Chapter 2: The Price of a Bow

1.2k words

Ash tasted like charred bone. Atlas spat onto the cracked asphalt, his lungs burning with every breath. Firelight painted the ruined walls of Enclave 9 in shifting shades of blood and amber. Silence hung heavy over the courtyard, broken only by the crackle of burning wood and the distant, agonizing screams of those being hunted in the lower sectors. Clutched tightly in his left hand, Silas's customized composite bow felt like an ice block. Dragging his boots through the rubble, Atlas tried to find his footing amidst the debris of his former life. Heavy, metallic, and customized with carbon-fiber stabilizers, the weapon was something he had only ever watched Silas polish from afar. "Just breathe," Atlas whispered to himself, plastering a wide, painful grin across his face. His lips pulled back over his teeth, a stark, terrifying contrast to the horror reflecting in his wide eyes. Overhead, a low hum vibrated through the thick smog. Whirring quietly, a vampire scout hovered near the collapsed watchtower. Cybernetic optical sensors on the creature's mask whined as they scanned the dead bodies littering the ground. If those crimson lenses locked onto Atlas, his life expectancy would drop to seconds. Crouching behind a shattered concrete barrier, Atlas lifted the bow. Blue system light flickered in his peripheral vision, displaying the newly acquired skill: [Master Archery - Level 4]. Whispering warnings pulsed in red beneath the skill name, warning him of potential mental instability. This was the curse of his Grave-Robber's Empathy. His fingers, calloused in places they had been smooth only minutes ago, wrapped around the grip with absolute familiarity. Cold sweat beaded on his forehead, but his hand was steady as stone. "Silas..." he muttered, his smile widening until his cheeks ached. Suddenly, his left shoulder rotated with mechanical precision. Muscle memory surged through his arms like boiling oil. He didn't just know how to hold the bow; he knew the exact weight of the draw, the tension of the string, and the precise angle to combat the crosswind. Pulling the string back, he felt a sharp, stabbing ache in his chest. Memories that did not belong to him flooded his mind. A freezing morning in the ruins of Sector 4. Silas was nine years old, crying because his fingers were bleeding from a snapped bowstring. His father's harsh voice echoed in Atlas's head: "Get up. A weak boy is just food for the night." Tears welled in Atlas's eyes, but they weren't his tears. This was Silas's grief, Silas's desperate struggle to prove his worth in a world that wanted him dead. "Stop it," Atlas hissed through his clenched teeth, his grin twisting into a grotesque mask. He forced himself to laugh, a soft, bubbly sound that felt entirely hollow. If he let the sorrow take root, he would drown in it. Smiling was the only barrier keeping him from dissolving into Silas's dead mind. Locking his gaze onto the hovering scout, he tracked the pulsing red light of its optical sensor. Leathery flesh and rusted machinery fused together to form the scout's hunched body. Release. Twanging sharply, the string propelled the custom blinding bolt through the smoky air. A direct hit. Sparking violently, the scout's optical sensor shattered into a dozen glass shards. Cybernetic fluid mixed with dark, stagnant blood hissed as it leaked from the ruined socket. It thrashed in the dirt, its metallic appendages clawing uselessly at the air before going completely silent. Atlas slumped against the concrete wall, panting heavily. Waves of nausea rolled through his stomach. Who was he? Was he Atlas, the boy who survived by smiling through the dark? Or was he Silas, the boy who died screaming under a pile of rubble? "I am Atlas," he whispered, slapping his own cheeks until they burned red. "I am Atlas, and I am going to save everyone." Forcing his lips upward, he held the cheerful expression until the trembling in his hands stopped. Keeping the mask on was his only salvation. Moving cautiously, he crept toward the fallen scout to retrieve his arrow. Every step felt like walking through deep mud as the lingering weight of Silas's soul clung to his limbs. Before he can retrieve the arrow, his system screen glitters with a crimson notification: 'Hidden Skill: Dead Man's Whisper activated. Silas's ghost demands a tribute.'
