Chapter 6: Echoes in the Forest
1.2k words
Cool air brushed Lucius's face. He pushed through a screen of ferns, the damp scent of earth and decaying leaves filling his lungs. Sunlight dappled through the canopy, painting shifting patterns on the forest floor. This hunt, organized by the estate guards for practice, was a mere pretense. His true quarry lay deeper, beckoning him with an almost silent call.
He remembered the fleeting vision, the intricate, shimmering threads of magic that pulsed just beyond his normal sight. He’d felt them in the estate gardens, but here, in the wild, untamed woods, the sensation promised to be magnified.
Slowly, his footsteps grew softer, his focus sharper. He ignored the faint tracks of deer and boar that the other hunters would pursue. His path diverged, leading him away from the familiar, towards the older, denser parts of the Varel lands.
A faint hum vibrated in the air, a subtle thrum against his ears that no one else seemed to perceive. It was the forest itself, breathing, living, a complex weave of mana that he was only just learning to discern.
Pushing a low-hanging branch aside, he stepped into a pocket of deeper silence. The birdsong, ever present moments ago, had vanished. The light grew dim, even though the sun still sat high overhead. A chill snaked up his spine, not from the temperature, but from an unsettling quiet.
His hand instinctively went to the hilt of his practice sword. It felt cold against his palm. His senses strained, searching for any disruption in the unnatural stillness. The vibrant greens of the mosses and leaves around him seemed muted, almost as if a subtle filter had been applied to his vision.
He scanned the ancient trees, their thick trunks scarred with centuries of growth. A patch of shadow, darker than any natural shade, caught his eye. It clung to the base of an enormous oak, rippling at its edges, defying the still air.
Drawing closer, Lucius felt a growing unease. The shadows weren't just deep; they seemed to absorb light, actively draining the color from the surrounding foliage. Leaves near its edges had begun to brown, despite the healthy vitality of the rest of the tree.
A guttural sound, like stones grinding together, scraped through the quiet. It emanated from within the abnormal shadow. His breath hitched. This was no ordinary forest creature. This felt… wrong.
Something shifted in the darkness. A form began to coalesce, indistinct at first, then gaining a horrifying solidity. It was tall, gaunt, and impossibly thin, like a skeletal figure draped in midnight cloth. Its limbs were elongated, ending in sharp, jagged points that could be claws or broken bone.
No eyes were visible, only deeper pits of shadow where they should have been. Yet, Lucius felt a gaze, a cold, predatory focus pinning him in place. The creature's surface wasn't skin or fur; it was a writhing mass of corrupted energy, absorbing all ambient light.
Around it, the vibrant green of the forest floor bled away. Patches of moss turned to sickly grey dust. Even the rich brown of the earth seemed to lighten, becoming sterile and lifeless. A sickening realization bloomed in Lucius's chest, cold and hard.
Fear, raw and primal, clawed at his throat. This wasn't the fear of a beast. This was the terror of something unnatural, something that defied the very laws of life he knew. His mind raced, pulling at forgotten fragments of knowledge, ancient lore whispered in hushed tones.
He recognized it. The distorted, shadowed form, the way it drank color and vitality from its surroundings. This was a manifestation of the Shadow Blight. A sickness, a corruption he had only read about in the oldest, most guarded texts in his father's library. Legends spoke of it as a plague from a forgotten age, a threat long vanquished.
But it was here. Now. And it was real.
Gripping his sword tighter, Lucius swallowed past the sudden dryness in his mouth. His heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He was a Rank 1 Novice Swordsman, a fledgling spellcaster. What hope did he have against such an abomination?
The creature took a step, its movement fluid yet disjointed, like a broken doll brought to malevolent life. The air around it grew colder, heavy with a palpable sense of decay. It raised one of its jagged limbs, not in attack, but in a slow, deliberate motion, as if testing the space between them.
Lucius forced himself to breathe, to think. He couldn't flee. Not yet. He needed to understand. How could something like this exist? How could it have manifested so close to the Varel estate, unchecked, unseen?
His analytical ability, his unique cheat, flared to life, trying to process the impossible. It tried to categorize the creature, to dissect its energy signature. But the blight was anathema, a void that resisted definition, a negation of magic itself.
He saw faint, corrupted threads of energy pulsing from its core, black tendrils that snaked into the surrounding environment, sucking strength from the trees, from the very soil. It wasn't just draining life; it was perverting it, twisting the natural order.
A cold sweat slicked his skin. The creature seemed to sense his internal struggle, its shadowy form wavering slightly, as if amused. It emitted another grating sound, a low rumble that resonated deep in his bones.
This was not a mindless monster. There was a terrible intelligence behind those empty sockets, a malicious awareness that chilled him to the core. The legend wasn't just about a plague; it was about an insidious evil that sought to consume all light and life.
His hand trembled, but he held his ground. If this was truly the Shadow Blight, then his world, his new life, was in far greater danger than he could have ever imagined. His past trauma, his fear of isolation, felt insignificant compared to this universal threat.
He had to fight it. Or at least, understand it enough to report back. To warn his family, the Academy, the world. He couldn't let this ancient darkness consume everything. Not after he had finally found a place, a purpose.
Summoning a spark of courage, he took a preparatory stance, his sword point low. A small, almost imperceptible surge of mana flowed through his arm, a defensive spell taking root. It was a simple barrier, hardly enough, but it was all he had.
The shadowed creature tilted its head, an impossible movement that stretched its form even further. It watched him, a silent, menacing presence. Then, a low, rasping sound escaped it, like air being drawn into a collapsing cavern. It was a sound of profound malice, yet something else lay beneath it, something that clawed at the edges of Lucius's comprehension.
Its form expanded slightly, drawing in even more of the surrounding light, casting deeper, more oppressive shadows. The trees groaned, their branches drooping, their leaves shriveling faster now. The creature was preparing an attack.
Lucius braced himself, his knuckles white around his sword hilt. He focused on the flickering black threads emanating from the creature, trying to find a weakness, an anchor point, anything his ability could exploit. But it was pure corruption, a void.
The creature let out a guttural shriek, not of pain, but of something far more unsettling - recognition, as if it had been waiting for him.
