Chapter 8: The Elder's Warning

1.4k words

The heavy bronze chime of the temple vibrated through the limestone walls of the cave. A low, ominous shudder rattled Zahra's teeth, carrying the threat of the village guard. Shahmeer froze above her. His hand, warm and calloused against her bare hip, went completely still. "That is the second watch," he whispered. His breath brushed hot against her ear, smelling faintly of dried mint. "They will be checking the southern paths soon, Zahra." Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic pulse in her throat. If she fled now, she would remain the perfect, dutiful daughter forever, locked in a cage of incense and ancient prayers. The thought made her throat tighten with sudden, violent revulsion. "Don't stop," she breathed. He looked down at her, his dark eyes searching hers in the dim, blue light of the cavern. "Zahra. If they find you here, your father will never let you leave the temple again." "I don't care," she interrupted, her voice cracking with a desperate strength. She wrapped her fingers in his linen collar, pulling him down toward her chest. "Fuck me. Do it now." A low growl escaped his throat, vibrating against her collarbone. The caution in his posture shattered, replaced by a sudden, fierce intensity that made her pulse leap. He pinioned her hands above her head. His grip bruised her wrists against the cold, damp stone floor of the cave. He did not rush, despite the threat of the guards' heavy boots on the paths above. He sank into her with agonizing slowness, stretching her, filling her until she had to bite her lip to keep from crying out. "You want this?" he murmured, his voice a dark, velvety caress near her ear. He withdrew slowly, almost completely, before sliding back in, deep and unyielding. She whimpered, her hips arching off the stone floor to meet him, desperate for the friction. "Yes. Please, Shahmeer." "Then remember this warmth when the elders preach their cold laws," he whispered, his chest pressing hard against her breasts. He kept his movements deliberate, a slow, torturous rhythm that drove her to the absolute edge of her sanity. Every slide of his skin against hers felt magnified by the danger of the echoing chimes outside. Her body coiled tight, a spring wound to its limit. She ached for the release he was so carefully withholding, her nails digging into the rough fabric of his tunic where his grip allowed. He watched her face, his gaze locked onto her parted lips. When she tried to quicken the pace, he held her hips firmly, forcing her to endure the sweet, agonizing friction. Finally, when she thought she would break from the sheer weight of the pleasure, he let go of his restraint. A violent shudder ripped through her as she peaked, her body pulsing around him in tight, desperate waves. He followed her into the dark, his own breath hitching as he spilled inside her, pressing his forehead against hers as they both trembled. --- The cold night air bit at her flushed skin as she scrambled up the narrow, rocky ravine. Her thighs ached with a deep, throbbing soreness, a physical reminder of the heat they had just shared in the dark. She pulled her heavy wool shawl tighter around her shoulders, tucking her damp hair beneath the fabric. Every shadow on the path looked like a temple guard. Every rustle of the dry scrub grass made her breath hitch in her throat. Near the edge of the village, she ducked behind a tall grain silo. The heavy thud of leather boots echoed on the dirt road just yards away. Two guards passed, their iron spears clinking in the dark. The sharp smell of their cheap tobacco drifted through the air, making her press her back harder against the rough wood of the silo. Once the footsteps faded, she darted across the open courtyard to her family's home. She slipped through the back gate of her father's estate, her bare feet silent on the cold flagstones. The house was quiet, smelling of stale jasmine and the bitter wax of expired candles. In her small bedchamber, she quickly stripped off her soiled tunic. She poured cold water from the clay pitcher into a basin, scrubbing her skin with a rough linen cloth to wash away the scent of him. Her hands shook. She looked down at her right hand and gasped softly, catching her breath in the dark. A long, jagged scratch ran across the back of her hand, weeping a thin line of beads of blood. She must have scraped it against the sharp limestone wall when Shahmeer had pinned her wrists. She quickly wrapped a strip of clean cloth around it, tucking the end securely. The pain was nothing compared to the cold panic settling in her chest. A sharp wrap on her door shattered the silence. "Zahra," her father's voice called out, stiff and formal. "The Elder demands your presence in the sanctuary. Immediately." --- The sanctuary was a cavernous hall of black basalt, lit only by the flickering orange glow of fat-tallow candles. The air was thick with the suffocating sweet scent of burning resin. At the far end of the hall, the Village Elder sat upon a high-backed wooden chair, his withered hands resting on his knees. His white robes hung loose on his skeletal frame in the dim light. Her father stood to the side, his head bowed, his hands tucked into his wide sleeves. He did not look at her as she entered, his posture rigid with a tense, silent anxiety. Zahra kept her eyes lowered, her heart drumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She took slow, measured steps, trying to hide the slight limp from her bruised thighs. "Come closer, child," the Elder rasped, his voice like dry autumn leaves scraping across stone. She stepped forward, stopping a few paces from his chair. She knelt, pressing her forehead to the cold stone floor before rising back to her knees. "The sacred chime rang tonight," the Elder began, his milky eyes fixed on her. "A warning. The barrier between our sacred valley and the rot of the outside world is thinning." Zahra kept her breathing even, though her chest felt tight. "I heard it, Elder. I was... praying in my quarters." "The outside world is a disease, Zahra," the Elder continued, ignoring her explanation. "It breeds wildness. It teaches the young to forget their duty, to seek hollow pleasures that lead only to ruin." He leaned forward, his ancient face casting long, distorted shadows across the stone floor. "A woman who forgets her place, who allows the corrupting influence of the wanderers to touch her, is like a rot in the grain," he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "She must be cut out. Burned, if necessary, to save the harvest." Zahra’s guilt solidified into a cold, hard lump of dread. She felt as though he could see right through her clothes, right to the bruises on her hips and the scent of Shahmeer that still clung to her despite the washing. "We must protect the Shard," her father muttered from the shadows, his voice trembling. "We must suppress any spark that threatens to ignite." The Elder nodded slowly. "Indeed. The girl must remain pure. Any deviation will be met with the harshest judgment." He rose from his chair, his joints popping in the silence. He paced toward her, his heavy wool robes sweeping the dust. Holding her breath, she kept her hands tucked beneath her shawl, her fingers desperately gripping the fabric to keep them from shaking. His shadow fell over her as he stopped right in front of her. The scent of old dust and decay rolled off him. "Show me your hands, Zahra," he commanded softly. "Let us pray for your continued strength against temptation." Her breath caught. She slowly brought her hands out from beneath the shawl, keeping her left hand over the wrapped scratch on her right. "Both hands," the Elder whispered. She had no choice. She separated her hands, laying them flat, palms down, on her knees. The white bandage on her right hand stood out starkly in the candlelight. "What is this?" the Elder asked, his hand reaching out to touch her wrist. With agonizing slowness, his long, yellowed fingernail hooked under the edge of the linen wrapping, pulling it back. The Elder's gaze drifts to a half-hidden scratch on Zahra's hand, a faint mark from the cave's rough wall, and a predatory glint enters his ancient eyes.
