Chapter 6 of 10
The Pesticide Protocol

Citra watched as the first strike team from the consortium's forces breached the boundary of the Zenith Canopy. They weren't just attacking; they were contaminating. Across the horizon, a sickly, chartreuse mist billowed from backpack-mounted sprayers, coating Bayu’s prize-winning Lailak Lilies in a vile, acidic film.
“No, not the lilacs!” Bayu shrieked, his voice cracking with genuine horror. He wasn't looking at the armored warriors, nor the mana-cannons they were setting up. His eyes were fixed on the wilting petals, dissolving into goo. “Those were almost ready for the annual bloom contest! My heirloom varieties!”
[ALERT: Agricultural Zone 'Zenith Canopy' under targeted chemical assault. Threat level: Catastrophic Flora Degradation.]
Citra stared at the scorched ground in revulsion. To ruin the soil itself, even an ecosystem tangled with monster roots, was an atrocity.
“They’re using Sun-Cutter Defoliant,” she spat, her voice tight with disgust. “It’s banned across every civilized province. It corrodes even mana-imbued flora down to ash. They’re trying to starve the Spire’s roots, Bayu.”
Bayu’s face contorted, a rare expression of pure, unadulterated outrage. He looked at the dying lilacs, then at the advancing mercenaries, their boots crushing delicate ferns. “They wouldn’t dare,” he whispered, a dangerous calm settling over him. “They wouldn’t *dare* desecrate my garden.” He whipped out his Mana-Tiller, its polished obsidian blade gleaming.
[New objective: Protect Horticultural Assets from Defoliant-Induced Necrosis. Recommended counter-measure: Activate 'Pest Defense Routine'.]
“Pest Defense Routine?” Bayu muttered, tapping furiously on the Mana-Tiller’s screen. “Is that like, a bigger watering can?”
Mbah Suro, perched on a rock, calmly peeled a sweet rambutan. “A watering can, Bayu, that sprays justice. And a very potent fertilizer.”
Bayu tapped the screen. “Fine. Let's see what this routine does. Hopefully, it’ll at least make the weeds sprout faster on *their* side.”
A low thrum vibrated through the ground. The gigantic brassica beds, which moments ago had been placid, leafy spheres, began to expand. Their outer leaves stiffened, turning a mottled grey-green, hard as plating. From their centers, where before juicy hearts had resided, gaping maws opened, revealing serrated edges and a pulsing core.
[Pesticide Protocol activated. Crop-Type: 'Vanguard Cabbage' mutated into 'Artillery Cabbage'. Weaponization status: Active.]
A mercenary commander in plate pointed a gauntleted finger. “Push forward! Burn through this… this overgrown weed patch! Our intel says the core is just past the pumpkin fields!”
Before he could finish, a ribbed leaf twitched. A massive, compacted seed, the size of a pumpkin itself, launched from its maw with a deafening *THWUMMP*. It arced through the air, trailing phosphorescent mana, and slammed into Kaelani’s armored division with the force of a battering ram. Three soldiers were instantly flattened into fertilizer, their defoliant tanks exploding in a shower of toxic mist.
“By the Mother Tree!” Kaelani bellowed, scrambling to his feet amidst the chaos. “The vegetables are attacking!”
Citra squinted against the flying mulch. “Bayu!” she shouted over the thud of artillery and screaming soldiers. “They’re trying to flank around the Lychee Grove! Turn the mortars there! And the heavy sappers are converging on the Durian Walls, they’ll use thermal charges!”
Bayu, still marveling at his aggressive produce, looked at her, then back at his Mana-Tiller. “Wait, you know their plans? Like, *all* their plans?”
“I helped *write* their tactical manuals, you overgrown sprout!” Citra snapped, pointing with furious precision. “The Lychee Grove is vulnerable from above! They’ll be deploying hover-skiffs with flame-throwers next!”
Bayu grinned. “From above? Excellent. Nugget, get ready for a delivery run!”
High above, Nugget, the magnificent Vidyadhara Griffin, let out a triumphant shriek. He dipped and weaved through the stray mana bolts, a basket full of freshly picked, glowing Srikaya fruit strapped to his back. He wasn’t just a courier; he was the Spire’s most agile flyer, a blur of golden feathers and razor talons.
A hidden crew on the ridge anticipated the bird's flight. From a concealed position, a newly deployed anti-air turret, a relic from the ancient wars, locked onto Nugget. A shimmering blue bolt, thick as a tree trunk, tore through the sky.
“Nugget, look out!” Bayu yelled, his voice laced with genuine panic. Nugget shrieked, a sound of agony, as the bolt struck his wing. He tumbled, a feathered comet plummeting towards the forest floor, his precious Srikaya basket bouncing wildly.
Kala, who had been supervising a particularly stubborn patch of yam vines with a scowl, froze. Her head snapped skyward, tracking the falling griffin. Her eyes, usually a dull amber, flared with a primal, blood-red light. Nugget. Her favorite source of fresh radish deliveries. The one creature who dared to land on her territory without getting eviscerated. The one who brought her *snacks*.
[ALERT: Guardian 'Kala, Rakshasa Sovereign' entering 'Berserk Protocol'. Threat level: Extinction Event.]
A guttural roar ripped from Kala’s throat, vibrating through the limestone. The very ground trembled. The straw hat she’d been wearing, a gift from Bayu, disintegrated into dust. Her form distended, muscles bulging, skin hardening into obsidian scales. Horns, jagged as shattered mountains, erupted from her brow. Her eyes became twin pools of molten fury. She vanished in a blur of crimson and shadow, streaking towards Nugget’s crash site, a furious guardian unleashed.
Bayu, momentarily stunned by Kala’s transformation, was jolted by a new alert. “What now?” he groaned.
[WARNING: Unauthorized Trans-Dimensional Teleportation Signature Detected. Intruder located in Primary Greenhouse Sector. Threat level: Imminent.]
Citra spun around, her face paling. “The greenhouse? That’s where you keep the experimental crops!”
A shimmering distortion rippled in the center of Bayu’s prized greenhouse, right among the glowing, mana-rich tomato plants. A figure materialized, clad in opulent, power-imbued robes, a sneer plastered on his face. A man in gilded corporate vestments stood sneering, clutching a forbidden, mana-siphoning artifact. He took one look at the delicate, vibrant flora surrounding him, and his sneer widened. “Finally. The source of the Scourge. Time to uproot this… garden.”
