in the dark. We have to find shelter."
---
A low, vibrating growl rumbled from deep within the jungle, shaking the leaves on the nearby trees. The sound was so deep it vibrated in Mark's chest, making his teeth rattle.
"Run!" Kenji yelled, drawing his sword with a sharp hiss of metal. "To the cave up the ridge! Now!"
Tessa didn't hesitate. She turned and bolted up the rocky path leading toward the center of the island. Mark followed close behind, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
Behind them, the jungle canopy exploded. Giant trees snapped like toothpicks as a massive creature burst onto the beach.
Mark risked a glance over his shoulder and immediately regretted it.
Towering over the beach was a nightmare of scales and claws. It had the body of a colossal bipedal lizard, but its head was split into three distinct jaws, dripping with acidic saliva that hissed as it hit the sand. Its eyes glowed with a sickening, crimson light.
"A dread-stalker," Kenji breathed, his face draining of all color. "What is a high-tier calamity doing on a starter island?"
Roaring violently, the beast unleashed a deafening sound that shattered the silence of the island and sent a shockwave of hot air rushing over them.
Kenji stood his ground, raising his sword. "Keep running! Mark, protect your sister!"
"Dad, no!" Mark screamed, but his legs kept moving, driven by pure survival instinct.
Heavy footsteps thundered behind them as the dread-stalker charged. Kenji lunged forward, his blade flashing in the dim light as he struck at the beast's leg.
Metal clashed against scales with a shower of sparks, but the blade barely left a scratch. With a casual flick of its massive tail, the creature sent Kenji flying through the air. He crashed hard into a stone pillar, his sword spinning away into the surf.
"Dad!" Tessa screamed, stopping dead in her tracks. She raised her bow, her fingers trembling as she notched an arrow.
"Tessa, don't!" Mark lunged forward, grabbing her arm and dragging her behind a large boulder just as the beast snapped its jaws where she had been standing a second ago.
Acidic saliva splashed against the boulder, sizzling and eating away at the solid stone.
"We have to save him," Tessa sobbed, her eyes wide with terror as she struggled against Mark's grip. "He's not moving!"
Mark peered around the edge of the boulder. Kenji lay motionless against the stone pillar, a dark pool of blood forming beneath his head. The dread-stalker was slowly turning its massive heads toward him, smelling the fresh blood.
Adrenaline surged through Mark's veins, hot and volatile. His fear vanished, replaced by a desperate, burning rage.
"Stay here," Mark whispered, his voice incredibly calm.
"Mark, what are you doing?" Tessa cried, reaching for him, but he was already moving.
Sprinting out from behind the boulder, Mark drew his dull iron dagger. "Hey! Over here, you giant lizard!" he screamed at the top of his lungs.
All three of the creature's heads snapped toward him, their crimson eyes locking onto his small, fragile frame.
Mark stood his ground on the wet sand, his heart pounding in his ears like a war drum. He gripped the dagger with both hands, bracing himself for the impact.
Suddenly, a strange sensation erupted in his chest. It felt like a spark of pure, white-hot lightning, spreading rapidly through his veins.
Glowing blue runes began to burn into the skin of his forearms, shining brightly through his wet sleeves.
"What is this?" Mark whispered, staring down at his arms as the power surged, threatening to tear his body apart.
Lashing out, the dread-stalker lunged, its three jaws wide open, ready to swallow him whole.
Mark raised his glowing hands, a blinding light erupting from his palms as he braced for the end.
But instead of pain, a deep, resonant voice echoed inside his mind, cold and ancient.
"System initialization complete," the voice whispered. "Protocol: Vengeance activated."
A massive shockwave of pure dark energy erupted from Mark's body, slamming into the dread-stalker and sending the colossal beast skidding backward across the sand.
Mark gasped, the sudden drain of energy dropping him to his knees as the blue runes on his arms flared with a terrifying, violent crimson light.
Recovering instantly, the beast shook its massive heads as its glowing red eyes locked onto Mark with newfound fury.
"Mark!" Tessa's terrified scream cut through the roaring wind as the ground beneath them began to violently shake.
From the center of the island, a massive column of black light shot straight up into the sky, tearing the clouds apart and plunging the entire ocean into pitch-black darkness.
This was not an awakening. This was the beginning of the end.
