Chapter 1 of 1

Introduction

The apartment smelled like old coffee and ozone. Ethan Bennett sat cross-legged on a worn mattress, laptop burning his thighs through thin pajamas, semester starting in three days but he wasn't thinking about that. He was thinking about a panel. On the screen, some manhwa protagonist stood on top of a shattered tower, blood on a sword too heavy to lift. The art was nice, shadows eating up the whole page, but Ethan didn't care about any of that. He was looking at the rules. 'Why does this system reward isolation?' he thought, scrolling. 'Why do hunters form parties when solo raids are where the real power is? What's the economy here?' He switched tabs to a cultivation manhua, guy on a cliff with robes flapping in the wind and all violent brushstrokes. Ethan scrolled through chapters he'd read twice already, not for the plot but for the power system. He'd always been obsessed with the rules behind these things, the logic, how strength got measured and sorted and turned into hierarchy. He wanted to understand what separated the people who ruled from the people who got ruled over. That's just how he was. Other students talked about grades and parties while Ethan took apart fictional worlds like a surgeon cutting open a corpse, looking for the organs and the mechanics and the hidden rules that made everything work. He didn't read to escape reality, he read because reality was so damn rigid and he wanted to know why. He knew these were just fantasies, he'd consumed enough fiction to know that, but he also knew something else. The world rewarded obedience and routine and being mediocre. Most people would live and die without ever testing what was possible. 3:17 AM. Ethan reached for his coffee but it was empty. He glanced at the reading list on his desk and looked away, feeling nothing. No rebellion and no ambition, just this quiet certainty that he didn't belong here. 'If greatness only exists in fiction,' he thought, 'then fiction's more real than this.' Settling for an ordinary life had always bothered him more than he wanted to admit. If greatness was only in fiction, then reality was the problem, not him. Then the pressure started behind his eyes. Not a headache nor fatigue, something else pressing against the back of his eyes. Something ancient that didn't belong in the human world. It felt like reality itself was forgetting what it was supposed to be. Ethan blinked and the laptop screen blurred, panels bleeding together like watercolors in the rain. He tried to stand but his legs wouldn't move. The pressure got heavier, crushing down until breathing was hard, reminding him of diving too deep and the ocean pressing against his ears and refusing to let him up. Ethan opened his mouth but darkness swallowed the sound before it left his throat. Not the darkness behind closed eyes nor normal room darkness. This was different and older. It felt like it had been there forever, before human eyes even learned to see. The laptop screen went black and the coffee cup rolled off the desk, shattering on the floor. Ethan Bennett wasn't there to hear it.
