Chapter 10 of 10

Analog Shadows, Digital Keys

A guttural roar ripped through the banquet hall, not of anger, but of sheer terror. Low-voltage amber lamps cast distorted silhouettes across the assembled elite, their features contorted into masks of dread. A woman in shimmering silk shrieked, clutching a comm-link that now merely blinked a dull red error. “My vaults! My balances are frozen!” Another voice stammered, “The Spire is sealed! I can’t open my suite door!” Panic tore through the formerly pristine hall, each frantic cry bouncing off dead crystal chandeliers. Luzia, still slick with massage oil and standing amidst the ruined DJ booth, stared out at the chaos, her face a mask of disbelief rapidly morphing into livid fury. Her smart-pistol, a melted sculpture of useless alloy, lay on the floor. Her eyes, wide with frustrated rage, locked onto Savya. Savya plucked a data-shard from her wrist-cuff, the same device that had been tethered to Luzia’s trigger. With a flick of her thumb, she patched it into the dormant auxiliary projection system. The vast wall panels that had mirrored the glittering cityscape now whirred to life, not with feeds, but with stark, terminal-style schematics. “Attention, esteemed members of the Cortazar Directorate,” Savya’s voice, piped through the auxiliary PA, sliced through the rising clamor. “It seems your biometric privileges have hit a minor snag.” She gestured toward the glass panes. “Behold the original intrusion scripts designed by our very own golden child, Luzia Cortazar, intended to blackout the lower city and frame me for cyber-terrorism. Quite the welcome gift, wouldn’t you agree?” Across the glass, lines of code scrolled beneath bright crimson warnings: `PROTOCOL_SAN_DURA_EXTERMINATION`, `BIO_ID_SAVYA_CORTAZAR_FRAMEWORK`, `ASSET_ERASURE_COMPLETE`. Shouts of disgust rippled among the trapped board members as they watched their supposed savior laid bare as a saboteur. Luzia surged forward, a feral snarl twisting her features. “You conniving slum-rat! This is a fabrication!” Savya raised an eyebrow. “Then perhaps you’d like to explain these packet captures, darling sister.” The projection shifted to encrypted comm-logs between Luzia and offshore shell addresses, detailing payload routes and the timing of the grid collapse. The archive, permanent now that Savya had cordoned the mainframe, offered no escape. Then the monitors pivoted again, playing Elder Canto’s serene voice over a packet capture detailing the seizure of syndicate funds: `INITIATE_SYNDICATE_LEDGER_EXTRACTION`, `COORDINATE_TEMPLE_SACRIFICE_PROTOCOL`, `REDISTRIBUTE_FUNDS_CANTO_ASSETS`. The temple patriarch, who had staged her condemnation, loomed twenty feet tall in the projection, exposed in cold hex-dumps. “And for those who wondered about the ‘true heir’ stunt,” Savya added, “dear Elder Canto was skimming syndicate reserves all along. He was ready to poison the lower wards with scrubbed ozone for extra capital. But why stop there?” She turned toward the head of the house, who stood frozen with a champagne glass in hand. “You know, patriarch, this heiress gig is exhausting. And Spire humidity ruins my curls.” Savya reached into her pocket and pulled out the Cortazar biometric ring, its engraved platinum glinting under the amber strips. She dropped it with a sharp *ping* into his untouched flute. A solitary carbonation bubble drifted upward. “Consider that my official resignation,” she announced. “This crown, this Spire, this… *system*… it’s all yours. Enjoy being trapped inside.” The reinforced entry bulkhead shuddered as sirens screamed up the elevator shafts. Red and blue beacons flashed past the outer glass, signaling tactical units responding to the network failure. Luzia bolted for the service corridor, but found the mag-latches dead. Trapped in her own enclosure. Savya did not wait for the bulkhead to buckle. While the guests stared at the monitors, she drew a coiled braided-carbon line from her left gauntlet—anchored to a ceiling joist hours ago while disguised as service staff. The tiny magnetic grapple engaged with a dull snap against the steel flange. Savya sprinted toward the nearest exterior window, ignoring the shrieks behind her. She reset her grip on the tether and drove both steel-capped boots into the pane's stress fracture. Tempered glass exploded into the abyss. Freezing high-altitude wind slammed through the salon. Savya tossed a mock salute toward Luzia and the blank-faced patriarch. “Enjoy the penthouse view!” With a sharp yell, she kicked off the ledge. The friction spool hummed as she dropped into the dark gulf of Xantheo. The slipstream whistled past her goggles. She metered the brake, skimming thirty stories of darkened balconies and dead security turrets, dropping fast through the cloud shelf. Her boots slammed onto cracked alley asphalt, reeking of fryer grease and synthetic cloves. She severed the line, reeled the spool, and glanced upward. The Cortazar Spire loomed overhead like a dead monolith against bruised violet clouds. The master keys had been scrambled forever. Savya checked the handheld terminal in her palm. Green phosphor illuminated the readout: `CORTAZAR_HOLDINGS_UNLOCKED: 98,743,561,002 CREDITS`. The entire treasury of the clan, captured and rerouted away from the cloudline. Kynan stepped out of a recessed doorway, chewing a clove tooth-pick. “Look at that. You bagged bigger prey than sensor taps.” Savya tucked the drive into her vest. “Let’s just say I emptied the casino vault. Time to wire the slums, Kynan.” High above, a lonely crimson fault code blinked across the dead Spire.
