Chapter 1: Forbidden Returns

1.4k words

Rain lashed against the grimy glass of my third-floor window, mimicking the dull ache throbbing behind my eyes. Blue light from three monitors bathed the cramped room in a cold, sterile glow. Lines of green code scrolled endlessly down the screens, a digital waterfall that kept me fed but left me entirely hollow. I rubbed my tired eyes, feeling the sharp grit of thirty-six hours without sleep. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, hesitating before I hit the final keystroke to submit the security patch to a minor client. Doing freelance cyber security from a dingy flat in Chicago wasn't the dream, but it kept me off the grid. Safe from the memories I desperately needed to bury, this quiet life was my self-inflicted exile. Suddenly, a sharp vibration rattled the wooden desk, making me jump. A burner phone slid across the dusty surface, its screen lighting up with an unknown number from an area code I knew all too well. New York. Swallowing hard, I stared at the flashing digits, my chest tightening with a sudden, inexplicable dread. Taking a deep breath, I answered on the fourth ring, bracing myself for whatever ghost was calling. "Speak," I muttered, pressing the cold plastic to my ear. "Yuvi?" a polished, professional voice asked, the tone dripping with corporate authority. "Who's asking?" I replied, leaning back in my squeaking leather chair. "My name is Richard Vance, Director of Talent Acquisition at Aegis Cyber Security," the man said. Panic flared in my chest, hot and fast. Aegis was the holy grail of cyber security firms, a multi-billion-dollar fortress in the heart of Manhattan. Working there was a dream for any hacker, but for me, it was a minefield. Josh, my childhood best friend, had been climbing their corporate ladder for the last two years. "How did you get this number?" I asked, my grip tightening on the phone until my plastic casing groaned. "We make it our business to find talent, Mr. Singh, especially talent that prefers to stay hidden," Vance replied, a faint note of amusement in his voice. "Our security analysts have been tracking your freelance work, specifically your elegant solution to the offshore banking breach last month." A long silence stretched between us, heavy and thick with unsaid threats and unspoken promises. "I am not looking for a corporate leash," I said, though my heart hammered violently against my ribs. "We are offering a starting salary of two hundred and fifty thousand, full benefits, and your own specialized division," Vance countered smoothly. "On top of that, we cover absolute relocation costs to Manhattan." Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Cash like that could change everything, pulling me out of this damp hellhole and putting me back in the real world. But returning to New York meant facing Josh. And Josh meant Mia. Just thinking her name sent a jolt of pure heat straight to my gut, followed closely by a cold wash of guilt. She was my best friend's younger sister. Highly off-limits, forbidden, a dangerous obsession I had sworn never to feed again. "Mr. Singh? Are you still there?" Vance's voice broke through my sudden panic. "I'm here," I said, my voice dropping an octave as I forced my racing thoughts to slow down. "Our team needs your decision by tomorrow morning, but we'd prefer to book your flight tonight," Vance pressured gently. Glancing around my miserable apartment, at the peeling wallpaper and the stack of unpaid bills, I knew I had no real choice. "Send me the contract," I muttered. "Excellent. Welcome to Aegis, Yuvraj," Vance said before the line went dead. I stared at the black screen, my mind spinning into a dark, familiar spiral. --- Stepping off the plane at JFK, the humid summer air hit me like a physical blow. Thick humidity, noise, and the scent of exhaust fumes welcomed me back to the city I had fled three years ago. One single duffel bag hung over my shoulder, my life stripped down to the absolute essentials. Walking through the crowded terminal, my phone buzzed in my pocket. A text message from Josh lit up the screen: *'Heard you signed with Aegis! Bro, I can't believe you're back. Let's get a drink tonight.'* My stomach twisted into a tight, uncomfortable knot as I typed a quick reply: *'Just landed. Need to drop my bags at the hotel first.'* His response was almost instantaneous: *'Forget the hotel. Cancel the reservation. You're staying with me.'* People swerved around me with annoyed grunts as I froze in the middle of the terminal. Staying with Josh was a terrible idea. Living under his roof meant being constantly monitored, constantly pretending that I was the same old Yuvi. "No need, man. Aegis is paying for the hotel anyway. Don't want to crowd you," I texted back quickly. My phone rang immediately, Josh's face flashing on the caller ID. Bracing myself, I answered, preparing to fight for my boundaries. "Yuvi, stop being an idiot," Josh's boisterous voice boomed over the line, instantly transporting me back to our college days. "You are my best friend, and you've been MIA for three years. You're not staying in some sterile hotel." "Josh, seriously, I have a lot of work to prep for," I lied, my jaw clenching. "I don't care. I already talked to the Aegis HR rep and told them to cancel the room," Josh said triumphantly. Anger, hot and sudden, flared in my chest, but I forced it down. "You shouldn't have done that," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "Come on, man, don't be like that. My new place in Brooklyn is huge. There's plenty of room," Josh insisted, completely oblivious to my tension. "Besides, someone else is dying to see you." My heart stopped. Breathing became impossible in the crowded terminal. "Who?" I managed to ask, though I already knew the answer. "Maya," Josh said, his voice softening slightly. "She moved in with me last month to start her internship. We're roommates now." Cold sweat broke out across my collarbone. Flashes of her flooded my mind: her dark, mocking eyes, the curve of her neck, the way she used to look at me when Josh wasn't paying attention. She was nineteen now, no longer the teenager I had run away to escape. "I don't think that's a good idea, Josh," I said, my hand trembling slightly against my side. "Don't be a stranger, Yuvi. She's missed you just as much as I have," Josh said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I will text you the address. See you in an hour, brother." His voice cut out, leaving only dead air. Staring at the screen, I felt a deep, primal panic clawing its way up my throat. I was walking straight into a trap of my own making. --- Standing outside the brownstone in Brooklyn, I stared up at the elegant brick facade. Ivy climbed up the walls, clutching the stone like desperate fingers. My grip on the strap of my duffel bag was so hard my knuckles turned white. Turning around and walking back to the airport was a very real temptation. But pride, and something darker—something hungry and obsessive that I hated myself for—kept my feet planted on the concrete. Slowly, I climbed the stone steps and pressed the buzzer. Seconds ticked by like agonizing hours. Then, a heavy wooden door swung open. It wasn't Josh who stood in the doorway. Maya stood there, framing the warm light from the hallway behind her. My breath caught completely. She had grown up. Dark hair fell in soft waves past her shoulders, and her eyes, wide and intense, locked onto mine with a fierce, burning familiarity. An oversized t-shirt hung off one shoulder, exposing her delicate collarbone, and short shorts highlighted her long, sun-kissed legs. "Yuvi," she whispered, her voice a low, sultry purr that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "You actually came back." "Maya," I said, my voice thick and strained. She stepped closer, closing the distance between us until I could smell her perfume—something sweet, like vanilla, mixed with a hint of musk. Her eyes dropped to my lips, lingering there for a fraction of a second before rising back to meet my gaze. "Josh is still at the office. He got held up with a late meeting," she murmured, a slow, wicked smile spreading across her lips. "So, it's just you and me." Cool fingers lightly brushed against my forearm, sending a jolt of pure electricity through my body as she took my hand. "Come inside, Yuvi. Let me show you to your room."
