Chapter 6: The Queen of Capital Arrives
1.5k words
The atmosphere in the Fu Group's top-floor boardroom was suffocating. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but it felt cold, sterile. Fu Jinyan sat at the head of the long obsidian table, his jaw a granite-hard line. His knuckles were white where he gripped a pen, the pressure threatening to snap it in two.
His top executives, men who commanded respect across the city, sat with rigid backs and tense faces, their gazes fixed on the imposing double doors. Before them lay the proposal for the 'Stardust Chip' project—the company's most ambitious and expensive venture, a technological gamble that would either cement the Fu Group's legacy or shatter it into a million pieces.
It was already shattering.
A key investor had pulled out unexpectedly, a corporate ambush that left a gaping, ten-billion-dollar hole in their funding. Panic was a corrosive acid eating away at the company's foundations.
Their only lifeline was the Athena Fund.
The name alone was a legend in global finance. An enigmatic, trillion-dollar behemoth that moved markets with a whisper. Its director was a ghost, a myth. No one knew their name, their face, or their gender. All they knew was that Athena's director was notoriously ruthless, possessing an almost supernatural instinct for investment and an absolute intolerance for weakness.
Securing this meeting had cost Fu Jinyan a fortune in political capital. It was their last and only shot.
"Mr. Fu," his assistant, Chen, leaned in, whispering, his voice tight with anxiety. "They've entered the building. They'll be up in two minutes."
Fu Jinyan gave a curt nod, but his mind wasn't entirely there. It kept replaying the scene from yesterday. Su Luo's cold, clear eyes. The way she'd dropped that cheap ring as if it were trash. The unnerving emptiness that had followed her departure.
"Any news?" Fu Jinyan asked in a low growl, his question unrelated to the impending meeting.
Chen understood immediately. "Sir, the investigation is... strange. The license plate of the car that picked up the former Mrs. Fu is registered to a shell company that dissolved an hour after she left. The men are ghosts—no records, no digital footprint. As for the fire three years ago... the records are sealed by an authority so high, even my contacts are afraid to touch it."
Fu Jinyan's frown deepened. Sealed? Afraid? A blind, orphaned woman with no background had connections that could make his best investigators tremble? The feeling of being utterly out of control, a sensation he despised, coiled in his gut like a snake.
Suddenly, a soft, cloying voice broke his concentration. "Jinyan, don't worry. You're the most brilliant man I know. This Athena Fund will surely see the value in your vision."
Lin Yao had appeared by his side, placing a delicate hand on his shoulder. She had insisted on being present, wanting to be seen as the future matriarch of the Fu Group. She wore a pristine white dress, her expression a perfect blend of concern and admiration. Usually, her presence soothed his frayed nerves. Today, it felt like a grating noise.
*"Lin Yao, the day you're exposed will be the day you wish you were dead."*
Su Luo's parting words echoed in his mind, sharp and venomous. He brushed Lin Yao's hand off his shoulder with a sharp, almost impatient movement.
*DING.*
The sound of the private elevator arriving was like a gunshot in the silent room. Every executive straightened up. Fu Jinyan pushed all other thoughts from his mind, his face hardening into a mask of cold, corporate dominance.
This was his territory. He would not fail.
The grand double doors swung open silently, pushed by two immaculately dressed bodyguards who looked like they'd stepped out of a special forces unit. They stood flanking the entrance, their presence alone sucking the air out of the room.
Then, a team of six individuals—three men, three women—strode in. They moved with a synchronized, unnerving grace. Dressed in tailored dark suits, they carried themselves with the lethal confidence of sharks. One of them held a tablet, her eyes scanning the room as if cataloging every threat.
This was Athena's legendary entourage.
The executives held their breath. Fu Jinyan stood, a gesture of respect for a power equal to his own. Lin Yao clung to his arm, trying to project an image of a power couple.
The team parted, creating a clear path.
And then, she appeared.
The first thing they heard was the sound. A soft, rhythmic *click-clack* on the marble floor. It was the sound of custom-made stiletto heels, each step precise, deliberate, and utterly commanding.
The shoes came into view first—sleek, black, with a blood-red sole. They were an icon of wealth so extreme it was almost obscene. The gaze of everyone in the room traveled up from the shoes. They saw a figure encased in a crimson haute couture power suit, tailored so perfectly it looked like a second skin, accentuating a slender waist and powerful shoulders. A single, enormous diamond brooch glittered at her lapel, catching the light and fracturing it into a thousand tiny rainbows.
Finally, they saw her face.
Time stopped. The air solidified. In the center of the silent boardroom, under the collective shocked gaze of the city's most powerful men, stood Su Luo.
But it was not the Su Luo they knew. The timid, submissive woman with the perpetually downcast, hollow eyes was gone. In her place stood a queen.
Her hair was styled in sleek, elegant waves that cascaded over one shoulder. Her makeup was sharp and flawless, her lips painted a defiant, blood-red that matched her suit. But her eyes... dear god, her eyes.
They were no longer empty. They were no longer blind.
They were bright, sharp, and blazing with an intelligence so fierce it was terrifying. They were the eyes of a predator, glittering with cold amusement as she scanned the room of stunned executives, her gaze finally landing on the man at the head of the table.
Fu Jinyan felt as if a bolt of lightning had shot through his spine, rooting him to the spot. His brain short-circuited. The world tilted on its axis, sound fading to a dull roar in his ears. Su Luo? His blind, worthless, gold-digging ex-wife... was the mythical director of the Athena Fund? It was impossible. A trick. A hallucination.
Lin Yao was the first to break the spell, her voice a shrill shriek of disbelief. "Su Luo?! What in the world are you doing here? Did you follow me? Security!" She waved a frantic hand. "SECURITY! Get this shameless woman out of here! She has no right to be in this building!"
Su Luo's gaze didn't even flicker towards Lin Yao. It was the ultimate insult, a dismissal so complete it was more brutal than any retort. She simply raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow and spoke to her lead assistant, her voice as smooth as silk and as cold as a glacier.
"Evelyn. Is this the standard of decorum at the Fu Group? Make a note. It's... disappointing."
"Yes, Director," the woman named Evelyn replied, her fingers tapping on her tablet without missing a beat.
Fu Jinyan finally found his voice, a choked, ragged sound ripped from his throat. "Su Luo... what is this? What sick game are you playing?"
For the first time, Su Luo's lips curved into a smile. It wasn't warm. It was a chilling, beautiful, terrifying sight. She took a few more steps, the sound of her heels echoing the frantic pounding in his heart. She stopped directly across the table from him, the vast expanse of polished obsidian reflecting their two figures like warring monarchs.
"Game? Mr. Fu, I think you have me mistaken for the pathetic creature you kept locked in your villa for three years," she said, her voice dangerously soft. "I am Su Luo, Chief Director of the Athena Fund. And I am here to decide if your little 'Stardust' project is worth my time, or if I should let it burn to the ground."
She gracefully took her seat at the head of the table—his seat. She ran a gloved finger over the cover of his proposal, the document that held the future of his entire empire. Her eyes, burning with a cold fire he'd never seen before, locked onto his.
"So, Fu Jinyan," she purred, leaning forward slightly. "The fate of everything you've built rests in the palm of my hand. The hand of the woman you called worthless trash."
She paused, letting the weight of her words crush him. Her gaze flickered for a brief second to the pale, trembling Lin Yao.
"First order of business," Su Luo's voice dropped, becoming a blade of pure ice. "Get that woman out of my sight. Her presence offends me. You have sixty seconds before I walk."
