Chapter 6 of 10

The Puppet Master's Folly

1.3k words

The stench of ozone and stale blood clung to the air in the semi-final arena. Jue stood on the basalt floor, the air thick with the hushed anticipation of a thousand masked faces. This segment of the arena was carved from the colossal beast's molar, its jagged, calcified peaks casting long, distorted shadows that danced with the flickering ghost-lights. Above him, the petrified ribs arched like the skeletal fingers of a forgotten god, weeping a perpetual, greasy drizzle that slicked the stone. He could feel the familiar, sickening thrum beneath his feet, a low, resonant hum that Beichen had identified as the entity’s pulse. Now, it felt like a countdown. His opponent, Jin Wei, the sect's favored son, stood opposite him. Jin Wei was a pillar of their pride, his silver robes embroidered with the churning waves of the ancient creature, his gaze alight with arrogant power. “Duanmu Jue,” Jin Wei’s voice boomed, amplified by some subtle cultivation art, “You have crawled across a streak of undeserved fortune. Your luck ends here. The True Heir of the Leviathan will purge your uncleanliness.” Jue merely observed, his own face a mask of detached calm. He noted the subtle shift in the air around Jin Wei, the faint shimmer that indicated a pre-activated formation. The young master wasn't relying solely on physical prowess. Good. That would make this easier. “Uncleanliness?” Jue’s voice was a low murmur, yet it cut through the arena’s silence. “Perhaps. But a parasite learns to wield its host.” Jin Wei’s face contorted, his pride stung. “Silence, cripple! Witness the might of the Grand Convergence Array!” He threw his arms wide, and the elaborate engravings on the dark flagstones beneath him flared with a malevolent vermilion glow. Thin, pale filaments, shimmering with an oppressive vital hunger, snaked out from the ground, tracking straight toward Jue. These were the Scarlet Veil Weave, designed to siphon the very life force from a target, leaving them a desiccated husk. Elder Mo, perched on a throne of polished bone overlooking the arena, offered a faint, approving nod. Other elders, their hollow eyes fixed, watched with unnerving stillness. [“Jue! This array feeds on vital essence!”] Beichen’s urgent mental cry echoed in his mind. [“It will devour your cultivation roots!”] “Let it,” Jue thought back, a chilling resolve solidifying in his core. He had been preparing for this. The Scarlet Veil Weave was a conduit, a network. And Jue was a master of corruption. He did not resist. As the ghostly cords wrapped around his limbs, around his chest, Jue closed his eyes for a moment, focusing inward. The demonic curse, a roiling tempest of black miasma within his meridians, flared in response to the siphon. Instead of fighting it, Jue guided it. He pushed the corrosive taint, the pure corruption of his curse, into the invading cords. It was a controlled suicide, a poison injected into the enemy's own bloodstream. The vermilion glow of the array flickered. A strange, sickly purple began to bloom at the points where the cords connected to Jue. Jin Wei’s triumphant smile faltered. His hands, still raised to control the array, began to tremble. The purple spread, crawling along the pale filaments, back towards the array’s origin. “What… what is this?” Jin Wei choked, his voice suddenly shrill with panic. The Scarlet Veil Weave, instead of drawing Jue’s force, was now funneling his curse directly into Jin Wei’s cultivation base. Jin Wei's veins bulged, turning a grotesque black beneath his skin. His eyes rolled back, and a scream tore from his throat, not of rage, but of pure, unadulterated agony. The array’s blood-hued light pulsed erratically, then began to overload. Sparks, black and corrosive, shot from the basalt flagstones, searing the air. Jin Wei thrashed, his elegant robes tearing as he writhed. “Stop it! Stop it! I yield! Please, Elder Mo, make him stop!” he shrieked, his voice dissolving into desperate pleas, tears and snot streaking his once-pristine face. The masked crowd murmured, a violent stir rippling through them. They had never seen their golden boy brought to such a state. Elder Mo’s face, usually impassive, twitched with cold fury. “Duanmu Jue!” Elder Mo’s voice was a crack of thunder. A fist, wreathed in dark force, shot from his throne, aimed straight at Jue’s head. This was no mere disciplinary strike; it was meant to shatter him. Before the strike could land, a blur of jade-green streaked across the arena. Su Wanyi, her movements swift as a startled heron, materialized between Jue and Elder Mo’s attack. A shimmering barrier of moonlight-pale barrier erupted from her, deflecting the Elder’s blow with a deafening crack. The force still sent a tremor through her, but she stood firm. The crowd gasped. Zhong Li, her betrothed, who had been watching from a prominent seat, shot to his feet, his face a mask of outraged disbelief. “Wanyi! What is the meaning of this insolence?!” Su Wanyi turned, her gaze, usually melancholic and downcast, now blazing with a fierce, quiet defiance. She looked not at Zhong Li, but directly at Elder Mo and the assembled sect elders. “This bond,” she declared, her voice clear and resonant, echoing through the stunned arena, “is a cage of suffering. I sever it. I sever all ties to the Iron Cauldron Sect and its abusive heir. And to any who would condemn the innocent for their twisted rituals.” Her eyes then met Jue’s for a fleeting moment, a silent message of desperate solidarity. Jue’s analytical mind processed the sheer magnitude of her action: public defiance, severing powerful political ties, aligning herself with a curse-ridden pariah. It was an act of self-immolation, all for him. The cold logic of his vengeance warred with a sudden, searing surge of something else, something raw and protective. He turned back to Jin Wei, who lay gasping, barely conscious, the glowing cords still connected, though now weakened. Jue didn’t need to finish Jin Wei off with the array. He had a different purpose. He knelt beside the twitching form of the fallen noble. The elders watched, frozen by Wanyi’s audacity. Jue’s hand, seemingly gentle, closed around Jin Wei’s wrist. With a precise, brutal twist, he snapped the youth's forearm, the bone splintering with a dry snap that echoed across the stones. Jin Wei screamed, a choked gurgle of agony. Jue followed up, his fingers digging into a pressure point on Jin Wei’s chest, flooding it with a concentrated burst of his curse. It wouldn't kill, but it would ensure Jin Wei's meridians would forever be crippled, his cultivation shattered. As Jue completed the ruthless act, a new, far more violent tremor shook the arena. The dark paving, already riddled with the pale light of the entity, cracked further, spiderwebbing outwards. A deep, guttural groan reverberated from beneath the arena, echoing through the molar. Then, the calcified ribs of the colossal beast, which formed the very walls of the arena, began to weep. Not the greasy drizzle, but a thick, scarlet fluid, dark as congealed blood, that poured from unseen fissures, bathing the dueling stage in its horrifying ichor. Jue straightened, his gaze fixed on the collapsing floor. He had aimed to cripple, to dismantle. The shattered heir, the weeping titan, it was all part of his defiance. The entity beneath, now fully awake and enraged, was screaming. The arena floor, unable to bear the strain, gave way completely. With a deafening roar, the stone platform fractured into a thousand shards, plummeting into the terrifying abyss below, taking Duanmu Jue and Su Wanyi with it.
