Chapter 8 of 10

Blood and Stitches

The sterile white light of the Zantino Estate medical bay felt less like a sanctuary and more like a poorly lit operating theatre. Tazia clicked the surgical light into position, the beam cutting a harsh line across Mateo’s bicep. His expensive suit jacket lay discarded, a crimson stain blooming across the shoulder. The grazing shot had torn an ugly furrow along his skin, ragged but shallow. “Hold still,” she murmured, her voice flat. She dabbed at the wound with an antiseptic wipe. The smell of iodine was sharp, clinical. She’d spent enough time patching up herself and Pietro after various garage mishaps to recognize a clean entry point. The fact it was a sniper round changed nothing about the wound's basic mechanics. Mateo didn’t flinch. His gaze, usually a predatory dark, was muted, fixed on the scorched fragment of bomb casing she’d placed on a nearby stainless-steel trolley. The three-pointed crown, the words *SENTINEL TRIBUNAL – HIGH SYNDICATE*. He’d barely spared it a glance when she showed it to him, his focus instantly shifting to her safety. “The arbiters are less a governing board and more a medieval inquisition,” Mateo said, his voice a low thrum that vibrated through the quiet room. “They enforce the Code. Absolute loyalty, blood oaths, debts of honor paid in… specific ways.” He paused, then added, “They’re why Silvio accelerated his timetable. He needs to present our heads on a platter before they can legitimize his claim to my territory.” “Legitimize?” Tazia snorted, threading a curved needle with black suture silk. “His claim is treason.” “To the board, it’s not,” Mateo explained, a tendon shifting in his throat. “It’s succession. He proves I’m weak, unable to protect my holdings, and the Zantino Syndicate passes to him. Unless…” He trailed off, his eyes finally meeting hers. “Unless a Donna of the Zantino line formally intercedes. It’s an archaic rule. Rarely invoked. The Donna must be proven. Must hold absolute sway. Must be… undeniable.” Tazia’s hand paused, the needle hovering over his skin. “A Donna can veto the ruling board?” The question hung sharp between them. This wasn’t just about survival anymore. This was about power, about challenging an entire institution. “Only a true one,” Mateo confirmed, his gaze intense, searching. “The one who holds the Zantino heart. The one who… is the heart.” Tazia pushed the thought away, focusing on the immediate task. “Right. Heart-holding can wait. Suture time.” She pressed the needle through his skin, a precise, practiced movement. Mateo barely registered it, his focus still on her. She worked quickly, her movements economical, tying off the stitches with a surgeon’s knot. As she finished, sealing the small, neat line, a security detail entered the medical bay, announcing, “The perimeter is holding, Boss. But a heavy transport just landed at the secondary air strip. Unidentified. Multiple hostiles disembarking.” Mateo nodded, his expression hardening. The detached calm he’d held evaporated. He swung his legs off the examination table, ignoring the fresh wound. “Prep the East Wing for defensive operations. Alert the Kestrel Unit.” “Wait,” Tazia said, reaching for his arm. “You just got shot. You need to rest.” He shook his head. “No time.” His eyes, now sharp and cold, scanned the room, landing on a small, unadorned box on the nearby counter. “Tazia.” He opened it. Inside, nestled on black velvet, were two items: a pristine, dark-blue travel document bearing the insignia of the Republic of Vesperia, and a single, one-way ticket to Port Nocturne, departing in two hours. The name on both read 'Elena Cruz.' Tazia stared at it. Elena Cruz. A ghost. An escape. A way out. “Silvio is coming for us,” Mateo said, his voice softer than she’d ever heard it, laced with an agonizing honesty. “He’s bringing the arbiters. This is your chance. Take Pietro, take the new identity. You’ll be safe. I won’t force you to stay. Not in this life. Not with me.” He extended the box, a silent offer, an unconditional surrender of his deepest desire to keep her by his side. Silence pressed hard against the steel tables. Tazia looked from the paper booklet to Mateo’s face, then to the fresh stitches on his arm, the thread pulling tight against his skin. She looked at the fragment of bomb casing, at the three-pointed crown, marked by the old syndicate authority. This was it. The ultimate logistical problem. She intellectualized the entire decision in a fraction of a second. Survival. Pietro. The hypercar. All of it. And then, an unexpected surge, hot and violent, that had nothing to do with logic. Her gaze snapped to the forged booklet, then to the faint, metallic scent of Mateo’s blood on her fingers. “Take it,” he urged again, his expression unwavering, offering her freedom even as his world threatened to collapse. Tazia didn’t take the box. Instead, her hand shot out, not for the passport, but for the combat knife she’d seen tucked into Mateo’s waistband earlier. It was a brutal thing, black steel, razor-sharp, still faintly stained with the dark, metallic tang of the warehouse. She snatched it, the cross-hatched grip cold against her skin. Mateo pulled back sharply. “Tazia, no.” But she wasn’t looking at him. Her gaze was fixed on her own left palm. With a swift, decisive movement that made him suck in a sharp breath, she drew the blade across her skin. A thin, crimson line immediately welled up, a precise, agonizing slice that pulsed with a sudden, fierce pain. She lifted her bleeding hand, her eyes blazing, the pain sharpening her resolve, not diminishing it. “You said a Donna holds the Zantino heart? You said an oath must be sworn?” Her voice was raw, a furious whisper. “Then share your damn empire with me, Mateo Zantino. This isn’t a way out. This is a way in.” She reached for his bandaged arm, twisting her bleeding palm against his fresh wound, mixing their blood, a primal, searing covenant. Her gaze locked with his, defiance and a fierce, unyielding devotion burning in her eyes. The Zantino Syndicate was hers now too. Their combined blood sealed the archaic, unbreakable vow. Just as their mingled blood dripped onto the sterile white floor, a thunderous *BOOM* shook the entire estate. The titanium front gates, reinforced against a small army, exploded inward, shredded metal showering the drive as Silvio Ganza’s private army poured onto the grounds.
