Chapter 44: The Tide Turns?

Fingers drummed a restless rhythm on the polished synth-wood table. Kael stared at the data-slate, its screen still dark, a silent challenge in the sterile glow of the small briefing room.
Elara watched him, her own stomach a knot of apprehension. Hours had passed since their broadcast, since they had laid bare the Spire’s foundational truths before every citizen.
Air hummed with unspoken questions. Had their words resonated? Or had the divisions, so carefully manufactured, held too firm?
Chimes sounded, sharp and sudden, from the comm unit on the wall. Kael flinched, then snatched the data-slate, his thumb hovering over the activation pad.
“Go on,” Elara urged, her voice barely a whisper.
He pressed it. Numbers flared across the screen, a dizzying array of percentages and graphs. His eyes scanned, darted, then widened.
A gasp escaped him, a sound caught somewhere between disbelief and relief. He pushed the slate towards her, his hand trembling slightly.
Polls. Early returns. They showed a significant shift. Not a landslide, not yet, but a definite, undeniable movement.
“Look,” he breathed, pointing to a graph. “Public sentiment on the Founders’ Pact… it’s up almost twenty points.”
Elara snatched the slate. Her gaze devoured the information. Approval for shared resource management, empathy for the outer sectors—all had climbed.
Distrust in the ruling council, a metric they hadn't even dared hope to move so quickly, had also seen a noticeable increase.
“People are listening,” she whispered, a fragile hope blossoming in her chest. “They’re actually listening.”
Hope flickered, then intensified, a warm current against the icy fear that had gripped her for weeks. Their gamble had paid off, at least partially.
“It’s not just a blip,” Kael added, a new energy in his voice. “The trend lines are steep. This isn’t just curiosity; it’s reconsideration.”
He pulled up a regional breakdown. Even in sectors traditionally loyal to the established families, cracks were appearing.
