Chapter 9 of 10
The Tide Breaks
1.1k words
The roaring surge of black, frigid water slammed through the shattered entrance, tearing apart the splintered oak like matchsticks. Vezza, already fighting the crushing gravity, gasped as the icy deluge hit her, dragging at her sturdy maid's uniform. Debris — splintered wood, snapped candelabras, and even a few flailing, drowned guards — swirled around her. Through the churning chaos, Laro advanced, a nascent storm made flesh. The cerulean fire in his eyes burned with a primal intensity, reflecting off the oily shimmer of his skin. His human frame stretched and warped, muscles bulging, hands elongating into clawed fins that tore through the water with terrifying ease. He wasn't just *in* the water; he *was* the water, a conduit for its raw, destructive power.
“My boy!” Grand-Preceptor Vharr’s voice, though strained by the rising water that now lapped at his waist, still carried its usual sneering confidence. He floated slightly, kept aloft by a faint, sickly green aura. “You finally embrace your heritage! Wonderful! The tide will rise, the city will fall… and it will all be *mine* to command!” He spread his hands, a manic grin splitting his aged face. “You are merely the key, Laro, the trigger. I will be the master of the Drowned World!”
Laro didn't even glance at Vharr. His gaze, fixed solely on Vezza, was a maelstrom of protective rage and pain. The water around him began to coalesce, forming immense, crushing currents that slammed against the vaulted masonry, grinding masonry to powder under the strain. Above, the crystal chandelier, already cracked from Tilla's earlier efforts, began to sway precariously.

Vezza watched the sheer, overwhelming power radiating from Laro, a power that threatened to tear the entire academy, and by extension, Murro-Vell, to shreds. His anger wasn't just for Vharr; it was a boundless, ancient wrath, fueled by every slight, every hunger pang, every icy night he’d endured. And now, it was directed at anyone who dared threaten *her*. He was truly becoming the monster she had read about.
Her enhanced strength was still active, a humming resilience under her skin. She had 5,000 Sparks left; enough for a final, decisive move. But first, Vharr. The old man’s cackling was a grating annoyance, and his continued existence threatened to further destabilize Laro.
Vezza took a deep breath, the frigid water stinging her nostrils. “Oh, you want to be master of the Drowned World, do you, you moldy squid-snatcher?” she yelled, her voice cutting through the roar of the tide. “How about you start with a *kraken*?”
Vharr’s triumphant smirk faltered. His eyes darted to the large, circular grate in the stone floor, where the juvenile kraken, swollen on runoff and enraged by the chaos, thrashed in the rising brine. It was a mottled grey-green, its tentacles thick as Vezza’s torso, each suction cup lined with jagged chitin.
Without hesitation, Vezza launched herself forward. The water, though dense, barely impeded her demigod-level speed. She shot across the submerged flagstones, a blur of motion directly toward Vharr. He barely had time to register her charge before her boot connected with his midsection, a precise, brutal punt that sent him spiraling through the churning water like a discarded rag doll.
“Agh!” Vharr shrieked, his sickly green aura sputtering as he tumbled helplessly. He sailed through the water, straight into the gaping maw of the kraken, which, sensing fresh meat, snapped its tentacles around him with a sickening crunch. The water around them frothed red for a moment before the creature dragged its meal deeper into the newly created chasm.

“Finally,” Vezza muttered, shaking out her leg, a trickle of satisfaction warming her. One down, one apocalyptic catastrophe to go. She turned back to Laro. His human features were almost entirely gone, replaced by something ancient and oceanic. His eyes were pure cerulean fire, devoid of recognition, fixed on some distant horizon. The raw power emanating from him intensified, pushing the water higher, shaking the very foundations of the academy. He was losing himself. He was going to drown them all.
“Laro!” she roared, but her voice was swallowed by the escalating tide. He began to rise, leviating above the debris-strewn water, his form shifting, growing, becoming truly monstrous. He was preparing to unleash the full, cataclysmic force of the Abyssal Tide. She couldn't let him.
Her eyes scanned the immediate surroundings. Marble pillars, cracked and crumbling, still jutted from the water. Perfect. She grit her teeth. Aggressive pampering, indeed.
Vezza pushed off a submerged statue, her enhanced legs propelling her with explosive force across the water. She bounded from floating table to splintered desk, a human projectile aiming for the center of the storm. Laro, now a looming, semi-transparent titan of brine and rage, didn't even register her approach. His focus was solely on the destruction he was about to unleash upon the world that had harmed her.
She leaped, clearing a collapsing archway, and soared through the air, right at Laro's chest. Her hands, calloused and strong, locked around his shifting, watery torso. He was immense, but her buffed strength was beyond reason. She hauled him down, ignoring the shock of his abyssal energy, ignoring the primal roar that ripped from his throat. With a guttural yell, Vezza pivoted in mid-air, channeling all her frustration, all her desperate hope for retirement, into one final, ludicrous act of violence.
“Take *that*, you overgrown fish-boy!” she snarled, and with a grunt that echoed through the flooded chamber, she brutally suplexed the transforming, leviating Laro. He crashed headfirst onto the thickest remaining marble pillar, which groaned under the impact and fractured into countless pieces. The sound was like a thunderclap, echoing even over the churning water. The entire hall shuddered.
Laro crumpled, his monstrous form rapidly receding, shimmering back into something recognizably human. He slid down the shattered pillar, splashing into the deep water at its base. The cerulean fire in his eyes dimmed, flickered, and then stabilized into a more familiar, though still intensely bright, blue. The surging water around them began to calm, the destructive currents receding as if an unseen hand had turned a dial.
He lay there for a moment, half-submerged, staring up at Vezza who stood panting on a chunk of the now-demolished pillar. Water dripped from her hair and uniform, but her expression was one of fierce, exhausted triumph. He looked utterly bewildered, then, slowly, a soft, dopey smile spread across his face. His eyes, fixed on her, were no longer filled with world-ending rage, but with an open, almost painfully vulnerable adoration.
