Chapter 1: Awakening in Neon Rain

2.2k words

Cold rain pelted Arkha’s face, smelling of copper and burnt plastic. Each drop felt like a tiny needle piercing his skin, dragging him back from a deep, suffocating darkness. Groaning, he dragged his cheek off the wet asphalt. His fingers twitched, brushing against grimy puddles that reflected the harsh, artificial glow of the city above. Pain spiked behind his temples, a sharp, white-hot needle that made him gasp and curl into a tight ball. His mind felt like a shattered hard drive, spinning uselessly as he tried to piece together who he was or how he had ended up in this filthy, narrow alleyway. Where was he? Towering walls of rusted metal and concrete pressed in from both sides, stretching up so high they choked out the night sky. Up there, in the hazy distance, massive holographic advertisements flickered through the smog, showcasing sleek, golden figures performing fluid martial arts movements. Pink and green neon light flickered from broken signs nearby, casting long, greasy reflections across the accumulated garbage. Stale clove cigarettes and ozone hung heavy in the damp air, thick enough to coat the back of his throat. Memory was a shattered mirror inside his head, sharp and painful to touch. Pieces of a name floated in the dark—*Arkha Samudra*—but everything else was gone, washed away by the relentless downpour. He knew his name, and he knew he didn't belong in a place this cold, this hard. Shivering, he pushed himself up onto his hands and knees. His limbs felt incredibly weak, like hollow reeds swaying in a storm, completely devoid of the strength needed to survive in a place like this. Sharp pain stung his palms as they pressed against jagged gravel and discarded circuit boards. Warm water pooling around his knees was heated by the thermal vents of some massive machine humming deep beneath the city streets. Vibrating deeply, a low hum rattled his teeth. It wasn't just the vents; it was the sound of violence. Screams echoed from the mouth of the alley, sharp and filled with a desperate, raw terror that made his stomach twist. Sharp sounds of metal clashing and high-frequency hums filled the air, bouncing off the narrow walls. "Get back! He's got a kinetic rig!" a voice yelled, choked with panic. Sparks flared around the corner, illuminating the rain in brief, violent flashes of electric blue. Vivid light reflected off the damp brick walls, making the shadows look like reaching, clawed hands. Arkha squeezed his eyes shut, pressing his back against a dripping dumpster. His chest heaved as he tried to draw in shallow breaths, terrified that even the sound of his breathing might draw attention. Violence was something he instinctively loathed, a heavy weight that pressed down on his chest and made it hard to breathe. Even without his memories, he knew he hated this. The thought of physical conflict made his stomach turn, a physical reaction of disgust and terror. Fighting, hurting, bleeding—it all felt monstrously wrong, an aberration of human nature that he wanted no part of. He was a gentle soul, built for quiet libraries or peaceful gardens, not the blood-slicked alleys of this neon nightmare. Footsteps splashed through the puddles, drawing closer with terrifying speed. Two figures tumbled into the alleyway, locked in a brutal struggle that looked more like a mutual slaughter than a fight. They slammed against the opposite wall, shaking loose a shower of rust and dried mortar. One wore a leather jacket torn at the shoulder, revealing a metal port embedded in his collarbone that glowed with a sick green light. The skin around the metal was red and inflamed, showing signs of cheap, black-market cybernetics. Opposing him was a man in matching gray fatigues, holding a short iron rod that hummed with crackling yellow energy. His eyes were wide with a frantic, feral desperation, his teeth bared in a snarl. Spirit-Tech. Arkha didn't know how he knew the word, but it surfaced instantly, heavy with a sense of dread. It was a corruption of ancient spiritual energy, forced into metallic vessels and wire pathways to serve as weapons of destruction. "Die, corporate dog!" the man in leather hissed, his glowing port pulsing faster as he drove his elbow into the other man's ribs. Green light surged down his arm, forming a jagged blade of pure, unstable energy that hissed against the falling rain. The heat radiating from the blade was so intense it turned the falling droplets into tiny puffs of steam. He swung wildly, aiming for his opponent's throat with a viciousness that made Arkha’s blood run cold. Fear locked Arkha in place as he watched the glowing blade slice through the air. The sheer malice radiating from the two fighters felt like a physical weight, pressing down on his shoulders and keeping him pinned to the wet ground. Every instinct screamed at him to run, to find a dark corner and hide until the world became quiet again. But his legs felt like lead, stuck in the mud of his own panic. Missed swings struck the brick wall just inches from Arkha's head, exploding in a shower of red-hot sparks and pulverized clay. The blast wave knocked him sideways, his shoulder slamming into the damp pavement. Heat singed his hair, leaving behind the acrid smell of burnt protein. Gasping, Arkha scrambled backward on his hands and feet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He pressed himself into the deepest shadow he could find, his eyes wide and glassy with terror. "Please," he whispered, his voice cracking, though neither of the fighters heard him over the roar of the rain and the crackle of their weapons. "Stop..." Brutal blows traded back and forth, each impact sending ripples of kinetic force through the humid air. The man in gray fatigues swung his iron rod, connecting with the other's jaw with a sickening crunch. Blood splattered across the wet asphalt, dark and steaming under the neon glow. It mixed with the greasy water, spreading out in a dark halo that reached toward Arkha's boots. Arkha felt physically ill, a wave of nausea rising in his throat. The sound of breaking bone and the smell of hot blood made him want to claw his way through the solid brick wall behind him. Why did they have to hurt each other? Why was the world so eager to tear itself apart? What purpose did this suffering serve, other than to breed more pain and hatred? He closed his eyes, but the wet, heavy sounds of the fight still filled his head, painting vivid pictures of the violence in his mind. Crouching low, he tried to slide along the wet brick wall, hoping to slip past them unnoticed while they were distracted by their mutual hatred. His movements were clumsy, his limbs shaking so violently he could barely maintain his balance. Dirt and grease smeared across his clothes as he moved, his eyes wide and fixed on the combatants. Every splash of water felt like a siren, signaling his presence to the monsters fighting just feet away. Suddenly, the man in gray fatigues lost his footing on a patch of slick garbage. He went down hard, his iron rod clattering out of his hand and rolling into a puddle. Seizing the opportunity, the leather-jacketed thug raised his glowing green blade for a lethal downward strike. The look of triumph on his face was sadistic, his eyes gleaming with the anticipation of the kill. "No!" Arkha cried out, his body moving on pure, reckless empathy before his analytical mind could stop him. He couldn't just stand by and watch a man get executed in front of him, no matter how terrified he was. He grabbed a heavy metal pipe lying in the mud and threw it with all the meager strength he could muster. Clattering loudly, the pipe bounced off the thug’s shoulder, throwing off his balance just as he began his strike. It didn't hurt him, but it distracted him just enough to ruin his aim. Unstable green energy sliced harmlessly into the ground, vaporizing a puddle with a loud pop and a thick cloud of steam. Both fighters froze, turning their heads slowly to stare at Arkha. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of falling rain and the erratic breathing of the three men. Sweat mixed with rain on Arkha's forehead as he realized what he had done. He had drawn the monster's attention to himself, and now there was nowhere left to hide. "Who the hell are you?" the thug in leather growled, his eyes narrowing as he stepped toward Arkha, his glowing green blade humming with renewed energy. "A witness?" Panic, cold and absolute, seized Arkha’s limbs, freezing him to the spot. His mind raced, analyzing every possible escape route, but every path was blocked by the two aggressive men. He backed up until his spine hit a solid iron gate, trapping him in the dead end of the alley. The cold metal offered no comfort, only the harsh reality of his confinement. "I... I didn't mean to," Arkha stammered, raising his hands in a gesture of surrender, his palms facing outward to show he had no weapons. "Please, just stop fighting. Nobody has to die here." Laughter, harsh and mocking, escaped the thug’s lips as he raised his glowing hand again. The green light illuminated his scarred face, highlighting the cruelty etched into every line. "A pacifist in Neo-Jakarta," the thug sneered, taking another step forward, his boots splashing heavily in the puddles. "That’s a death sentence, kid. Let me help you carry it out." Before the thug could strike, a heavy, metallic thud echoed from the rooftops above, shaking the very foundations of the alleyway. Torrential rain parted as a figure descended from the sky, landing with a bone-jarring impact that cracked the asphalt. A shockwave of air blew outward, scattering the loose garbage and forcing Arkha to shield his eyes. Steam hissed from hydraulic joints in the figure's armored boots, rising in white plumes around his legs. Clad in sleek, obsidian-black plates with gold filigree, the newcomer wore a terrifying mask resembling a stylized tiger. The mask's eyes glowed with a cold, piercing crimson light that seemed to cut through the darkness. Sultanate authority radiated from his very stance. This was an enforcer of the Iron Sultanate, the law of the land, cold and absolute. Dread washed over both street fighters instantly, their previous anger evaporating into a cold, paralyzing terror. They both took a step back, their weapons lowering slightly as they stared at the armored giant. "Unsanctioned use of Spirit-Tech in a restricted sector," a cold, synthesized voice boomed from behind the tiger mask. The voice was devoid of any human emotion, sounding like metal grinding against metal. "Submitting to pacification is your only option. Resistance will result in immediate termination." Without waiting for a response, the enforcer moved with blinding speed, his heavy armor doing nothing to slow his movements. Brutal metal gauntlets struck the thug in the leather jacket, sending him crashing into the brick wall with enough force to shatter the masonry. The impact was loud, a dull thud followed by the sound of crumbling brick. He slumped down, unconscious or worse, the green light on his collarbone flickering out like a dying ember. Desperately, the other fighter tried to run, scrambling backward in a desperate attempt to reach the mouth of the alley. Flicking a wrist, the enforcer sent a long, glowing wire weapon spinning through the air. The wire wrapped around the fleeing man's ankles, tightening with a sharp crack of energy that sent him face-first into the dirty water, convulsing as currents of electricity surged through his body. Arkha pressed himself so hard against the iron gate he felt the rusted bars biting through his thin shirt. He wanted to disappear, to melt into the shadows and escape the brutal efficiency of this technological monster. His breath hitched as the enforcer turned those lifeless, glowing visor eyes toward him, the crimson light reflecting off the wet ground. "Witness identified," the enforcer's synthesized voice droned, stepping over the fallen bodies with slow, deliberate steps. "Unregistered citizen. Commencing elimination of loose ends." Fear threatened to swallow Arkha whole, a dark tide that drowned out every rational thought. His body trembled so violently he could barely stand, his knees buckling under the weight of his own helplessness. He wanted to run, to scream, to beg for mercy, but his voice was trapped in his throat, choked by the sheer terror of his impending death. Under the oppressive weight of the enforcer's gaze, he felt completely and utterly powerless, a lamb waiting for the slaughter in a world that had no room for gentle souls. As a masked enforcer's energy-whip crackled towards him, Arkha felt a sudden, impossible surge of information, an ethereal voice whispering, "Target acquired. Martial Art System initiated..."
