Chapter 2: The Screaming Wall

1.2k words

Whispers slithered from the wall of faces. They pulsed, a grotesque quilt of human anguish, eyes wide and mouths agape in silent, ceaseless screams. Each feature stretched, contorted, then dissolved into the next, an endless, writhing current of torment. King shuddered, a low rumble vibrating through his massive frame. He recognized the primal fear emanating from the grotesque barrier. It was not alive in the way a creature was, but a manifestation of countless agonies, a living prison of despair. Acid dripped from his inner jaw, sizzling on the damp, yellow carpet. He extended a claw, sharp as obsidian, towards the nearest face. It was a woman’s, her eyes hollow, pupils dilated with terror. As his claw neared, the face distended, pulling back as if repelled, yet remaining fixed to the horrific mosaic. He recoiled. No physical contact seemed possible, or rather, advisable. This was not a foe to tear apart, but something else entirely, a barrier of pure, concentrated suffering. It offered no purchase, no weakness to exploit. Around him, the warrior drones clicked, their heads swiveling, sensing their leader’s indecision. They awaited a command, their instinct to destroy momentarily stalled by the unsettling sight. Even the Queen, nestled deeper within the temporary hive cluster, sent a low, questioning psionic pulse. Retreat. King turned, his tail sweeping the stained carpet. The elevator exit, a glimmer of hope just moments ago, was utterly sealed by this monstrous entity. There was no going forward through that particular exit. Not yet. His chitin scraped against the featureless wall as he led his hive away. The humming fluorescent lights overhead seemed to grow louder, more insistent, drilling into their senses. The air, thick with the scent of stale moisture and industrial cleaner, felt heavy, suffocating. They moved with practiced efficiency, a living current of dark, segmented bodies against the oppressive yellow. Drones fanned out, their elongated skulls scanning every corner, every seam in the wallpaper. Warriors held the flanks, ready to engage any threat. The vulnerable, the young, and the Queen remained at the center, protected. Hours passed. The monotonous landscape of Level 0 remained unbroken. Identical rooms bled into identical corridors, an endless labyrinth of yellow walls and damp carpet. The persistent hum of the lights was a constant irritant, a high-pitched whine that grated on their hypersensitive hearing. King felt the strain. This environment was wrong. No shadows. No organic matter. No prey. Only the sterile, dizzying repetition. It was a prison designed to break the mind, and though xenomorphs had no 'minds' in the human sense, the lack of stimulation, the unnatural sameness, was unsettling. His psionic connection to the Queen thrummed with her growing agitation. She needed biomass to rebuild, to lay new eggs. This place offered nothing but existential dread. The hive could not thrive here. It could not even survive indefinitely. Movement. A flicker in the periphery. A drone, scouting ahead, sent a sharp alert. King surged forward, his legs pumping, acid dripping from his jaws. His warriors followed, their chitinous plates rattling softly. Ahead, three figures skittered across the floor, low to the ground. They were humanoid in shape, but thin, almost skeletal, their limbs unnaturally long and jointed. Their skin was pale, stretched taut, and their heads were devoid of features save for wide, grinning mouths filled with needle-like teeth. Hounds. Their movements were jerky, erratic, like puppets on tangled strings. They moved with surprising speed, closing the distance to the lead drone. One leaped, a guttural snarl tearing from its lipless mouth. The drone met it head-on, its inner jaw extending, tearing through the Hound's thin chest. Pale, viscous fluid spurted, but the creature barely reacted, its companions already swarming the xenomorph, claws tearing at its carapace. King roared, a sound of pure fury. He slammed into the Hounds, his tail lashing, impaling one through the spine. Its body twitched violently before going limp. Another warrior, its acid-laced blood hissing as it splashed onto the carpet, dispatched a second Hound with a swift head bite. Short work. But the Hounds were tenacious, and their numbers, though small here, hinted at more. Their pale forms dissolved into dust upon death, leaving no biomass, no sustenance. Another frustration for the King. He checked the injured drone. A gash across its leg, but not debilitating. Its loyalty was absolute. He sent a mental command: *Advance. Search for egress.* The hive resumed its grim trek. They moved through a longer corridor, the yellow walls seeming to press in. The hum intensified, a maddening buzz that made the very air vibrate. King felt a strange distortion, a pressure building behind his ocular domes. Suddenly, the texture changed. The wallpaper ended abruptly, replaced by smooth, concrete walls. The fluorescent hum quieted, replaced by a low, rhythmic thrumming, like a distant machine. The scent of ozone filled the air. They had found something. An anomaly in the endless yellow. Ahead, a single, unadorned steel door stood slightly ajar. Blackness pooled in the gap, absolute and inviting, a stark contrast to the oppressive yellow. King approached cautiously, his senses on high alert. No sound from within, no scent of life, yet the air felt colder, charged with an unseen energy. He pushed the door open further with his claw. It swung inward silently, revealing a vast, cavernous space, plunged into an inky gloom that swallowed the artificial light. Something *breathed* within that darkness. A slow, rasping inhalation, followed by an even slower, shuddering exhalation. It was enormous. King’s internal sensors registered immense heat, a furnace-like core radiating through the void. From the depths of the blackness, two pinpricks of crimson light flared, vast and malevolent, like twin suns rising in a starless sky. They fixed on the xenomorphs, unwavering. And then, a voice, not spoken, but vibrating directly within King's very being, a resonant, ancient whisper that promised either salvation or utter annihilation. *Welcome, little ones.* It paused. *You have come home.*
