Chapter 6: Lies Drifting in Blue

1.7k words

Cold, minty liquid dripped from the tip of Autumn’s nose. It pooled in her collarbone, turning her white scrub top a violent, neon shade of electric blue. Her eyelashes were glued together with sticky, high-fructose wintergreen residue. Every breath she took tasted like she had swallowed a peppermint-flavored hand grenade. Ethan blinked, wiping a stray splatter of Listerine-scented liquid from his cheek. His jaw hung open, his eyes darting from Autumn's soaked hair to the massive, bristles-shaped silhouette still looming behind the frosted glass of her bathroom window. The shadow was unmistakably five feet tall, thick-waisted, and crowned with a spikey head of hair. "Autumn?" Ethan’s voice squeaked, a rare departure from his usual smooth, baritone self. "What... what was that? Did your water heater just sneeze mouthwash?" Shivering violently, Autumn tried to smile. Her teeth chattered, a rapid-fire clicking sound that echoed in the quiet hallway of her apartment building. She pressed her back against the bathroom door, hoping her body could somehow act as a human shield against the cosmic absurdity waiting on the other side. "Perfectly normal," she choked out, her voice tight. "Just... standard maintenance. Upgrades. You know how landlord-tenant agreements are." Ethan pointed a trembling finger toward the window. "There is a giant, glowing blue shadow in there. It looks like... a brush. A five-foot-tall brush. And it’s moving." Panic, cold and sharp, pierced through Autumn’s chest. Her carefully structured life was a house of cards, and Jumbo was a leaf-blower. If Ethan walked into that bathroom, he would see the impossible, and she would be hauled off to a psych ward before her midterms. Her mother’s voice echoed in her head—*you always lose control when things get messy, Autumn.* She had spent three years building a reputation as the most disciplined, logical student in the dental hygiene program. She color-coded her highlighters. She planned her meals three months in advance. She was not going to let an oversized dental tool destroy her future. Thinking quickly was never her strong suit; she preferred planning three weeks in advance. But desperation is a powerful motivator. Her brain scrambled, cataloging dental terminology, thesis requirements, and emergency defense mechanisms. "It's a prototype!" she blurted out, her voice rising an octave. Ethan frowned, stepping back slightly as a glob of blue foam slid off Autumn's shoulder and landed with a wet *splat* on his clean white sneaker. "A prototype?" "Yes," Autumn lied, her brain scrambling to piece together a plausible cover story using every academic buzzword she had memorized. "For my honors thesis. I’m studying advanced delivery systems. It’s an experimental, aerosolized dental-hygiene defense spray." "A defense spray?" Ethan repeated, looking at her as if she had suggested brushing with battery acid. "Exactly," Autumn said, nodding so vigorously her wet ponytail whipped her in the face. "Think about it. Public health is in crisis. People don't floss. They don't brush for the full two minutes. So, I conceived a localized, pressurized, high-velocity distribution system. It sanitizes an entire room instantly. It's... it's a preemptive strike against periodontal disease." Ethan stared at her. He looked at the blue puddle spreading across the floorboards. He looked at her blue-stained skin, which was rapidly drying into a sticky, matte finish. "By blasting you in the face?" he asked. "Targeted exposure therapy," Autumn claimed, crossing her arms to hide her trembling hands. "I have to test the efficacy of the aerosolized particles in a controlled domestic environment. The giant shadow is just... a specialized, ergonomic dispersal mannequin. To simulate a human jawline. In a highly magnified scale. For fluid dynamics." Silence stretched between them, thick and smelling heavily of artificial wintergreen. Ethan rubbed the back of his neck. He looked incredibly skeptical, his brow furrowing as he tried to process her rapid-fire explanation. Yet, knowing Autumn’s absolute, borderline-obsessive dedication to her dental hygiene studies, a small part of him seemed to buy it. She was, after all, the girl who carried three different types of floss in her purse. "Well," Ethan said slowly, a faint, impressed smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I knew you were dedicated, Autumn. But building a weaponized mouthwash cannon in your bathroom for a thesis? That is... intense. Even for you. I didn't think the department allowed experimental chemical engineering." "They don't... I mean, they do, under strict supervision," she muttered, her eyes darting to the floor. Beneath her shivering exterior, a crushing wave of guilt washed over her. She had lied to Ethan. She had fabricated an entire scientific breakthrough just to hide a giant, sentient piece of plastic. Worse, she had lied about her academic research. If her department head ever found out she was claiming a sentient, chaotic blue entity was an 'experimental aerosolized defense spray,' her career would be over before it started. Her academic reputation hung by a single, fragile thread. "You should probably dry off," Ethan said, gesturing to her dripping scrubs. "And maybe turn off the... mannequin? Before it bleaches your tiles." "Right. Yes. Let me just go... disarm it," Autumn said, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. --- Sneaking into the bathroom, Autumn closed the door firmly behind her. Jumbo was gone. Only a dripping trail of blue slime remained, leading directly toward the small bathroom window that opened out to the fire escape. The glass was pushed up, a cool breeze blowing through the room. "Oh, no," Autumn whispered, her stomach dropping into her shoes. Peering out the window, she scanned the alleyway. The neighborhood was quiet, but a sudden clatter of garbage cans three doors down suggested otherwise. A faint, glowing blue light pulsed behind a green dumpster. Jumbo was on the loose in the wild. Wiping her face with a towel, she rushed back to the living room where Ethan was waiting, trying to look as nonchalant as possible. "All disarmed," Autumn lied again, her voice tight and high-pitched. "But I actually need to run down to the courtyard. To... check the external sensors. For the thesis. Calibration is very time-sensitive." Ethan stood up, adjusting his jacket. "Can I help? I’d love to see how the sensors work. It sounds pretty high-tech." "No!" Autumn gasped, perhaps a bit too quickly. "It's... highly toxic to untrained respiratory systems. The residue can cause temporary tongue numbness. Just wait here. I'll be right back. Do not touch anything!" Sprinting down the stairs of her apartment building, Autumn burst into the cool evening air. Her wet clothes clung to her skin, making her shiver, but adrenaline kept her moving. She rounded the corner into the alleyway, her sneakers squelching with leftover mouthwash. Giggles echoed from a nearby hedge. Jumbo was currently playing hide-and-seek with a stray ginger cat. The giant toothbrush was attempting to camouflage himself by standing perfectly still next to a blue recycling bin, occasionally vibrating his bristles to make a high-pitched buzzing sound. "Psst! Jumbo!" Autumn hissed, darting toward the hedge. "Get back inside right now!" Jumbo turned his massive, plastic body toward her. His cartoonish, drawn-on eyes crinkled in delight. He saluted her with his handle, then did a little spin, spraying a light mist of peppermint-scented water onto the stray cat, which hissed and bolted over a fence. "This isn't a game," Autumn whispered fiercely, grabbing his slippery blue handle. "Ethan is upstairs. If he sees you, my life is ruined. Do you understand? Ruined! I will be expelled! I will have to move back in with my dad and his three ferrets!" Jumbo vibrated, a low, purring sound that felt suspiciously like laughter. He tapped his bristles against her forehead, leaving a small, wet circle of blue foam. Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the street. Autumn spun around. Jumbo had somehow managed to squeeze an entire tube of charcoal toothpaste onto the windshield of a parked police cruiser, drawing a massive, grinning face with perfect molars. "Stop it!" Autumn cried, lunging to grab him, but Jumbo vanished in a puff of sparkling blue dust, leaving behind only the scent of spearmint. --- Reappearing on the roof of her apartment building, Jumbo waved down at her. He was holding her missing set of keys—the ones she had lost three days ago under the couch—and was swinging them around his bristles like a lasso. The metal keys clinked merrily in the moonlight. "My keys!" Autumn gasped. She scrambled back up the fire escape, her heart pounding. She had to get him inside before the neighbors called the cops about a giant, glowing blue vandal or before Ethan decided to leave and saw her climbing the walls like a cat burglar. Panting, she climbed through her bathroom window, only to find Jumbo already standing in her living room, perfectly dry, leaning against her bookshelf as if he owned the place. He was casually dusting her textbooks with his bristles. Ethan was sitting on the couch, staring blankly at the giant toothbrush. He looked frozen, his fingers gripped tightly around his phone. Autumn froze on the windowsill, one leg inside, one leg outside. "Autumn?" Ethan said, his voice remarkably calm, though his eyes were wide with a mixture of terror and utter confusion. "Your... experimental mannequin... is in the living room." "Ethan," Autumn squeaked, scrambling inside and trying to block his view of Jumbo again, which was impossible given Jumbo's five-foot stature. "I can explain. It's... mobile. It has an automated mobility drive. Artificial intelligence. Very cutting-edge." Jumbo let out a soft, whistling sound, his bristles twitching as he gave Ethan a friendly wave with his plastic handle. Ethan stood up slowly, backing away toward the door. "Autumn, I think you've been studying too hard. That thing... it just winked at me. And it's... it's holding your keys." "It's a glitch!" Autumn yelled, her voice cracking under the weight of the lie. "A highly advanced, optical sensory glitch! The program is... simulating physical interactions to test spatial awareness!" She felt the crushing weight of her lies suffocating her. Her thesis, her reputation, her chance with Ethan—all of it was dissolving in a puddle of blue, minty chaos. Ethan reached for the doorknob, his eyes locked on Jumbo. "I should probably go. Let you... debug your mannequin." "Wait, Ethan, please!" Autumn begged, taking a step forward. Before Ethan can ask another question, Jumbo lets out a loud, bubbly burp, and a massive, glowing bubble containing Autumn's lost house keys drifts out of the window.
