Chapter 1 of 2

UNDER THE STARRY SKIES

1.1k words

- PARKLANDS, NAIROBI. -10:49 PM E. A. T The lights killed instantly, plunging the massive Parklands arena into a heartbeat of pitch-black silence. Then, the venue exploded. A deafening roar erupted from thousands of fans, a thunderous wall of sound that shook the steel rafters. Glowsticks painted the dark in pulsing waves of neon purple and gold as international tourists and local fans alike screamed The Luminaries' name, standing on chairs and pounding against the barricades. On stage, the four girls stood frozen in their final, sharp pose, sweat gleaming on their collarbones under the sudden burst of blinding white spotlights. As the music faded into raw acoustic echo, they broke formation and lined up at the edge of the catwalk, holding hands to take their final bow. The crowd went wild, but inside Zethra’s head, everything fell dead quiet. She felt the cool air of the Parklands night filtering in through the stage vents, biting against her heated skin. She looked out at the sea of blurred faces, holding her breath as she bent at the waist, sweeping her arm down in a perfectly rehearsed, elegant bow. Look at them, Zethra thought, her eyes fixed on the glossy black floorboards of the stage. They’re screaming for a girl who doesn't even exist. She held the bow, feeling the heavy weight of her microphone in her trembling hand. They call me the Rising Star. They print my face on posters from Nairobi to Tokyo, telling me I’m living the dream. But this isn't a dream. It’s a beautifully decorated cage, and every single applaud is just another bar being welded shut around me. Beside her, the other members were smiling, waving, soaking in the glory of a sold-out show. Zethra slowly straightened up, forcing a flawless, glittering smile onto her lips as she blew a kiss to the upper balcony. I gave up my sleep, my health, my entire youth just to stand in the center of this stage. But being at the top of someone else's system just makes you their favorite doll. I’m tired of being played. She turned with the group, taking one final, synchronized bow toward the VIP boxes where the agency executives sat behind dark glass. Enjoy the show while it lasts, she thought, her smile sharpening, cold and resolute beneath the blazing stadium lights. Because I’m not going to be your puppet forever. I'm going to take this whole empire down, and rebuild it with my own hands. With a final wave, she turned and led The Luminaries off the stage, disappearing into the dark of the backstage corridor. After brushing off the congratulations from Coach Vane and dodging the press team, Zethra slipped out through a quiet side entrance near Forest Road. Julian was waiting under the shade of a Jacaranda tree. Instead of catching a ride, they walked. The quiet, leafy residential streets of Parklands offered a stark contrast to the chaotic stadium just blocks away. Zethra pulled her hood up, her feet dragging against the pavement. Her stage glamour felt like armor she was dying to strip off. "I can't keep doing this, Julian," she admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper. She wrapped her arms around herself against the chill. "Everyone keeps calling me the rising star, but I feel like I'm burning out before I even reach the top. It's constant performance, constant perfection. I'm so exhausted." They stopped beneath a break in the canopy where the open night sky peeked through. High above the streetlights, a single bright star pierced through the thin haze. Zethra stood still, lifting a pale, trembling hand toward the sky. She reached up, her fingers stretching toward that distant point of light as if trying to pluck it straight out of the heavens. But no matter how high she stood on her tiptoes, her hand closed on empty air. Her arm dropped back to her side, heavy and useless. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes, reflecting the dim amber streetlamp. "I try so hard to reach it," she whispered, her voice cracking as she turned to Julian. She reached out and placed her small, warm hand over his chest, looking directly into his eyes with raw, desperate devotion. "I can't reach that star out there, Julian. I really can't... But I promise you, I will be your star." Julian walked beside her, keeping his pace slow, his hands tucked deep in his pockets as he looked down at her. He reached out, gently wiping a smudge of glitter from her cheek. "Then change it. Reach the top, tear the old system down, and build yours. I'm right behind you." The next morning, the exhaustion was forced beneath the surface. Zethra was back at the rehearsal complex early, the morning sun casting long shadows across the dance studio floor. Coach Vane walked in, tapping a stack of updated schedules against his palm. "Huge update, Zethra," Vane announced, a sharp grin on his face. "The cross-continental project with the male lead has been fast-tracked. Because of last night's crowd response from the tourists and international press, the producers moved your position. You aren't just in the front line anymore—you're set up directly beside him as the co-center." Zethra’s heart took a massive leap. Standing directly alongside the male lead was the ultimate platform—the exact leverage she needed to take control of her career and execute the change she desperately wanted. Excitement surged through her veins, washing away the fatigue from the night before. "I'll be ready," she said, her voice brimming with renewed determination as she grabbed her gear to prep for partner rehearsals. She quickly dropped a text to Julian: ‘They put me right beside the male lead. This is the main stage. Everything changes now.’ A few streets away in a quiet Parklands apartment, Julian sat by a sunlit window, overlooking the canopy of trees lining the neighborhood. His phone buzzed on the glass table. He read the screen, his face completely unreadable. Then, a slow, tucked smile spread across his lips—a subtle, calculated expression that didn't reach his cold, quiet eyes. He lowered the phone, looking at a file resting on his desk containing full internal roster details for the upcoming showcase. "Right beside him," Julian murmured, his smile sharpening into something dangerous. "Just where you need to be."
