Chapter 11 of 12
Chapter 11: Silence in the Stacks
969 words
Sweat dripped down the back of Autumn's neck, cold and persistent.
Her fingers trembled as she clutched her neon-pink highlighter, her knuckle bones showing white through her skin.
Absolute silence was supposed to be the one unbreakable rule of the university library’s fifth-floor archives. It was her sanctuary, her fortress of absolute predictability, where the books were organized by the library congress system and the students respected the quiet zone like a sacred temple.
Instead, a low, menacing hum vibrated through the heavy oak desk beneath her elbows, threatening to destroy everything.
*Bzzzzzz.*
Autumn stared at her laptop screen, trying to focus on her pathology notes, but her eyes kept darting to her social media feed.
Whispers of bizarre sightings had hijacked every local news channel and student group chat over the last hour. She clicked on a live video stream, her heart hammering against her ribs as she watched the screen.
Videos showed a five-foot-tall, bright red toothbrush casually waiting in line at a local bakery, gesturing politely for a croissant. The cashier looked entirely bewildered, frozen in place as the massive plastic object tapped its non-existent foot in a display of impatience.
Another clip captured a lavender-colored giant brush attempting to run on a treadmill at the campus recreation center, throwing the entire gym into a frenzy. It kept slipping on the belt, its bristles spraying soapy water over the neighboring runners who screamed and fled.
People in the comment sections were convinced it was a high-concept marketing stunt for a new dental start-up, but Autumn knew the horrifying truth.
Panic fluttered in her chest like a trapped bird. Jumbo was not an isolated incident; his chaotic, reality-bending kind was spreading across the city, doing human things and catching everyone completely off guard.
A few feet away from her, a stressed pre-med student glared up from his chemistry textbook, his eyes bloodshot and dark circles hanging heavy under his lids. He tapped his pencil sharply against his desk, signaling his growing irritation.
If she got kicked out of the library today, she would fail her advanced clinical seminar.
Professor Sterling's deadline was in exactly three hours, and her notes were still a disorganized mess of highlighted margins and half-finished summaries.
Right now, however, her academic future was the least of her worries.
Under her hand, the double-walled stainless-steel water bottle began to rattle. It was her favorite pastel pink bottle, supposedly vacuum-sealed, but now it was hopping on the wooden table like a miniature jackhammer.
With a gasp, Autumn grabbed the bottle and yanked it to her chest, holding it tight against her ribs.
Glares shot from every direction. Dozens of highly stressed, sleep-deprived students raised their heads from their laptops, their expressions ranging from annoyance to outright hostility.
Directly across the room sat the ultimate threat.
Mrs. Gable, the legendary head librarian, sat at her circular mahogany desk. Her spectacles rested on the bridge of her sharp nose, and her posture was as rigid as a steel rod.
Rumors claimed Mrs. Gable could hear a page rip from three floors away and had once banned a student for a whole semester just for sighing too loudly during midterms.
Desperately, Autumn pressed the vibrating bottle harder against her collarbone, trying to absorb the frantic rattling with her own body.
Cold metal pressed through her thin cardigan, but the heat radiating from the container was intense, smelling faintly of synthetic wintergreen.
It vibrated with a rhythmic, pulsing energy that felt suspiciously like a muffled, mocking laugh. Jumbo was inside, liquefied and ecstatic, turning her premium water flask into a ticking time bomb of chaos.
Squeezing her eyes shut, Autumn tried to shrink into her chair, her face burning with a fiery, hot embarrassment that turned her cheeks bright crimson.
A collective murmur of discontent rippled through the quiet zone.
A student with a massive stack of flashcards leaned over, hissing, "Hey! Some of us are trying to pass our boards here! Turn off your phone!"
"My phone is off," Autumn whispered back frantically, her voice cracking under the pressure. "I'm sorry. It's... it's just a stubborn water filter. I have it under control."
Steam began to hiss from the edges of the metal cap, carrying a potent scent of powerful spearmint.
Before she could even attempt to run for the exit, the pressure inside the bottle reached its absolute limit.
*Pop!*
Cap and collar exploded off the bottle like a cork from a shaken champagne bottle, flying straight up into the air and bouncing off the historic portrait of the university's founder with a loud clang.
Sparkling, neon-blue mist erupted from the open neck of the bottle, shooting upward in a miniature geyser before expanding outward in a thick, shimmering cloud.
Spearmint vapor rolled across the desks, smelling so incredibly fresh that it cleared everyone's sinuses instantly.
Dozens of students opened their mouths to complain, inhaling the sparkling blue mist.
Soft sighs echoed through the room. The pre-med student who had been glaring at her blinked slowly, his eyes fluttering as his head slumped forward, landing perfectly in the middle of his open chemistry textbook.
Over by the window, three law students dropped their highlighters simultaneously, their bodies relaxing into their chairs as they drifted off into a deep, peaceful slumber.
Within seconds, the heavy silence of the library was replaced by a chorus of soft, rhythmic snoring. The sparkling blue vapor seemed to carry a magical, localized sleep property, wiping out the stress and anxiety of every living soul in the room.
Autumn stood frozen in the center of the sleeping room, her pink water bottle now completely empty and cool to the touch.
As the head librarian's head hits her desk with a soft thud, a massive blue plastic bristles starts poking out of Autumn’s backpack.
