The Platonic Snapped

“Zhivka…” Grozdan’s voice was a rasp, barely audible above the ringing in her ears, but it cut through the dust and the disorientation. His eyes, though hazy with pain, were fixed on hers, a dawning, terrifying recognition blooming in their depths. Ice crept along Zhivka's ribs. No, no, no. This couldn't be happening. He couldn't know. Her entire plan to peacefully bake her way through conqueror-dom, to foster pups and have polite tea with a terrifying king, hinged on absolute anonymity from her past. If he knew, he would never stop. He would hunt her, drag her back, demand… demands she couldn't fulfill, not anymore. “I am *not* Zhivka!” she blurted, her voice still resonating with the giant's deep rumble, which made the flattened earth tremble faintly. Her gaze darted to Boshko, who was slowly pushing himself out of a fresh crater, his fur singed. The marmot-shifter’s eyes, usually wide with fear, snapped to hers with frantic urgency. He made a desperate, exaggerated throat-slitting gesture. “I am… Blood-Stalker Susan!” Zhivka announced, projecting Boshko's most recent, horrifyingly effective mistranslation. She tried to sound menacing, but the conqueror's deep voice made it sound more like a cheerful declaration of a new hobby. She clutched the muffin platter tighter, a sudden thought striking her. The muffins! They were still intact. Maybe one would make him feel better? Before she could offer a blueberry scone of solace, Krasimir, his silver-streaked hair caked with mud, sprang to his feet with an alpha’s raw, furious snarl. He had recovered faster than the other assassins, his face a thundercloud. “Seize him! Dungeon! Deepest cell! And someone get a broom for this… *incident*.” His gaze, usually calm, flickered to Zhivka’s distressed face, then to the unmoving form of Grozdan, and a low growl vibrated in his chest. Rough hands, belonging to a dozen of Krasimir's deadliest rogues who had also somehow survived being flattened, hauled Grozdan’s limp form away. As he was dragged past, Grozdan tried to twist his head, his hazy eyes locking onto Zhivka’s. “Zhivka… you can’t hide. I know you.” His voice was weaker now, a raw whisper of defiance. The rogues merely kicked him harder. Zhivka watched him go, a cold draft catching the nape of her neck. He knew. He truly knew. Her shoulders slumped. The sheer, overwhelming politeness that had always been her defining trait, that had kept her from holding a single grudge, now felt like a lead weight. This wasn’t just about her anymore. Grozdan wouldn’t stop. Not until he found her, or what he believed was *his* Zhivka. And in doing so, he would endanger everyone she had come to care for in this bizarre, brutal stronghold. The pups. The surprisingly thoughtful Krasimir. Even the perpetually hyperventilating Boshko. Her pacifism, her kindness, her desire for a purely platonic, baked-goods-fueled existence, had just leveled a small mountain and put everyone in the Gloom Keep in danger. She could not just bake her way out of this. She had to become strong. She had to learn to control *this*. The colossal vessel's power. “Vukasin!” Zhivka’s voice boomed, startling the legendary mentor, who had just managed to extricate himself from a pile of rubble, looking even more horrified than usual. “More Doom Gaze lessons! And less pillow-fluffing. Immediately!” Vukasin blinked, then let out a wail that echoed through the shattered cavern. “Oh, the spirits weep! She embraces the path of cataclysm!” Later that evening, the dungeon air hung thick with the scent of damp stone and a faint, acrid tang of despair. Grozdan was shackled to a cold, grimy wall, his head lolling. His wounds, though superficial, were numerous, marked by Krasimir’s boots and the blunt impact of Zhivka’s shockwave. Zhivka had slipped away from her 'Doom Gaze' practice, a small tin of medicinal salves tucked under her arm. She couldn’t stand the thought of anyone suffering, not even her deluded, rabid ex. “Grozdan?” Her voice was soft, not the warrior's booming resonance. She knelt before him, setting the tin down. His eyes flickered open, pain clouding them, then a glint of surprise. “I brought some salve. And a clean rag. For your cuts.” He stared at her, recognition warring with disbelief. “You… you came here?” A broken, mirthless laugh rattled in his chest. “To tend to *me*? After everything?” “Well, you’re hurt,” Zhivka said simply, her brow furrowed with concern. “It’s only polite. Even if you did try to… um… abduct me.” She uncorked the tin, the herbal scent filling the small cell. “This will help with the bruising. And this one is for the deeper scrapes.” She carefully began dabbing a cool, green paste onto a cut on his cheek. His eyes narrowed, watching her. The sheer, unadulterated kindness on her face. The precise, gentle movements of her hands. It was undeniably her. His Zhivka. But in this… this body. Possessive fury flared hot in his throat. “You still smell of lavender and hearth smoke, Zhivka,” he rasped, a predatory gleam entering his eyes. “Even with all that brimstone.” He reached out a hand, surprisingly quick, and seized her wrist. Before she could react, he brought her hand to his mouth, his teeth, sharpened by his alpha status, closing down on her flesh. A sharp, stinging pain shot through her. “Ow!” Zhivka yelped, pulling back. A single bead of crimson bloomed on her skin where his teeth had pierced. Grozdan swallowed, a savage, triumphant grin spreading across his face. “That’s it,” he muttered, his voice thick with a horrifying blend of vindication and madness. “The taste… the bond. It’s still there. You’re still mine, Zhivka. No matter what body you wear, no matter what king you hide with, you still belong to me!” He laughed then, a maniacal cackle that echoed off the damp stone walls, utterly convinced of his triumph. A shadow detached itself from the deeper gloom of the corridor. Krasimir stepped into the dim light of the cell, his face a mask of cold fury. His eyes, usually a calm, glacial blue, now pulsed with a lethal, alpha-red glow, a simmering rage barely contained. His voice, a low rumble that vibrated through the very stones, held no trace of his usual polite weariness. “She is my roommate, Grozdan, and if you touch her again, I will evict your head from your shoulders.”
