Chapter 3 of 10

Kraken Scrubbers and Broken Knuckles

1.5k words

A jagged line of agony shot up Vezza’s arm, brighter than any bioluminescent algae. Her wrist joint hung at an impossible angle, cartilage protesting its sudden, catastrophic re-arrangement. A choked gasp escaped her, tasting of dust and the freezing air. Laro’s phosphorescent indigo eyes, wide and unnervingly lucid, were fixed on her. The numbing bite radiating from his skin intensified, chilling her to the bone. This was it. The moment he snapped. The promised catastrophe wasn’t just coming; it was already here, manifesting in a frost-addled kid with an iron hold on her. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. He was supposed to be weak, shivering, pliable. Not a glowing, bone-crushing menace. [Emergency Alert: Anomaly surge detected ahead of schedule! Critical threat to handler proximity!] His other hand, surprisingly gentle, reached out. His thumb brushed over the shattered joint. A cold, black light pulsed from his fingertips, not outward, but *inward*, like a drain drawing darkness into her flesh. A strange, humming warmth bloomed beneath her skin, fighting the agony. She watched, horrified and mesmerized, as the mangled bone knit itself back together. The snapping sound was the worst of it—a low, wet *crunch* as shattered fragments reformed, followed by a dull throb. The pain receded, leaving behind a phantom ache and a burning sensation. His grip loosened, then he let go completely. Where her wrist had been a ruin, now a faint, intricate black tattoo pulsed just beneath her skin, tracing the veins of her inner arm. It looked like an inky whirlpool curled around her sinew. It didn’t hurt, but it felt… present. Like an extra layer of skin she hadn't asked for. Laro’s eyes, still glowing, tracked the mark. His lips parted, a rasping sound escaping. “Mine,” he whispered, the single word a chilling promise. Then, as suddenly as they’d flared, the indigo lights in his eyes dimmed, receding back into the murky gray. His hand went limp. He collapsed back onto the freezing cot, breath shallow once more, utterly unconscious. Vezza stared at her perfectly restored, albeit marked, wrist. She flexed it, testing the movement. No pain. No stiffness. Just the unnerving tattoo and the memory of bone-shattering agony. “You absolute menace,” she muttered, shaking her head. “You couldn’t just *ask* me for help? You had to break my arm and then possess me with your forbidden deep-sea magic? What even *was* that?!” [System Alert: Target's latent Abyssal Resonance temporarily stabilized. Handler action: Successful.] “Successful?!” Vezza hissed at the ceiling. “He just used a forbidden, probably soul-binding spell on me! This is not 'successful,' this is 'deeply concerning and probably a violation of several intergalactic treaties on sentient body autonomy!'” She glared at the unconscious boy. “Fine. You get a pass this time, you little terror. But if you try to put another magical-possession-tattoo on me, I’m personally finding a way to de-villainize you with a spork.” The next morning, the black mark on Vezza’s wrist was still there, a faint, elegant swirl just beneath the skin. It felt like a low hum, a constant, subtle reminder of Laro’s terrifying power and sudden, bizarre act of healing. She stared at it over her meager breakfast ration of nutrient paste, a grimace twisting her face. This wasn’t a ticket home; this was a one-way trip to becoming a magical-slave-maid to a future deep-sea tyrant. Fantastic. Her shift began as usual, scrubbing the intricate, barnacle-encrusted carvings along the lower corridors of the Drowned Conservatory. The air was perpetually damp, smelling of brine and ancient stone. The muffled thrum of the deep-sea pumps was a constant companion, a dull ache in her ears. She heard the whispers long before she saw anything. “Cephalopod-pen shift,” a maid muttered to another, eyes fixed on the flagstones. “That Laro boy. They say something’s planned.” Vezza’s gut twisted. Vharr. He wasn’t wasting any time. She tossed her scrubbing brush aside, leaving a half-cleaned section of coral relief. “Right. Workplace safety check.” The Vivarium was a vast, echoing chamber, its center dominated by colossal, reinforced glass cisterns. Here, highborn apprentices studied deep-water predators native to Murro-Vell. Laro was hunched over, his back to the main viewing platform, diligently scraping green crust from the interior of a juvenile tentacle-beast's enclosure. The creature itself, a mottled green and purple coil with a yellow, calculating pupil, watched him with mild interest. It was perhaps the size of a small boat, but its beak alone could snap a limb. Suddenly, the main doors to the platform swung open with a theatrical flourish. Three impeccably dressed youths, their academy silk shimmering with intricate sea-fire patterns, strode in. Their leader, a sneering youth with slicked-back hair and dark, glassy irises, sneered toward the catwalk. He was a scion of the affluent House of Krill-Loch, known for their predatory loan-sharking and even more predatory aquatic spellcasting. “Look what we have here,” the ringleader drawled, his voice carrying an unpleasant echo. “The Trench Scrubber, hard at work.” His two cronies, a hulking brute named Gryk and a spindly girl with a cruel smile named Rhyl, snickered. Laro froze, his shoulders tensing. He didn’t turn around. He just kept scrubbing, his movements jerky and hurried. “Such diligence,” Rhyl purred, stepping closer to the tank controls. “It’s almost a shame to interrupt his precious duties.” The leader snapped his fingers. “Open the pen chute. Just an inch. Give our dear Laro a bit of… motivation.” Gryk grunted, moving to the emergency release lever. The students weren't supposed to have access to this. This was Vharr’s doing, Vezza knew. He was giving them free rein. Vezza's knuckles burned against her apron. This was it. The ‘accident’. Before Gryk could even touch the lever, Vezza burst through the doors, her maid uniform rumpled and her expression thunderous. “What in the name of the brine do you think you’re doing?!” she barked, her boots slamming against the catwalk. “Workplace safety violation! Harassment of a minor! Intent to endanger a sanctioned cleaning operative!” The noble boy spun around, his lip curling. “Look, it’s a servant. What are you going to do, polish us into submission?” “No,” Vezza snarled, her short fuse already sparking. “I’m going to personally ensure you never show your face in Murro-Vell again.” Without a moment’s hesitation, she launched herself forward. Her foot connected with Kithyn’s chest in a perfectly executed drop-kick, sending him flying. He let out a yelp of outrage as he tumbled backward, landing with a colossal *SPLASH* directly into the brine tank. The young terror, startled by the sudden intrusion, unfurled thick, rubbery arms. The aristocrat shrieked, thrashing wildly in the water as his expensive robes billowed. The beast, more curious than aggressive, began to prod him with a suction-cupped coil. “Anyone else want to question my commitment to health and safety protocols?!” Vezza yelled, turning her furious gaze on Gryk and Rhyl, who stood frozen, mouths agape. “This is a clear breach of protocol! You don’t release abyssal creatures without proper supervision! You don’t bully academy staff! And you *certainly* don’t try to drown the only person who can keep this entire place from becoming kraken chum!” Laro, who had turned at the first scream, was still frozen, his scraper clutched in a white-knuckled grip. His eyes, fixed on Vezza, had lost their dullness. The murky gray was replaced by an intense, burning blue, like the heart of a glacial tide. A faint sheen of ice bloomed on the interior of the tank wall around him, but it wasn't the out-of-control frost magic from before. This was controlled. Intentional. His scowl had melted, replaced by an unsettling, almost feral wonder. He looked at her like she was the most fascinating, terrifying thing he had ever seen. His lips parted, a silent, possessive hunger in his gaze. [System Alert: Target’s latent Abyssal Resonance flaring! Extreme emotional stimulus detected!] [Immediate action required: Stabilize target’s emotional state to prevent uncontrolled power surge. Option 1: Initiate physical contact (e.g., a kiss) to establish deep neurological connection and re-route abyssal energies. Bonus: +5,000 Salvation Sparks.] [Option 2: Allow target’s power to surge unchecked. Risk: Unpredictable damage, potential loss of life (e.g., pen beast devouring aristocrat). Penalty: -1,000 Salvation Sparks.] Vezza stared, aghast, at the glowing words. Kiss him? *Kiss* the future world-ending villain, the kid who’d just branded her forearm, to stop him from drowning the district? And *five thousand* points?! That was half her ticket home! But the alternative… letting the kraken eat the noble. A thousand was a lot to dock from her ledger, but watching that brat get dunked was almost worth the fee. The dandy choked on brine as suction pads clamped his ribs, dragging him down. The blue light in Laro’s eyes intensified, the ice on the tank wall spreading. He took a single, deliberate step towards the glass, his gaze never leaving Vezza's face. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Vezza muttered, her eyes darting between the thrashing noble, the encroaching ice, and Laro’s unnervingly focused gaze. “Fine. Fine! But if he gets any funny ideas, I’m blaming you, System!”
