Chapter 5: The Ice Prince

Cold air cut through the humid warmth of the stone corridor, carrying the sharp scent of pine and ozone. Cactus leaned his shoulder against the rough cave wall, his tail twitching lazily. He dragged a claw along the stone, listening to the muffled argument echoing from the training cavern ahead. Angered voices bounced off the damp rocks, one sharp and aristocratic, the other dripping with ocean-salty irritation. "He is a liability, Tsunami," the freezing voice hissed, sounding like a royal prick who had never been told no in his entire life. "He is a student, Winter," Tsunami barked back, her scales rattling with dangerous agitation. "And right now, he has more fight in him than half of your fancy IceWing guards." Listening to them fight about him was almost amusing, though Cactus kept his smirk hidden. He adjusted his stance, feeling the dry heat of his own body radiating against the damp stone. Winter sneered, his tone dripping with absolute disgust. "He is a hybrid of questionable origin, a street-fighting stray you brought in like a pet project." "Watch your mouth, ice boy," Tsunami warned, her tail slapping the stone floor with a crack like thunder. "I do not take orders from a prince without a throne." Cactus decided he had heard enough, stepping out of the shadows and sliding into the light of the main cavern. His golden-sand scales caught the torchlight, and his heavy gold earring jingled softly with the movement. Step by step, he closed the distance between them, his gaze locked onto the shimmering, pale blue dragon standing opposite Tsunami. Winter looked like a walking glacier, his scales so white they seemed to glow, lined with razor-sharp spikes that looked deadly to the touch. He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes narrowing into frozen slits as Cactus approached. Frost puffed from the prince's snout, instantly condensing into a small cloud of vapor in the warm air. Cactus stopped just a few feet away, feeling the temperature plunge dramatically, a stark contrast to his own sun-baked warmth. The air between them shimmered, a micro-climate of melting frost and rising steam. "Speak of the devil," Cactus murmured, his voice a low, gravelly drawl that carried his strange, modern accent. "You got something to say to my face, Your Highness?" Ice-blue eyes scanned him from head to talon, lingering on the jagged scars along Cactus's forearms and the modern, relaxed posture he held. Winter took a step closer, the sheer cold radiating from his body making Cactus's chest muscles tighten. The prince raised a pale, clawed hand, his movement agonizingly slow and deliberate. Serrated talons reached out, the tip of his index claw catching the edge of Cactus's heavy gold earring. Slowly, Winter traced the metal loop, dragging his sharp nail along the gold with a high-pitched, ringing vibration that echoed in Cactus's ears. "You wear trinkets," Winter sneered, his voice dropping to a freezing whisper that felt like a needle against Cactus's skin. Cactus did not flinch, leaning slightly into the freezing aura of the prince, his own eyes burning with quiet defiance. "It's heritage." Winter's claw flicked the gold hoop, letting it swing back and forth against Cactus's neck scales. "It's noise." Sarcasm dripped from Cactus's grin as he bared his teeth, showing off his unusually sharp fangs. "Then maybe you should cover your ears, princess." Snorting, Winter stepped back, his tail lashing behind him and sending small specks of frost flying across the stone floor. "You have no discipline, hybrid. You fight like a beast in the mud, relying on cheap tricks." "Cheap tricks get the job done," Cactus replied, his mind flashing to the street fights of his past life, the concrete, the blood, the raw survival. "But if you think you can do better, show me." Winter's chest swelled, his wings flaring open to reveal the stunning, pale blue webbing beneath. "A duel. Not for blood. For pride." Tsunami stepped between them, her blue face split into a wild, instigating grin. "Oh, I want to see this. No frostbreath, Winter. Pure physical sparring." "Agreed," Winter hissed, his eyes locked onto Cactus like a predator marking its prey. Sand kicked up under their talons as they moved to the center of the sparring ring, a circular depression in the stone floor covered in a thick layer of grit. Cactus circled to the left, his tail held low, his body crouched in a modern MMA-style stance rather than the traditional, stiff dragon guard. He kept his weight on the balls of his feet, ready to explode into motion at any second. Winter watched him with clinical precision, his posture perfect, representing centuries of royal martial training. Tail whipping through the air, Winter lunged first, his movements incredibly fast and deceptive for a dragon of his size. Sharp claws swiped at Cactus's throat, but Cactus dipped his head, letting the frigid talons whistle harmlessly through the air above him. Moving like liquid heat, Cactus ducked inside Winter's guard, driving a heavy elbow strike right into the soft tissue of the prince's ribs. The impact felt like hitting a block of solid ice, a dull ache radiating up Cactus's arm. Winter grunted, stumbling back a step before recovering instantly and launching a vicious spinning tail strike. Frigid spikes whipped toward Cactus's face, forcing him to throw himself backward onto the sand to avoid getting his eyes shredded. Rolling quickly, Cactus scrambled to his feet just as Winter brought a heavy front talon crashing down where his head had been a second ago. The stone beneath the sand cracked under the force of the blow. "Is that all you have?" Winter taunted, his breathing steady, though a thin line of sweat was starting to freeze on his brow. "Just warming up, ice cube," Cactus muttered, his heart hammering against his ribs as he evaluated his opponent. Winter was stronger, heavier, and had a longer reach, but he was rigid, relying on textbook forms and predictable patterns. Cactus feinted to the left, putting his entire body weight into the movement to make it look like a desperate lunging tackle. Winter took the bait, shifting his weight to counter the incoming grapple and throwing his forelegs wide to pin Cactus to the ground. Swift as a striking desert viper, Cactus changed direction mid-stride, dropping his shoulder and sliding directly under Winter's raised chest. Using his momentum, Cactus drove his hind legs upward, catching the prince right under his chin with a brutal, explosive kick. Winter's head snapped back, his teeth clicking together with a sickening crack as the force of the blow lifted his front feet off the ground. Before the prince could recover his balance, Cactus lunged onto his back, wrapping his strong forelegs around Winter's neck and locking his hind legs around the prince's waist. Winter thrashed wildly, roaring in anger as he tried to throw the hybrid off, but Cactus held on like a parasite, tightening the chokehold. Pressure applied to the carotid artery made Winter's movements grow sluggish, his vision likely swimming as the oxygen supply dwindled. Cactus leaned close to the prince's ear, his hot, desert-scented breath melting the frost on Winter's neck scales. "Yield, princess." Winter stiffened, his body trembling with a mixture of rage, exhaustion, and something far more complex that made his scales shudder. Silence fell over the cavern, broken only by the heavy, ragged breathing of both dragons locked in the intimate embrace of combat. Slowly, Winter's wings dropped, his tail stopping its frantic thrashing as he let out a low, defeated hiss. Cactus released his hold immediately, sliding off the prince's back and landing lightly on the sand, his own chest heaving. Dust settled around them, the heat of the struggle slowly dissipating into the cool air of the training grounds. Tsunami clapped her hands together, a loud, booming sound that echoed off the stone walls. "Excellent! Speed beats brute force every single time." Winter slowly rose to his feet, refusing to look at Tsunami, his posture rigid once more as he shook the sand from his pristine scales. He turned his head toward Cactus, his dark eyes burning with a dangerous, intense light that was completely devoid of his previous dismissal. Cactus stood his ground, a cocky smirk returning to his face, though his muscles still tensed for another attack. Winter did not speak, but the look he gave Cactus was not one of defeat; it was the look of a hunter who had finally found a challenge worthy of his claws, glaring at him like a predator marking its next obsession.
