Run. That single command screamed through Leo's mind, drowning out the frantic thudding of his heart. Behind him, the sky bled a horrific crimson, dominated by that colossal, lidless eye that had peeled open the heavens. Every nerve in his body vibrated with a primal, evolutionary terror. Panic clawed at his chest, a cold, oily grip that squeezed his lungs. He remembered the feeling of being helpless. In his past life, he had been a corporate cog, worked to the bone and then discarded like a piece of broken machinery when he burnt out. He had vowed never to be weak again. But this world was a different kind of monster. Here, the strong didn't just exploit you; they ate your soul. Sky-born horrors watched from above, waiting to devour anything that grew too bright. Blinded by panic, he ran blindly, guided only by the faint, eerie glow of luminescent moss clinging to the basalt walls. Jagged volcanic rocks sliced through the soles of his boots as he plunged headlong into the jagged maw of the Obsidian Gorge. Darkness swallowed him as he descended deeper into the subterranean trench. Sulfur choked the air, burning his nostrils with the stench of rotten eggs and molten stone. Deep within the winding, black-walled ravines, the temperature soared, pressing against his sweat-slicked skin like a physical weight. His breath came in ragged, desperate gasps. With every step, his boots kicked up sharp black dust that sparkled with an unnatural, violent violet light. Vibrations shook the cavern floor, a constant, low-frequency rumble that vibrated through his teeth and up his spine. Escape was his only option. --- A sudden, icy chime echoed directly inside his skull, shattering the heavy silence. *System Alert: Host has entered a high-density mana zone (Obsidian Gorge).* *Action detected: Deep inhalation of atmospheric mana.* *Applying Thousandfold Experience Multiplier...* *[Basic Respiration] has leveled up! [Basic Respiration] is now Level 24... Level 105... Level 500... Level 1000 (MAX).* *[Mana Sensitivity] has leveled up! [Mana Sensitivity] is now Level 1000 (MAX).* Pain exploded behind Leo's eyes, white-hot and absolute. His chest expanded with terrifying force, his ribs creaking under a sudden, impossible pressure. It felt as though someone had poured liquid fire directly down his trachea. Every single alveoli in his lungs ballooned, drawing in vast quantities of the heavy, sulfurous air. Along with the air came the raw, unfiltered energy of the world. Mana surged into his bloodstream like a tidal wave of needles. His senses shattered under the influx of raw power. Deep grinding of tectonic plates miles beneath his feet sounded like a deafening roar that threatened to split his skull. Vivid veins of magic pulsing through the volcanic rock walls around him became blinding in their intensity. Even the microscopic dust motes floating in the air shone like miniature suns. Sensory overload wrecked his nervous system. His brain screamed, unable to process the infinite ocean of sensory data flooding his consciousness. Dropping to his knees, he clawed at his throat as he tried to stop breathing. Lungs demanded more, drawing in the highly concentrated magic of the gorge with greedy, unstoppable hunger. Drowning in light, he writhed on the stone floor. Suffocating in sound, he felt his mind fracturing. *Focus,* he screamed at himself inside his own mind. *If you don't stop this, you die.* Memories of the cosmic eye flashed in his mind. That creature was looking for him. That eye was searching for this exact spike of energy. He was a signal flare in the dark, screaming his location to the gods. Survival meant silence. Mental walls had to be built. Forcing the raging torrent of mana into a lead-lined vault in his chest, he clamped down. Dragging the wild energy back into his core, he wrapped it in layers of mental steel. *System Alert: Host is attempting to mask mana signature.* *Action detected: Active suppression of personal energy.* *Applying Thousandfold Experience Multiplier...* *[Mana Concealment] skill acquired.* *[Mana Concealment] has leveled up! [Mana Concealment] is now Level 1000 (MAX).* Suddenly, the blinding light faded. Deafening roar of the earth quieted to a dull, manageable hum. Leo slumped against the basalt wall, his skin slick with cold sweat, his heart hammering against his ribs. He had managed to pull a veil over his skyrocketing power level, but the terror remained. This world was a trap. Every breath he took made him stronger, but every unit of strength drew him closer to the jaws of whatever entities ruled this sky. He was a lamb being fattened for the slaughter, and the slaughterhouse was global. --- A low, wet cough echoed from the shadows ahead. Leo froze, his hand instinctively dropping to the hilt of the rusty iron bar he still clutched. His newly heightened senses picked up the distinct scent of copper and charred flesh. Someone was waiting in the darkness of the cavern. "Who's there?" Leo rasped, his voice sounding raw and foreign to his own ears. Slowly, a figure dragged itself out from behind a massive obsidian pillar. Blood coated the man's torn leather vest. A broken iron collar hung loosely around his neck, sparking with residual blue electricity. His face was a roadmap of scars, his eyes wild and desperate, like a cornered animal. In his right hand, he clutched a heavy, runic crossbow, its bolt aimed directly at Leo's chest. "Well, well," the man sneered, his voice wet with blood. "A runaway rat." Leo didn't move. He kept his breathing shallow, his posture seemingly weak and trembling. "I don't want any trouble," Leo said, keeping his voice trembling to sell the act. Laughter burst from Kaelen, a harsh, hacking sound that ended in a bloody spit. "Trouble is all there is in the Gorge, boy," the man growled, taking a shaky step forward. "Name's Kaelen. I was a driver before the beasts tore my squad apart. Now, I need a ticket out of here." His eyes locked onto Leo's clean, uninjured skin and the sheer lack of visible wounds. "You look remarkably whole for someone who survived the surface," Kaelen muttered, his grip tightening on the crossbow. "And you're carrying a weapon. Give me your food, your water, and whatever magical trinket you're using to mask your presence. Do it now, or I'll put a bolt through your throat." Leo's mind raced, analyzing the distance between them. Ten paces. Orange runes on the side of the crossbow glowed a faint, unstable light. Under normal circumstances, a human couldn't outrun a crossbow bolt. But Leo wasn't normal anymore. His Level 15 Basic Swordsmanship and his maximized reflexes meant the world around him felt sluggish, almost liquid. Listening closely, he heard the ragged, uneven beat of Kaelen's failing heart. Sickening dread settled in his gut. If he let Kaelen fire, the noise and the magic would draw attention. He had to end this instantly. Kaelen took another step, his face twisting in anger. "I said, hand it over! Don't make me—" Leo moved. To Kaelen, it must have looked like a blur. In a fraction of a second, Leo closed the distance, his boots barely making a sound on the gravel. He swung the rusty iron bar. Not to kill, but to disarm. Iron clashed against metal with a resounding, violent bang. Shattered wood and metal shards flew into the darkness as the runic weapon exploded from the sheer force of the impact. Kaelen gasped, his fingers broken and bleeding from the violence of the strike. Before the slave-driver could scream, Leo grabbed him by the throat, slamming him hard against the cavern wall. Stone cracked under the impact. Leo's grip was like an iron vise, completely cutting off the older man's breath. "I told you," Leo whispered, his voice dangerously low, "I don't want any trouble." Kaelen stared at him, his pupils dilated with sheer, unadulterated terror. He tried to claw at Leo's wrist, but his fingers couldn't even budge the young man's grip. Leo's physical strength was far beyond what a human of his build should possess. And yet, the dread in Leo's own chest only grew. Ambient mana in the air was still trying to feed into him, trying to push him higher, faster. A massive bonfire was what he would become if his control slipped for even a second. Terrifying truth weighed on him like lead. These parasitic deities, these Harbingers, they would find him. Every level he gained was another pound of flesh for them to harvest. This wasn't ascension; he was fattening himself up for a divine feast. Kaelen's eyes darted to the blue sparks still flickering on his broken iron collar. A horrific realization seemed to dawn on the wounded slave-driver. His gaze locked onto Leo's face, seeing the depth of the power hidden beneath the surface. Instinct warned Leo that the man was about to do something desperate. A dark, mocking grin spread across Kaelen's bloody face. Metal around his neck began to glow with an intense, volatile blue light. It was a slave-driver's fail-safe, a soul-binding curse designed to detonate if the master died or was compromised. Seconds ticked away as the blue energy crackled violently, threatening to consume them both. Kaelen, gasping for breath, grins through blood-stained teeth and whispers, 'They see you, boy. The Harbingers are already sending their hounds to reap your bloated soul,' just before his collar explodes into a cloud of blue ash.
