Chapter 2 of 10
The Spire's New Queen

Ryzalia pressed her thumbs hard against the data-slate, the smooth composite biting into her palms. Obliterating the Rust-Steppes. Her home. She’d always known Kylian was a thief, a parasite, but this… this was an act of genocide. She raised her chin to meet Voldir Hext's gaze. “How long?”
“The broadcast is scheduled for the end of the month. Three weeks, eight days from today,” Voldir replied, his voice a low current. “That was the original timeline.”
“And the new one?” Ryzalia pressed, a cold certainty already forming in her gut. Kylian would be panicking now. His public humiliation, Hext’s declaration—he’d accelerate everything.
“My intelligence operatives are monitoring the Morcrest data-streams for any shift. We will know,” Voldir assured her, a subtle lift of his chin. “For now, you will prepare. You have the Hext Syndicate Spire at your disposal. Every resource. Every fabricator. Every scrap of technology you could possibly conceive. And a private army, should you require it.”
Hours later, the dreadnought docked with the Spire’s highest air-dock. The Hext Syndicate Spire was not a building; it was a mountain of obsidian synth-steel, spearing the clouds like a petrified titan. Glazed panels, dark as polished onyx, shimmered under the Zenith District’s artificial suns. Within, filtered vents hissed over the low, rhythmic hum of sub-floor dynamos. Guards in sleek, black armor, their helmets obscuring their faces, moved with predatory grace through wide, sterile corridors.
Ryzalia found her lab on the 107th floor, a sprawling wing named the ‘Chronos Forge.’ The doors hissed open, revealing a cavernous space bathed in the cool glow of a thousand holographic displays. Thread-weave blueprints spun in midair, a geometric diagram of routing lines and gravimetric emitters. Workbenches stretched into the distance, laden with a dizzying array of precision tools, rare earth elements, and raw fabrication materials she’d only ever dreamed of seeing. A pristine fabrication arm, its multi-jointed appendages gleaming, stood poised beside a molecular assembler capable of crafting objects atom by atom. This wasn't just a workspace; it was an arsenal engineered for pure retribution.
“Impressive, isn’t it?” A voice, smooth as polished ceramite, cut through the quiet hum of the machinery. Ryzalia turned. Leaning against a workstation terminal, tracking her with an unblinking appraisal, stood a man in a slate-gray suit. His dark hair was clipped sharp, setting off an aquiline nose and pale gray irises. Isken Varga, Voldir’s corporate fixer. The fixer who had carved his tier in the Syndicate through clinical efficiency and a mind built for architectural leverage.
“It’ll do,” Ryzalia said, a sardonic twist to her lips. She walked past him, knuckles brushing a pane that projected an entangled power coil. “You’re here to babysit, I assume? Make sure the wild country girl doesn’t break anything?”
Isken pushed away from the workstation, his footing quiet and measured. “I’m here to ensure you adhere to the Syndicate’s operational protocols and maintain optimal efficiency. Lord Hext values your talents, Ryzalia Morcrest. But he values his investment more. Any deviation, any emotional outburst that jeopardizes the objective, will be handled with extreme prejudice.” His voice was a low warning, edged with an authority he clearly expected her to heed. He took another step forward, closing the distance, his personal aegis grid hummed faintly at his collar, a subtle warning.
Ryzalia stopped. She turned slowly, her gaze locking with his. “Extreme prejudice, you say?” A faint smile, devoid of humor, touched her lips. She raised one hand, snapping her thumb against two knuckles to trip an overlay sequence across her optical link. Her lips moved, a silent incantation of code. Isken’s barrier field, a solid envelope seconds prior, stuttered. The luminescent polygons warped, buckling inward under inverse frequencies. A concussive shock buckled back into his ribs. He stumbled back, colliding with the nearest workbench with a sharp clang of metal, the breath knocked cleanly from his throat. The force field, polarized against his own unit, flattened him against the cold synth-steel rim like a pegged specimen.
Her hand dropped. Isken, immobilized, stared at her, a flicker of something raw and intense in his glacial eyes. His chest rose and fell in rapid succession. Ryzalia stepped closer, her voice a low, dangerous purr. “I don’t need babysitting, Varga. And I don’t follow protocols I didn’t write. You try to control me again, and I’ll turn your own tech against you so effectively, you’ll be lucky to power a toaster.”
A beat of silence stretched, taut as a wire. Isken’s gaze remained fixed on hers, the initial shock replaced by a simmering intensity that mirrored her own. A faint, almost imperceptible smile played on his lips. “Noted, maker. An unexpected talent. I stand corrected.” The inverted field popped and dissolved into static, releasing him. He pushed off the workbench, regaining his composure with effortless grace, though a faint flush touched his high cheekbones.
Before either could speak, the terminal behind them sounded a three-tone klaxon. A red warning icon flashed: *Priority Comms Breach – Unidentified Source.*
Isken crossed to the terminal in two strides, keying through the inputs. “Unidentified? How? This network is impenetrable.”
Ryzalia watched over his shoulder. A grainy, distorted image solidified on the screen. A woman’s face, pale and framed by dark hair, filled the display. Her gaze shifted continually past her own lens, monitoring the corridor behind her. “Ryzalia? Isken? Can you hear me?” The voice was a whisper, laced with static, yet chillingly clear. “It’s Nimra Shale. Kylian’s publicist.”
Isken leaned over the sensor array. “Nimra. Explain this breach.”
“He knows,” Nimra’s voice was barely audible, a frantic rush of words. “He knows Hext is moving. He’s panicked. He’s pulling the activation forward. An emergency broadcast. Tomorrow, during the morning news cycle, he’s going to announce the ‘breakthrough’ and power the Zenith District… He’s securing his monopoly. If you want to ruin him, I have the broadcast schematics... but the activation is in three days.”
