Chapter 3: The Shadow's First Harvest
1.3k words
Each rustle of leaves, each distant snap of a twig, resonated with unsettling clarity in Lin Xiao’s ears. His newly sharpened senses, a byproduct of the Demonic Qi now coursing through his veins, made the forest a symphony of vulnerabilities. He no longer merely saw the three Verdant Peak Sect disciples; he tasted their fear, the faint metallic tang of their sweat, the uneasy rhythm of their breaths as they trekked deeper into the shadowed ravine. They were young, perhaps barely out of their Foundation Establishment trials, their cultivation fluctuating between Qi Condensation Stage 4 and 5. Enough to defend themselves against a stray beast, but not against the nascent predator watching from the shadows.
The Spirit Calming Grass, clutched carefully by the lead disciple in a small, shimmering satchel, pulsed with a gentle spiritual aura. It was a common, yet valuable, resource, essential for cultivators struggling with Qi deviation or those seeking to refine their spiritual foundations. For Lin Xiao, it represented more than just a resource; it was a stepping stone, a means to an end. The Villain System had made its decree clear: embrace villainy, ascend to power. And this, these three naive cultivators, were his first opportunity.
He watched them for a full hour, a statue of dark intent hidden amongst the dense foliage. Their chatter was mundane, complaining about the arduous journey, the lack of proper spiritual wine, and the overbearing elders back at the Verdant Peak. Their grievances were petty, their world small and sheltered. Lin Xiao found their innocence almost offensive. It was a luxury he had never known, one he was now destined to strip from others.
A narrow, winding path, barely wide enough for two people abreast, appeared ahead. Steep rock faces rose on either side, their surfaces slick with moss and dampness. An ideal ambush point. He noted the lead disciple’s slightly strained expression, the way his shoulders slumped just a fraction. Fatigue was setting in, dulling their senses, making them careless. This was it.
Lin Xiao’s Demonic Qi stirred, a cold, hungry presence within him. Unlike the righteous Qi, which felt like a gentle tide, his was a surging storm, dark and potent. He focused, drawing a thread of this malevolent energy to his fingertips, shaping it. He wasn’t aiming for a direct confrontation. That would be messy, potentially risky. He needed swift, clean incapacitation, and a plausible narrative for the aftermath.
His plan was simple yet effective: cause a controlled chaos, snatch the prize, and leave behind enough misleading evidence to sow discord. The Verdant Peak Sect was a bastion of righteousness, but even righteous sects had rivals. The Blazing Sun Sect, known for its fiery cultivation techniques and hot-headed disciples, immediately came to mind. They had a history of minor skirmishes over territory and resources with the Verdant Peak. A perfect scapegoat.
"Keep your eyes peeled, Brother Jian," one of the disciples, a plump young man with an anxious face, mumbled, wiping sweat from his brow. "This ravine feels… off."
"Nonsense, Brother Li," the leader, Jian, replied with feigned confidence. "It's just the shadows. We're almost out." His voice, however, held a tremor that belied his words.
Lin Xiao waited until they were precisely in the middle of the choke point. Then, with a silent leap, he sprang. Not at them directly, but into the dense canopy above, a blur of shadow. He focused his Demonic Qi into a potent, yet localized, burst. He didn't need to kill them, just incapacitate.
Three swift, precise strikes. First, a tiny, almost invisible pellet of dark energy, propelled by the force of his Demonic Qi, struck the back of Jian's neck, just below the hairline. It was a pressure point, a nerve cluster. Jian’s eyes widened in shock, his body seizing, then slumping forward, unconscious before he even hit the ground.
The other two reacted instantly, their hands flying to their sword hilts. But Lin Xiao was already moving. He landed silently behind Brother Li, his hand a dark claw, pressing firmly against another pressure point on his spine. Li’s eyes rolled back, a guttural gasp escaping him before he, too, collapsed.
Only the third disciple, a petite young woman with sharp eyes, remained. Her sword, drawn in a flash of silver, hummed with nascent Qi. "Who's there?!" she cried, her voice trembling but defiant. She was quicker than her companions, her senses slightly more refined. A flicker of respect, grudging and fleeting, passed through Lin Xiao. But it changed nothing.
He met her gaze from the shadows of the rock face, not speaking, not revealing his face. The sheer, oppressive aura of his Demonic Qi was enough. It was raw, untamed, the scent of fresh blood and ancient malice. The girl froze, her sword point wavering. Fear, pure and unadulterated, choked her. She was a lamb facing a shadow wolf, her instinct screaming flight.
As her attention locked onto the menacing presence he projected, Lin Xiao moved, a phantom of motion. He didn’t touch her. Instead, a whisper of Demonic Qi, cold as a tomb, brushed past her ear, laced with a suggestion of dark despair. It was a rudimentary mental attack, a mere flick of his nascent Demonic Soul, but it was enough. Her defiant eyes lost their focus, her grip on the sword loosened, and she crumpled, unconscious, onto the rocky path.
"Target acquired. Rewards calculating..." The System's voice echoed in his mind, devoid of emotion, yet carrying an undeniable thrill for Lin Xiao. He felt a surge of dark energy wash over him, a small but potent infusion. It was invigorating, a testament to his success.
[System Notification: First act of overt villainy complete. Resources acquired. Reward: 100 Villainy Points. Demonic Qi Cultivation boosted. Current Stage: Demonic Qi Condensation Stage 1 (85% progress).]
He knelt beside Jian, carefully extracting the shimmering satchel. Inside, the Spirit Calming Grass lay nestled amongst other, less significant herbs. Lin Xiao took only the valuable grass, replacing it with a small, innocuous leather pouch he had prepared. This pouch contained a few trinkets: a small, intricately carved wooden token bearing the symbol of the Blazing Sun Sect, and a scorched, slightly bent arrow, tipped with a distinct, fiery feather – a common projectile used by Blazing Sun disciples for hunting.
He scattered some leaves, kicked a few loose stones, making the scene appear as if there had been a struggle. He even used a tiny amount of his Demonic Qi to scorch the edges of Jian's robes, making it seem like a stray blast from a fire-attributed technique had caught him. Then, he took a moment, carefully smearing a small amount of blood from a previously caught forest rodent onto the Blazing Sun token, ensuring it looked like it had been dropped during a hasty retreat.
He surveyed his handiwork. Three unconscious Verdant Peak disciples, stripped of their most valuable cargo, and a trail of planted evidence suggesting a vicious ambush by their long-standing rivals. The Blazing Sun Sect would be furious at the accusation, the Verdant Peak Sect would demand retribution, and the seeds of inter-sect conflict would be sown.
"Excellent," Lin Xiao muttered, a cruel smile touching his lips. The Demonic Qi within him hummed with satisfaction, responding to his dark ambition. This was just the beginning. The continent yearned for stability, but he would ensure it found only chaos. With the Spirit Calming Grass secured, he would further his cultivation, and the path to becoming a true Demonic Sovereign stretched out before him, clear and blood-stained.
He vanished into the deeper shadows of the forest, the stolen resources now safely tucked away in his spatial ring, leaving the three unconscious disciples and the carefully crafted illusion of an ambush behind him. The sun began its slow descent, painting the western sky in hues of orange and purple, oblivious to the rising shadow that had just taken its first significant step on the path of villainy. The world, he knew, would soon learn to fear the name Lin Xiao.
