Chapter 2: Shocking Truths
1.2k words
Cold ocean breeze whipped through the open windows of the Venture Hotel cabin. Morning light cut across the dusty floorboards, waking the contestants with the smell of mold and salty air.
Screaming broke the silence before the sun fully cleared the horizon.
Judie stood on a rotting wooden table in the center of the cabin, brandishing a rusty butter knife. Her eyes were wide, pupils dilated as she pointed the dull blade at a spider crawling up the wall.
"Quiet down, psycho!" Rosee yelled, throwing a heavy designer pillow at her. "Some of us need our beauty sleep if we're going to survive this cheap dump!"
Under his bunk bed, Rick watched the chaos with a calm, calculating smile. He rubbed his hands together, his mind already spinning new webs to trap his next target. Amber was gone, and he had proven his power on the Eagles team.
Outside, the gravel path crunched under heavy boots.
Dannie cornered Thomas near the communal showers, her eyes darting around to make sure they were alone. She leaned in, trying to look mysterious and commanding.
"We need an alliance," Dannie whispered, tapping her chin with a manicured nail. "You, me, and maybe Mary. We can run this island from the background."
Thomas rubbed his neck, his muscles tense from an intense morning workout. He looked down at her with pure skepticism.
"I only ally with winners," Thomas said, stepping past her without a second glance. "And right now, you look like a liability."
Across the dirt clearing, the Jaguars were having their own issues.
Rick strolled over to their side of the camp, carrying a plate of burnt toast. He offered a warm, uncle-like smile to anyone who made eye contact, playing the friendly older man to perfection.
"Morning, kids," Rick said, his voice dripping with false warmth. "Rough night?"
Kiro rolled his eyes, adjusting his rainbow sweatband. He crossed his arms and smirked.
"He's up to something," Kiro whispered to Jack, who was busy lifting a heavy log for exercise. "Nobody is that nice at forty years old on a reality show."
Meanwhile, Judie had wandered away from her team's cabin, her feet dragging through the dense undergrowth behind the hotel.
Clods of dirt flew into the air as she began digging a hole for no apparent reason. Her fingers hit something hard and metallic.
Splinters of wood peeled back to reveal a cheap, gold-painted skull hidden inside a rotten tree stump. A small tag hung from its jaw: *Immunity Idol. Play before the votes are read.*
"Look at you, pretty little shiny face," Judie giggled, shoving the skull directly into her messy hair like a bizarre hairpin. "You're my new best friend."
Hours later, a loud, piercing siren echoed across the island.
James stood on a makeshift wooden stage, wearing his signature sunglasses and a sadistic grin. Beside him, Ivan lay on a beach chair, lazily sipping a coconut through a straw.
"Welcome, players, to your second challenge!" James boomed, pointing to a massive, rumbling generator connected to two metal chairs. "We call this Truth, Dare, or Shock!"
Metal wires sparkled with blue static electricity, sending a collective shiver through the remaining fifteen contestants.
"Rules are simple," Ivan muttered, not even looking up from her drink. "Answer a highly embarrassing truth, complete a dangerous dare, or get blasted with five hundred volts. First team to reach ten points wins immunity. Losers go to tribal."
First up was Kiro for the Jaguars.
Stepping up to the chair, Kiro strapped himself in, his jaw clenching as the metal clamps locked around his wrists.
"Who on your team do you find the most annoying?" James asked, leaning in with a wicked smile.
Kiro didn't hesitate, pointing his chin toward Kaleb.
"Kaleb. He has the personality of a wet cardboard box and smells like one too," Kiro stated proudly.
Sweat beaded on Kaleb's forehead as he glared back. The green light flashed, confirming Kiro's truth, and the Jaguars took the first point.
"No shock for you," James chuckled. "Too bad. I wanted to see your hair stand up."
Sparks flew when the Eagles took their turn.
Next up was Joe, the emo boy. He sat in the chair, staring blankly at the electrodes.
Screaming didn't even happen when James hit the switch after Joe chose the shock instead of answering a personal question about his childhood diary.
"Is that all you got?" Joe mumbled, his body twitching slightly as smoke rolled off his black hoodie. "I've felt worse emotional pain anyway."
Honey stepped up next for the Jaguars. Her dare was to eat a live, aggressive island crab.
Crawling toward her, the crab waved its claws menacingly.
Honey simply smiled, a terrifying, unhinged grin that made even James take a step back. She grabbed the crab and bit its leg off with a loud crunch.
Everyone gasped in horror, while Sabbie began praying rapidly under her breath.
Tension grew thicker as the score tied at nine to nine.
Rosee was the final player for the Jaguars. She sat in the chair, looking disgusted by the sweat left behind by previous players.
"Tell us," James grinned, "is it true that you secretly wear hair extensions because your real hair is balding from bleach?"
Glaring at the host, Rosee's face flushed deep red.
"My hair is one hundred percent natural, you absolute creep!" Rosee shrieked.
Zap!
Blue electricity surged through her body, her designer clothes smoking as her hair puffed out into a wild, frizzy halo. The lie detector buzzer wailed.
Smoke drifted from Rosee's ears as she slumped in the chair, whimpering.
"That's a lie, and a loss for the Jaguars!" James laughed hysterically. "Eagles win immunity! Jaguars, I will see you at the elimination bonfire tonight!"
Back at the cabins, panic set in.
Gathering her team, Rosee pointed a trembling, soot-stained finger at Kaleb.
"We are voting him out!" Rosee raged, her voice cracking. "He didn't even try during his dare! He's useless!"
Kaleb spat on the ground near her expensive shoes.
"Go ahead," Kaleb sneered. "I hate all of you anyway. But you're the one who lost us the game because of your vanity."
Mary tried to smooth things over, applying a fresh coat of lip gloss. "Honestly, Rosee, your hair does look a bit thin today."
Rick, watching from the edge of the woods, saw his opportunity. He quietly walked over to Thomas and Jack, keeping his voice low and fatherly.
"Listen, boys," Rick whispered. "Rosee is a loose cannon. She's going to tear this team apart with her drama. We need strength. We need to vote her out tonight."
Dusk fell quickly, turning the island into a shadow-filled maze.
Torches flickered around the stone amphitheater as the Jaguars took their seats.
James stood behind a podium, holding a tray of glowing room keys.
"Welcome to your first elimination, Jaguars," James said, his eyes scanning their nervous faces. "You've cast your votes. When I call your name, come get your key. The player without a key must pack their bags and leave immediately."
Walking up one by one, the players grabbed their keys.
"First key goes to Jack," James announced. "Kiro. Mary. Thomas. Judie."
Casting a smug look at Kaleb, Rosee smirked, fully expecting him to go home.
"If I count the votes, we have a tie," James said, holding the final key. "Unless... does anyone have a hidden immunity idol they'd like to play?"
Reaching into her messy hair, Judie pulled out the gold skull and threw it directly at Kaleb's chest.
"Wait, what?" Rosee gasped, her eyes widening.
Everyone gasped as the skull clattered against Kaleb's knees.
"I don't want the angry boy to leave!" Judie yelled, clapping her hands. "The forest spirits told me he makes great mud pies!"
James grinned, his eyes gleaming with delight.
"That is a valid immunity idol!" James declared. "Any votes cast for Kaleb will not count. Let's read the ballots."
Rosee's jaw dropped as James pulled out the papers.
"First vote... Kaleb. Does not count. Second vote... Kaleb. Does not count. Third vote... Kaleb. Does not count."
Two more votes for Kaleb were tossed aside, leaving only the remaining ballots.
"Next vote... Rosee. Rosee. Rosee. That's four votes Rosee. The final vote... and the person leaving Venture Hotel tonight is... Rosee!"
"You absolute backstabbing snakes!" Rosee screamed, jumping out of her seat. She pointed a manicured finger directly at Rick. "You think you're safe? I know what you did! I saw your notebook! I know about your secret alliance with—"
