“Behold! The new era begins!” Elder Enkhtur’s voice ripped through the air, vibrating the very stones of the arena. The obsidian blade, razor-sharp, glinted under the harsh sun, then swept down not to Zhalia, but to a small, ornate pedestal beside them. On it rested two chalices, crafted from dark, polished bone, filled with a viscous, shimmering ruby draught.
“My children,” Enkhtur intoned, his gaze sweeping over the silent, expectant thousands, “the spirits have spoken! The path to true strength, to the purity of the Targatai bloodline, is through the sacred bond! A bond forged not by mere chance, but by divine purpose! A purpose we honor today as we bind Zhalia and Batzorig, the White Wolf and the Mountain Alpha, into an unbreakable union!”
He seized one vessel, its contents sloshing, and presented it to Batzorig. The retainers holding Batzorig tightened their grips, pushing his head forward. Batzorig fought them, a low, guttural snarl tearing from his throat, his powerful frame straining against their collective strength. His eyes, fixed on the elder, burned with a hatred so potent it seemed to warp the air around him. The dark syrup trembled in the cup, mirroring his rage.
“Drink, Alpha,” Enkhtur commanded, his voice laced with an artificial warmth that made Zhalia’s stomach churn. “Accept your destiny. Accept your mate.”
Batzorig thrashed harder, a defiant roar erupting as he spat at the elder’s feet. A ripple of gasps went through the crowd. Enkhtur’s smile faltered, a fleeting crack in his carefully constructed facade. His knuckles whitened around the bone rim. “Insolent pup,” he hissed, barely audible over the crowd’s murmuring, before recovering his composure. He jammed the rim against Batzorig’s lips, forcing it against his gritted teeth.
Zhalia watched, utterly uninvested. She noted the cheap dramatics of the 'sacred' drink, the transparent manipulation in Enkhtur’s voice. It was all so predictable, so very *Alpha*. He was putting on a show, but the audience was about to get a different kind of spectacle.
Enkhtur turned to her then, the second chalice extended. “And you, Zhalia. The White Wolf, returned from myth! Your power is immense, but untamed. Unbound. Drink, and let your spirit be guided, your strength amplified by the one chosen for you!” He beamed, a terrifyingly benevolent expression, as he pushed the goblet towards her mouth. “Yield to your fate! Yield to your Alpha!”
Zhalia felt the retainers’ hands release her, a subtle pressure urging her to take the cup. She looked at the gleaming scarlet draught, then at Enkhtur’s eager, calculating eyes. His expensive, hand-tooled leather boots, polished to a high sheen, caught her attention just below the hem of his ceremonial robes. They looked rather vulnerable.
She took the vessel.
A collective sigh of relief, or perhaps triumph, swept through the arena. Enkhtur’s smile widened, a predatory flash. He leaned in, conspiratorial, “Good girl. The spirits will bless you.”
Zhalia didn’t respond. With a fluid, almost lazy motion, she tilted the vessel. Not to her lips, but down. A thick scarlet arc splattered across Enkhtur’s gleaming right boot, staining the polished leather an oily red. A few drops even found their way onto his pristine white ceremonial robes.
The arena went silent. A single, audible gasp from the crowd, then nothing.
Enkhtur froze, his triumphant smile dissolving into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. He stared at his ruined boot, then slowly, stiffly, raised his gaze to Zhalia. Veins stood out stark against his temples. “You… insolent… WRETCH!” he roared, his voice no longer amplified, but raw, thick with rage.
He lunged, not for a weapon, but to a hidden satchel at his waist, ripping it open. Inside, dozens of small, glowing vials clinked together. Zhalia caught a glimpse of the same synthetic serum she’d seen in her vision. He snatched three, perhaps four, vials, tearing off their caps with his teeth, and plunged them, one after another, into his own neck.
A shriek of pure, agonizing power tore from Enkhtur’s throat. His body seized, contorted. The ceremonial robes ripped as his muscles bulged, skin stretching, cracking. Dark, coarse fur erupted from his pores, covering his face, his hands, his entire frame. His bones groaned, popping, reshaping. His jaw elongated, teeth sharpening into dagger-like fangs. His eyes, once shrewd and calculating, became twin pools of molten gold, devoid of humanity.
The transformation was horrific, a grotesque mockery of a wolf-spirit manifestation. The crowd screamed, not in reverence, but in abject terror. They scrambled, tripping over each other, a panicked mass stampeding for the exits. The carefully constructed lie, the facade of spiritual leadership, shattered into a million pieces before their eyes.
Enkhtur, no longer human, but a hulking, monstrous abomination of muscle and rage, let out a piercing, unearthly howl. His head snapped towards Zhalia, his glowing eyes burning with an infernal light. He was pure, unbridled malice, his form a twisted monument to the stolen, corrupted magic he had so greedily consumed.
He launched himself. Not a run, but a blur of motion, a terrifying, predatory lunge that covered the distance between them in an instant. Claws, long and black as obsidian, extended from massive paws, aimed directly for Zhalia’s chest, intent on tearing her in half. The air shrieked with the force of his attack.
Before Zhalia could even register the threat, a blur of his own, Batzorig, freed somehow from the petrified retainers, moved. He threw himself in front of her, his body a shield, his growl a desperate challenge. The monstrous claws, meant for Zhalia, slammed into Batzorig’s chest with a sickening, wet thud that echoed through the emptying arena.
Batzorig’s eyes, wide with shock and pain, met Zhalia’s for a fleeting moment. Blood sprayed from his chest as he was flung backward, limbs slack, landing hard against the flagstones.
He lay there, still. Motionless.
