Chapter 1 of 1

Whispers in the Gloom

441 words

Morning brought no relief from the tension hanging over the penthouse. The torrential rain from the night before had turned into a steady, dreary drizzle. Maya woke up early, her mind racing with a million questions about her new life and the cold, unreadable man who was now her husband. She dressed in a simple, elegant dark blue silk suit and stepped out into the main hallway. The mansion was vast and quiet, its marble floors reflecting the dim morning light. As she walked toward the dining area, she noticed a heavy wooden door tucked away at the end of the corridor—slightly ajar. Driven by curiosity, Maya took a few tentative steps toward it. Just as her hand reached for the brass handle, a firm voice shattered the silence behind her. "I wouldn't go in there if I were you." Maya spun around, her heart jumping into her throat. Standing a few feet away was Aditya, Alejandro’s younger brother and the head of security for Vance Enterprises. Unlike Alejandro’s sharp, intimidating presence, Aditya carried a quiet, watchful demeanor. "I... I was just looking around," Maya said, taking a step back from the door. Aditya offered a faint, sympathetic smile, though his eyes remained serious. "This place has many rooms, Maya. Some are best left unopened. Alejandro values his privacy above everything else." "Including secrets about his past?" Maya asked, unable to suppress the urge to learn more about the man who held her family's future in his hands. Aditya’s smile faded slightly. "Especially those. Just be careful. Alejandro isn't a cruel man, but he has been through things that made his heart cold. Don't push him too far." Before Maya could ask anything further, heavy footsteps echoed down the marble hallway. Alejandro stepped into view, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. His gaze swept over Maya and Aditya, sharp and discerning. "Aditya," Alejandro acknowledged cold, his voice cutting through the air. "The car is waiting downstairs. We have the board meeting." Aditya nodded respectfully to both of them and walked away, leaving Maya alone once again with Alejandro. Alejandro walked up to Maya, stopping just inches away. His eyes scanned her face, taking in her guarded expression. "You seem eager to explore my home, Maya." "Is that a crime?" she countered softly, meeting his intense gaze. "No," Alejandro whispered, leaning closer until his breath brushed against her cheek. "But in this house, curiosity often comes with a price. Make sure you're prepared to pay it." He turned and walked toward the private elevator, leaving Maya standing in the hallway with a chilling mix of fear and curiosity lingering in her heart.
