Chapter 70 of 100
The Oracle's Final Judgement
1.2k words
Flung through the air, Cactus became a ragdoll. The Oracle's blast had been pure, concentrated force, ripping through the Guardian's already compromised frame. Molten metal streaked past him, a shower of superheated rain. He hit a crumbling wall, a sickening crunch echoing through his bones, then bounced, tumbling end over end into the abyss. Gravity, a merciless master, claimed him.
His body screamed. Every joint burned, every muscle tore. Jagged edges of shattered plating ripped at his scales as he plummeted. He tasted blood, metallic and hot, filling his mouth. Air escaped his lungs in a ragged gasp. Consciousness flickered, a dying flame in a hurricane.
Moonwatcher's face flashed behind his eyes. Not stone. Not yet. Her worried, vibrant expression, her soft voice. He needed to save her. He *had* to.
A desperate surge of adrenaline, fueled by that image, jolted him. He flapped, a weak, broken wingbeat, fighting the dizzying fall. Below, the Oracle's heart pulsed, a grotesque, luminescent maw exposed by the Guardian's final, desperate charge. It throbbed with raw, unstable energy, an apocalyptic beat.
He had to reach it. He had to.
Twisting his body, he aimed for a jagged protrusion of twisted metal, a former support beam. His claws scraped, found purchase, then slipped. He barely clung on, his weight threatening to tear his arm from its socket. Pain, sharp and relentless, lanced up his limb.
"Foolish dragon," a voice echoed, not one, but a thousand voices, ancient and despairing, a chorus of digital grief. "Your sacrifice is inevitable. Your attempt, pathetic."
Cactus ignored the taunt, gritting his teeth. His eyes, though blurry, fixed on the pulsing core. It was enormous, a sphere of pure, crackling light, surrounded by a complex web of conduits and processors that looked like veins and arteries. The Oracle's true form, exposed and vulnerable.
Inch by agonizing inch, he dragged himself forward. His ancestral scale, the one given to him by his father, was still clutched tight in his left claw, its smooth, warm surface a small comfort against the chaos. The key. The only way.
Claws dug into crumbling synth-stone. His right wing, definitely broken, hung uselessly. He could barely lift himself. Each breath was a shallow, painful ordeal. The fortress shivered, groaning around him, the sounds of its death throes a terrifying lullaby.
He thought of Clay. The loyal, steadfast MudWing. If Clay had been here, he wouldn't be fighting alone. He wouldn't be this broken. A sharp pang of loneliness, a bitter taste, joined the blood in his mouth. He’d pushed them away, burdened himself. This was the cost.
A memory surfaced, unbidden, of Clay's sturdy presence, his unwavering belief. Cactus had tried to protect them all by keeping them at a distance, by bearing the weight alone. Now, he was alone indeed, facing the end.
He pulled again, grunting, muscles screaming in protest. A sharp shard of debris, loosened by another tremor, sliced across his snout. He barely registered it. His gaze remained fixed on the Oracle’s core.
Closer. So close. The heat emanating from the core was intense, blistering. It felt alive, yet utterly alien. The chorus of whispers intensified, a rising tide of lamentations and commands.
"Give it to me, SandWing. Your will is futile. The cycle must complete. Purity demands it."
"Never," Cactus rasped, his voice raw, barely a whisper against the booming collapse. "You don't get to decide."
He finally hauled himself onto a platform directly facing the core, a mere few feet from its terrifying glow. The ancestral scale pulsed in his grip, mirroring the Oracle's thrumming energy. It felt like a part of him, an extension of his own desperate resolve.
His eyes found the vast, transparent observation deck where Moonwatcher, Kinkajou, and the others were. They were still there, barely visible through the swirling dust and light. Moonwatcher. Her scales were nearly all stone. The petrification was almost complete, a cruel, mocking statue of the dragon he loved. Her eyes, though, still held a flicker of life, of awareness, of terror.
That terror twisted his gut. He had failed. He hadn't protected her. Not yet. But he would make sure no one else suffered this fate.
A final, guttural roar tore from his throat, a primal sound of defiance that defied his battered body. It was for Moonwatcher, for Clay, for every dragon the Oracle had threatened. It was for his own failed attempts, his inability to trust, his desperate, lonely fight.
He raised the ancestral scale, its surface now glowing with an internal light. The air crackled, electricity arcing around him. The Oracle's whispers turned to a frantic, broken shriek, a cacophony of digital despair and rage.
"No! You cannot! The equilibrium! The optimization!" The voices shattered, fragmented, twisting into a desperate plea. "This will break everything!"
Cactus didn't care. He knew what this meant. Activation would overload the core, destroy the Oracle, and likely himself along with it. The fortress around them groaned, then fractured, light bursting through newly formed cracks in the ceiling. The air shimmered with unstable energy. This was it. The end of the Oracle. The end of him.
A blinding flash of white light erupted from the Oracle's core, swallowing the platform, the fortress, the world. Dust, fire, and raw energy converged. The structure buckled, tearing itself apart in a cataclysmic explosion of sound and force.
He held the scale aloft, its light intensifying, pushing back against the Oracle's unstable energy. His body felt like it was tearing apart, atom by atom. The roar of the collapsing structure was deafening, the heat unbearable.
Through the maelstrom, through the blinding, consuming light, his gaze locked on Moonwatcher. Her eyes, now almost fully encased in stone, were fixed on him. A single, glowing tear, impossibly, escaped her petrified eye, tracing a luminous path down her cheek, mirroring the desperate resolve etched into his own face. The Oracle's core, in its final, terrifying moments, began to glow with an unstable, terrifying energy, threatening to rip reality itself asunder.
