Chapter 1 of 11
The Weight of a Shadow

The afternoon sun filtered through the dusty windows of the old library annex, casting long, amber slants across the worn wooden tables. It was a space nobody really used anymore, which made it the perfect sanctuary for them.
Bomi leaned back in her chair, her eyes crinkling as she watched Tani painstakingly organize his colored pencils by the exact gradient of the rainbow. He was so meticulous, so entirely wrapped up in his own quiet world. With his oversized pastel sweater and the soft tufts of dark hair that constantly fell into his eyes, he looked like the human embodiment of a gentle breeze.
"Tani-ah," Bomi called out softly, a playful grin tugging at the corners of her lips.
Tani blinked, tilting his head. His wide, innocent eyes locked onto hers, completely devoid of any malice or hidden pretense. "Hmm? Did I miss a color, Bomi?"
"No, silly." Bomi leaned forward, stretching her arm across the small table. Her fingers found their way into his hair, gently tousling the soft strands. It was a habit as old as their friendship. She loved the texture of it, loved how he would lean into her touch like a content puppy. "Your hair is getting long again. It’s cute, but it’s blocking your view."
A faint, rosy blush dusted Tani’s cheeks, and he gave her a shy, genuine smile that reached his eyes. "I like it when you fix it," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
To Tani, Bomi was his anchor. She was the bright, energetic force that shielded him from a world that often felt too loud and overwhelming. He adored her care, her constant presence by his side. But if anyone were to ask Tani if he ever thought of Bomi as a woman—as a romantic interest—he would have looked at them with utter confusion. Romance was a foreign country he had no map for; Bomi was simply Bomi, his indispensable best friend.
Bomi, for her part, harbored her own quiet thoughts, but she kept them safely tucked away. She knew Tani's wavelength. He was pure, untouched by the heavier, darker desires of teenage life. She contented herself with being the one who protected his innocence.

Later that evening, the sky turned a bruised purple. They were walking back to their neighborhood, a familiar route they had taken thousands of times since they were kids.
"Remember when we were eight?" Bomi asked, swinging her tote bag. "You cried because you thought a caterpillar was lonely, so we stayed out until dark looking for its family."
Tani let out a soft, embarrassed chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "You stayed with me the whole time. Your mom scolded you because we missed dinner."
"Hey, what are best friends for?" Bomi laughed, stepping closer to him.
But as they crossed the narrow alleyway leading to their street, the atmosphere shifted. A group of older boys from the neighboring school were loitering by the convenience store. They were loud, smelling of cheap cigarettes and restless adrenaline.
As Bomi and Tani tried to pass by quietly, one of the boys stepped into their path, his eyes raking over Bomi’s form. The light summer uniform did little to hide the soft, prominent curves of her chest—a contrast to her bright, girlish demeanor that often drew unwanted attention.
"Hey, look at this," the guy sneered, nudging his friend. "Where are you going in such a hurry, pretty girl? And who's the charity case you're dragging along?"
Tani instantly froze. His breath hitched, his shoulders tensing as he instinctively shrunk back, his natural timidity taking over. He hated confrontation. It terrified him.
Bomi immediately stepped in front of him, her playful attitude vanishing, replaced by a fierce, protective glare. "Move out of the way. We don't have time for this."
"Oh, she’s got a mouth on her," another boy laughed, stepping closer, his hand reaching out aggressively toward Bomi's shoulder.
---
Something inside Tani’s chest cracked.
It wasn't just fear. It was a violent, suffocating pressure that had been building in the deepest, darkest recesses of his mind for seventeen years. Deep within his subconscious, a presence that had been locked in a cage of flesh and bone—a twin brother absorbed before birth, deprived of a body, deprived of a life, but forced to watch every single one of Tani’s memories—suddenly slammed against the bars.
*He’s too weak,* a voice hissed inside the dark void of Tani's mind. *He can't protect her. He doesn't even know what to do with her.*
The physical stress of the confrontation, the threat to Bomi, and the sheer surge of adrenaline acted as the ultimate trigger. The barrier broke.
Tani’s head dropped. His breathing stopped entirely for a agonizing three seconds.
"Tani?" Bomi asked, sensing the sudden, unnatural stillness behind her.
When Tani raised his head, the boy reaching for Bomi froze.
The innocence was gone. The shy, soft slouch vanished, replaced by a rigid, towering posture that radiated sheer, unadulterated malice. The eyes that were once wide and gentle were now narrowed, dark, and burning with a terrifying, predatory intensity. A slow, wicked smirk spread across his lips—a expression the real Tani was utterly incapable of making.
The hidden persona, **Kage**, had finally taken the wheel.
Kage didn't hesitate. Before the older boy could even register the shift, Kage reached out, gripping the boy's wrist with a sickening, crushing force. A low, raspy groan escaped the bully's lips as Kage twisted his arm behind his back, forcing him to his knees with effortless, brutal precision.
"You touch her," Kage whispered, his voice dropping an octave, sounding completely different—hot, dangerous, and dripping with venom, "and I’ll make sure you never use this hand again."
The other boys, terrified by the sudden, demonic shift in the boy they thought was a pushover, grabbed their groaning friend and scrambled backward, fleeing down the alley.
---
Silence fell over the alleyway. Bomi stood rooted to the spot, her heart hammering against her ribs. She stared at her childhood friend, but every instinct in her body screamed that the person standing in front of her was a complete stranger.
"T-Tani?" Bomi stammered, her voice trembling. "Are you okay? Where did you learn to do that?"
Kage slowly turned his gaze toward her. He didn't look at her face. His eyes immediately dropped lower, locking onto her chest, staring intensely at her supple, heavy breasts beneath the thin fabric of her shirt. His gaze was ravenous, heavy with a twisted, obsessive hunger that had been festering for years while trapped inside Tani's mind.
He took a step toward her, the air between them turning thick and suffocatingly hot.
"Tani?" Bomi backed up a step, her back hitting the brick wall of the alley. She felt a sudden, bizarre thought cross her mind—*Is he possessed? Did a succubus or some demon take over his body?* This couldn't be her sweet Tani.
Kage closed the distance, pinning her against the wall. He reached up, his large hand wrapping around the back of her neck, his thumb caressing her jawline with a possessive, heavy pressure. He leaned down, his breath hot against her ear.
"I've been waiting so long, Bomi," Kage murmured, his voice sending a violent shiver down her spine. "He doesn't know what to do with you. But I do."
