Chapter 7 of 10
The One-Kick Wonder

The roar of the crowd was a physical force, pressing against the challenger’s chute as Rizka stepped out. Blinding spotlights hit her, turning her silk pajamas into a shimmering halo and illuminating the soft, plush sleep mask perched on her forehead. She blinked slowly, adjusting to the sudden, overwhelming brightness, her hands tucked casually into her pockets.
“Ladies and gentlemen!” Korin Bael’s voice boomed over the arena’s sonic emitters, laced with a smug, almost manic glee. He stood on his raised dais, bathed in the malevolent red light of his core server, a wide, triumphant grin stretching across his face. “Tonight, we witness the end of the Bael-Ozer feud! My champion will ensure Zenkai Ozer’s humiliating defeat, and then, perhaps, we’ll finally get ‘Zero’ to reveal themselves!”
Beside him, two hulking figures in blood-red armored suits dragged a trembling Jettio closer to the server, his eyes wide with fear, scanning the crowd desperately. His shock-collar glowed a faint, sinister blue. Rizka saw him, and a tiny, almost imperceptible frown touched her lips.
“Behold,” Korin continued, gesturing dramatically to a colossal figure that stomped onto the fighting surface from the opposing chute. The brute was a true behemoth, easily three meters tall, his massive frame a grotesque construct of reinforced muscle and whirring pneumatic parts. Plates of obsidian alloy gleamed where skin should have been, wires snaked beneath his synthetic dermis, and his eyes burned with an unsettling crimson. This was Boros ‘The Anvil’ Klay, a legend in the underground circuits, infamous for unyielding defense and skull-splintering strikes.
“Boros Klay has never lost a match, never yielded a point!” Korin declared, his voice dripping with condescension. “And his opponent? Look closely, Xylos! Zenkai Ozer’s chosen fighter is… a woman! In her nightclothes! Is this a joke? Is this how Ozer intends to concede?!”
Laughter rippled through the upper tiers, mocking hoots washing over Rizka. Korin’s cackle was the loudest, a grating sound that scraped against the edges of her sleep-addled mind. He clutched his stomach, tears of mirth visibly leaking from his eyes. “She’s wearing a sleep mask! Zenkai, are you trying to lull my champion to sleep?!”
Zenkai, standing beside Rizka at the edge of the chute, watched the scene unfold with an impassive stare. A slight tick ticked at his cheek as Korin brayed from the dais. He knew what Rizka was capable of, and the spectacle unfolding was merely the preamble to Korin’s profound regret.
Rizka merely sighed, a soft, almost inaudible sound lost in the cacophony. The sleep mask was a minor inconvenience. She pushed it up onto her forehead, revealing eyes the color of deep night, vacant and flat. Her gaze swept over Boros Klay, a quick, dismissive appraisal. Synthetic nerve trunks, heavy plating, reinforced joints. All designed for maximum impact and endurance.
“The bell for the first round will sound in five seconds!” the arena announcer’s voice crackled, cutting through the laughter. “Fighters, prepare!”
Boros Klay let out a guttural roar, his massive fists clenching, the hydraulic servos in his arms whining. He lumbered towards Rizka, his approach shaking the very ground. Each stomp shook dust from the ceiling rafters. He aimed to end this quickly, with a crushing blow that would splatter his diminutive opponent across the reinforced plasteel floor.
“Five! Four! Three! Two! One!”
The bell blared, a jarring clang that echoed across the vast coliseum. Boros Klay lunged, his right arm transforming into a blur, a piston-driven hammer blow aimed squarely at Rizka’s head. The air shrieked from the force.
But Rizka wasn’t there. She moved with an impossible, almost ethereal grace, a shift so subtle it was barely perceptible. One moment, she was standing casually, the next, she was a whisper of motion, already behind the behemoth. Her silk pajama pant leg fluttered as her right leg shot out, a swift, elegant arc that belied the immense power contained within. It wasn’t a roundhouse, or a grapple, or a joint lock. It was a simple, devastating kick.
The point of impact was Boros Klay’s lower back, precisely where his spine met the primary neural nexus of his cybernetic implants. A dull, sickening *thwump* echoed, strangely quiet amidst the roaring crowd, followed by a sound like a thousand fracturing bones. Boros Klay’s roar died in his throat, replaced by a choked gasp. His colossal body, seemingly invulnerable, stiffened, then launched *forward* with unbelievable velocity.
He didn’t stumble, didn’t fall. He flew. Like a shell fired from a magnetic cannon, the augmented titan shot across the arena, a streak of metal and synthetic muscle. He hit the first towering concrete support pillar with an explosion of dust and pulverized material, splintering it instantly. Without losing momentum, he slammed into the second, which buckled and collapsed with a deafening crash. Then the third, which disintegrated into a shower of debris. Boros Klay’s crushed form finally came to rest embedded in the fourth pillar, a crumpled, unmoving heap of twisted metal and inert flesh.
The arena went deathly quiet. The roaring crowd, the smug Korin, the trembling Jettio – all were stunned into absolute stillness. The dust settled slowly, revealing the path of destruction, three colossal pillars reduced to rubble, and the undefeated Boros Klay, out cold, his internal systems audibly failing.
“Klay… is down!” the announcer stammered, his voice laced with disbelief. “Referee, confirm! Is he… is he out?!”
A tiny, wiry referee, who had been scrambling to avoid the flying debris, rushed over, poked Klay’s unmoving form, then threw his hands into the air, a frantic, almost religious gesture. “He’s out! He’s out cold! Winner! The challenger, Zenkai Ozer’s fighter, is the winner!”
More silence. Then, a collective gasp swept through the coliseum. A new message flashed across the gigantic holographic displays that ringed the arena:
[NEW GAUNTLET RECORD: FASTEST KNOCKOUT!]
[TIME: 0.87 SECONDS!]
Korin Bael, still on his dais, turned the sickly grey of wet concrete. His triumphant grin had frozen into a rictus of sheer, unadulterated horror. His stare locked onto the small, pajama-clad figure in the center of the arena. Rizka. His lazy, useless, trophy wife. The woman he’d publicly shamed, cast aside, and thought completely inconsequential. Her identity, the legend of the Voraxian Gauntlet’s undefeated Grandmaster, solidified in his mind with a sickening thud.
“No… no, it can’t be…” he whispered, his voice a ragged croak. “*Her*? The Grandmaster? The one I’ve been hunting? It was *her* all along?!”
Rizka merely stifled a yawn, stretched her arms above her head, and pulled her sleep mask back down over her eyes. She started to amble towards Jettio, completely ignoring the stunned silence, the cracked pillars, and the defeated fighter. Her goal was clear: retrieve Jettio, re-sync the server, and find a quiet place for a nap.
But then, the arena’s massive holographic displays, which had just celebrated Rizka’s victory, flickered. The familiar 60-day countdown, previously blood-red, now pulsed with an angry, violent violet. A new, synthesized voice, colder and more menacing than the announcer’s, echoed through the stunned coliseum, overriding all other sound.
“Attention, denizens of Xylos. Due to unforeseen complications… and frankly, to expedite the inevitable… the neural-grid collapse countdown has been artificially accelerated.” The violet countdown on the displays changed, drastically. Not 60 days. Not 60 hours. A stark, chilling number pulsed into existence.
“You now have less than 60 minutes before every brain connected to the net fries.”
