Chapter 18: The Fated Blade

The scent hit Su Luo the moment she stepped through the door. It wasn't the familiar, sterile cleanness of the villa she'd called a cage for three years. It was sharp, acrid, and nauseatingly familiar. Gasoline. Her eyes, once deliberately empty, narrowed into obsidian slits. They swept across the grand foyer, missing nothing in the dim evening light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The polished marble floor was slick with a dark, iridescent sheen. The air was thick with flammable promise. A trap. Crude, but deadly. “I wouldn’t take another step if I were you, Mrs. Fu.” The voice was rough, coming from the deep shadows near the staircase. A hulking figure detached itself from the darkness, a lit cigarette dangling carelessly from his lips. A single spark. Su Luo’s expression didn’t flicker. She remained perfectly still, her posture radiating a calm that was more terrifying than any scream. “You must be the welcoming party Lin Yao arranged.” The man’s eyes widened in surprise. He’d been told he was dealing with a blind, helpless woman. This… this was a queen surveying an inconvenience. He took a nervous drag from his cigarette. “Doesn't matter who sent me. What matters is that this whole place is about to go up in flames. With you in it.” “For money,” Su Luo stated, her voice a silken thread of ice. “How much is she paying you to trade your life for mine?” The thug laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “My life? I’ll be long gone before the first responders even get the call. You’re the one who’s trapped, blind bitch.” He took a step forward, enjoying the power. But Su Luo’s lips curved into a smile that held no warmth, only derision. It was the smile of a predator. “Who told you I was blind?” she asked softly. Her gaze locked onto his. Not a vague, unfocused stare, but a direct, piercing look that seemed to strip him bare. The thug froze, the cigarette smoke catching in his throat. He saw the cold, sharp intelligence in her eyes, the utter lack of fear. A chill, colder than the gasoline-soaked air, slithered down his spine. “You… you can see?” he stammered, his bravado crumbling. “I see everything,” Su Luo’s voice dropped, each word a perfectly polished stone of menace. “I see a coward who attacks women for money. I see a fool who thinks a little gasoline can stop me. And I see a dead man who doesn’t even know it yet.” She took a deliberate step forward, the sound of her heel clicking on the marble echoing like a gunshot in the tense silence. The man flinched, instinctively taking a step back. Suddenly, the front door burst open again. A frantic, high-pitched voice sliced through the tension. “What are you waiting for?! Do it! Burn her! Burn everything!” Lin Yao stood silhouetted in the doorway, her face a twisted mask of desperation and madness. Her designer dress was rumpled, her hair in disarray. The elegant facade she wore for Fu Jinyan had been completely shattered, revealing the frantic monster beneath. She stomped into the foyer, her eyes wild. “Su Luo! It’s over! Did you really think you could win? After everything I’ve done to keep you down, to keep you in your place?” Su Luo’s cold gaze shifted from the thug to her so-called best friend. “So the rat finally comes out of her hole.” “I’m not a rat! I’m the rightful Mrs. Fu!” Lin Yao shrieked, her voice cracking. “I saved him! Three years ago, in that fire, I was the one who pulled him out! Not you! He owes his life to me! He belongs to me!” The thug looked between the two women, sweat beading on his forehead. This was more than he’d signed up for. “You told everyone I was responsible for that fire,” Su Luo said, her voice dangerously level. “You let him hate me for three years. For a lie.” “He never would have looked at you otherwise!” Lin Yao screamed, her confession tumbling out in a torrent of rage. “You were always so perfect, the beloved daughter of the Su family! I had to take something! I took his love! And now, I’ll take your life!” Just as Lin Yao’s scream reached its peak, another figure appeared in the open doorway. Tall, imposing, his face a thundercloud of disbelief and horror. Fu Jinyan. He had followed her. The knot of unease in his gut after the confrontation at Elysium had grown into a raging storm of obsession. He couldn’t let her go. He had to see her, to understand the woman who had looked through him as if he were nothing. Now, he stood frozen, his world tilting on its axis. Gasoline. A hired thug. And Lin Yao… screaming her confession. *I saved him… I was the one who pulled him out…* The words echoed in his skull, a battering ram against the fortress of lies he had built around his heart. His gaze flew from Lin Yao’s insane, contorted face to Su Luo’s. She stood in the center of the room, impossibly poised, her expression an unreadable mask of ice. She wasn’t scared. She wasn’t even surprised. “Jinyan?” Lin Yao gasped, her eyes widening in terror as she saw him. Her plan was unraveling. Everything was lost. “Lin Yao… what did you just say?” Fu Jinyan’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble. Panic seized her. All reason fled. Her wild gaze darted around, landing on the thug. He was holding a utility knife, its blade glinting. In a flash, Lin Yao lunged, snatching the knife from his stunned grasp. “It’s her fault!” she shrieked, pointing the blade at Su Luo. “She’s ruined everything! If I can’t have you, then she can’t have anything! She has to die!” With a guttural scream of pure madness, Lin Yao charged at Su Luo. Time seemed to warp and slow. Su Luo’s eyes narrowed, her body tensing to disarm the attack. She was faster, stronger than Lin Yao could ever imagine. But someone else was faster. A black shadow blurred past her peripheral vision. An arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her back with brutal force. Fu Jinyan. He threw himself in front of her, a human shield against Lin Yao’s deranged assault. There was a sickening, wet thud. Lin Yao’s crazed momentum stopped. Her eyes were wide with shock, staring at the knife in her hand. Its blade had disappeared, buried deep in Fu Jinyan’s side. A ragged gasp tore from his lips. His body went rigid. Su Luo felt the powerful arms holding her go slack. She looked down. A dark, crimson stain was blooming with terrifying speed across the pristine white of his shirt. His blood. Warm and sticky, it began to seep onto her own hands. He staggered, his weight collapsing against her. “Su… Luo…” he whispered, his eyes locking with hers, filled with a universe of pain, confusion, and a desperate, unspoken question. Her icy composure finally, irrevocably, shattered. Not into fear, but into something far more terrifying. She held him, feeling the life draining from him, staining her skin. Slowly, her head lifted. Her gaze moved past Fu Jinyan’s paling face, past the blood, and settled on the trembling, horrified form of Lin Yao. The air in the room crackled. The scent of gasoline was replaced by the coppery tang of blood and the chilling promise of absolute vengeance. “Lin Yao,” Su Luo’s voice was unnaturally calm, a whisper that carried more weight than any scream. “You just signed your own death warrant.”
