“Rizka!” Zenkai’s roar was swallowed by the sudden, violent current that arced around her. He reached, fingers outstretched, but the glowing blue light of the terminal, now reflecting off the rising, electrified coolant, painted a scene of impossible danger. The fluid was waist-high, spitting deadly sparks that danced across Rizka’s pale skin, illuminating the exhausted slump of her shoulders. The concussive boom of the doors shutting was still echoing, vibrating through the metal grating beneath her feet. Above them, the chilling, synthesized voice over the comms continued its broadcast, a smug undertone in every digital syllable.
“Clever, Zero. But you won’t be sleeping through *this* solution.”
One particularly nasty spark snapped inches from Rizka’s ear, making her wince. She sighed, a sound of profound irritation rather than fear. “Honestly,” she murmured, her voice barely audible over the crackling and the rising hum of the coolant pump. “Do people not realize how much energy it takes to physically move when you’re already this tired? The sheer inconvenience.” She glanced at the control pedestal, then at the rapidly rising liquid. It would be at her chest in seconds, at the ceiling in less than a minute. Her eyes drifted to the reinforced blast doors, now fully sealed and humming with a locking mechanism designed to withstand orbital bombardment.
Zenkai, soaked to the bone from his lunge, was now scrambling back, desperately searching for any manual override, any vulnerability in the brutalist architecture of the core room. His gaze darted from Rizka to the doors, a frantic fear he rarely showed etched across his refined features. “Rizka, the doors are locked down! And that current…”
“Relax,” she mumbled, her eyes still half-closed. “It’s fine. I’m just trying to remember where I put my favorite hairpin.” She patted the side of her head, then pulled out a delicate, etched metal stylus that looked utterly out of place amidst the high-tech chaos. It was shaped like a sleeping feline, its tiny ears glinting.
Before Zenkai could even process what she was doing, Rizka reached for the massive, impenetrable blast door. The faint blue light from the displays caught the intricate silverwork of the pick as she casually inserted it into a nearly invisible seam where two interlocking plates met. There was a faint *click*, almost imperceptible, followed by a soft, protesting groan from the door’s internal mechanisms. A thin wisp of smoke curled from the insertion point. Then, with a slow, grinding heave, the colossal door began to slide open, revealing the dark corridor beyond. The electrified coolant, now almost at Rizka’s chin, sloshed harmlessly away from the opening.
Zenkai stared, mouth agape. “A… pin? You just… short-circuited a military-grade lockdown with a *hairpin*?”
Rizka yawned, pulling her hand from the door. “My design. The locks are mostly for show. And I needed an easy way in if I ever forgot my keycard.” She was already stepping out of the electrified pool, the liquid dripping from her pajamas with a sound like rain.
No sooner had the door fully retracted than a monstrous, thudding impact vibrated through the entire structure. From the darkness of the corridor, a colossal, multi-limbed mech suit, easily three times Zenkai’s height, burst into the core room. Its heavy, articulated limbs were tipped with glowing, kinetic dampeners and multi-frequency disruptors, clearly designed to nullify pressure points and absorb impact—the precise countermeasures against a grandmaster martial artist. Its optical sensors flared with malevolent red light, focusing immediately on Rizka. An amplified broadcast boomed from its internal speakers, rattling the very floor. “You may have escaped the bath, Zero, but this ‘solution’ cannot be bypassed with a mere tool. This is the ‘Annihilus-Pattern Exoskeleton.’ Custom-built to suppress even your legendary combat style, Grandmaster.”
The mech advanced, each heavy step shaking the room. Zenkai, without a moment’s hesitation, pushed Rizka gently behind him and stepped forward, placing himself squarely between her and the towering threat. His eyes, usually cool and calculating, burned with a fierce, protective fire. “Get back to the server, Rizka. I’ll buy you the time you need.” His stance was firm, his jaw set, ready to face an impossible foe. He knew he stood no chance, but the thought of her being harmed was far more intolerable than his own demise.
Rizka peered around Zenkai’s shoulder, a slow blink the only sign of her reaction. She watched the Annihilus-Pattern Exoskeleton raise a massive, dampening fist, poised to strike. A tiny, almost imperceptible sigh escaped her lips. “You know, it’s really sweet you’re trying to protect me, Zenkai. But this is just… so much effort.” She reached into the pocket of her oversized pajama bottoms and pulled out a sleek, minimalist datapad. Her thumbs, slow and deliberate, moved across the glass surface. Four keystrokes.
K-O-R-I-N.
Then, a long, weary press of the ‘Enter’ icon.
[ANNIHILUS OPERATING SYSTEM: UNEXPECTED SHUTDOWN PROTOCOL INITIATED]
The colossal mech, mid-swing, froze. Its red optical sensors dimmed, then flickered out completely. The humming of its internal power core sputtered, whined, and then died with a pathetic *thunk*. The massive, multi-limbed suit sagged, its joints locking, and then collapsed with a deafening crash onto the core room floor, sending up a cloud of dust and debris. The unseen broadcaster's voice, now small and distorted, screeched from a barely functioning external speaker. “What—?! IMPOSSIBLE! I designed this suit myself! Its machine interface is impenetrable!”
Rizka yawned, her eyes watering slightly from the effort. “Yeah, about that. You built it on Korin’s ‘Omni-Core’ OS, didn’t you? I coded the entire framework for that operating system back when I was bored one Tuesday. Left myself a little back door. Administrator privileges, you know. For maintenance.” She shrugged. “Just sent a shutdown command. Easier than fighting.”
Above them, the digital countdown, flashing aggressively in blood-red, screamed its final moments: *00:00:10.00*.
“Oh, right. The server.” Rizka pushed past Zenkai, who was still staring at the defunct mech with an expression of utter disbelief. She moved to the terminal, its connection port still open. Her fingers, quick but precise despite her apparent exhaustion, re-established the interface. The timer blared, *00:00:05.00*.
She looked at the biometric scanner, then at the timer. “Okay, this is going to sting a bit.” With a decisive motion, she placed her palm onto the scanner, overriding the system’s frantic prompts for Korin’s biometric data. Digital feedback ripped through her wrist, making her teeth grind together. The severing bond fought back, a ghost in the machine, resisting her re-entry. Sweat beaded on her forehead, but her expression remained one of pure, unadulterated annoyance.
*00:00:02.00*
“Come on, you stupid thing,” she muttered, pressing harder, forcing her signature through the resisting firewalls. Her data streamed, a torrent of information fighting against the dying, corrupted protocols. A flash of blinding white light erupted from the interface, accompanied by a high-pitched whine that seemed to tear at the very fabric of the cybernetic web itself.
*00:00:01.00*
Then, silence. The blood-red countdown vanished, replaced by a soothing, emerald green glow across all the arena displays, globally confirming the grid’s stability. The air in the core room suddenly felt lighter, the oppressive hum of impending doom replaced by a gentle, steady thrum of revitalized power. Rizka leaned against the pedestal, exhaling slowly. “Finally. Now I can nap.”
But before she could even consider closing her eyes, the terminal in front of her, now glowing emerald, displayed a new, stark message. In bright, unblinking characters, it read:
[NEURAL GRID STABILITY PROTOCOL: INITIATED]
[BIOMETRIC LOCK: REQUIRED]
[TO PERMANENTLY SEAL GRID INTEGRITY, A LEGALLY BINDING MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE MUST BE UPLOADED TO THE CORE SERVER WITHIN 24 HOURS. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN IRREVERSIBLE, CATASTROPHIC NEURAL-GRID COLLAPSE.]
