Chapter 13 — A Mistake

749 words

A week passed quietly. Nothing extraordinary happened. Cael went to school. He studied. He trained. He went home. The same routine repeated almost every day. And somehow, Cael didn't mind. There was something comfortable about it. One afternoon, their class received another practical exercise. This time, the teacher placed several small metal containers across the training field. "Today's exercise is simple." The students looked at the containers. "You'll move these containers from one side of the field to the other." Evan raised his hand. "That's it?" "That's it." Evan smiled. "Finally, something easy." The teacher looked at him. "With one condition." Evan's smile disappeared. "Of course." "You cannot touch the containers directly." The class began discussing possible methods. The teacher continued. "You must use your Affinity to move them. If a container is damaged, your score will be affected." Cael looked at the containers. They were light. But they were also empty and unstable. A strong gust of Wind could easily send one flying. Evan noticed the same thing. "These things are going to be annoying." Liora nodded. "They're probably designed that way." --- The exercise began. Students started moving their containers. Some used too much energy. Others moved too slowly. A few containers fell over. Cael watched carefully. When his turn came, he created a small current of Wind beneath the first container. It lifted slightly. He moved it forward. Then stopped. The container settled perfectly. One. Then two. Then three. He continued. His movements were slow. But stable. Liora was doing something similar with Water. She wrapped thin streams around the containers and guided them gently. Evan was having more trouble. He tried using Earth beneath the containers. The first one moved well. The second moved well. The third suddenly tilted. Evan reacted quickly. Earth rose beneath it. But his correction was too strong. The container flew sideways. Clang! It hit the ground. The class went quiet for a moment. Evan stared at it. "...Oops." Cael covered his mouth, trying not to laugh. Evan looked at him. "Don't." Cael laughed. "I'm sorry." "You're enjoying this." "A little." Liora also smiled. The teacher walked over. "Rell." "Yes, sir." "What happened?" "I corrected too quickly." The teacher nodded. "Exactly." He pointed toward the fallen container. "You solved the first problem by creating another." Evan looked down. "Yeah." "Don't immediately increase your output whenever something goes wrong." Evan nodded. "Understood." The teacher moved on. --- After class, Evan was unusually quiet. Cael noticed. "You okay?" "Yeah." "You look annoyed." "I'm annoyed at myself." Cael stopped walking. "Why?" "I knew what I was supposed to do." He looked at his hand. "But I still messed up." Liora joined them. "That's normal." Evan looked at her. "You think so?" "Of course." She smiled. "You can't improve if you never make mistakes." Cael nodded. "She's right." Evan looked at Cael. "Since when are you two motivational speakers?" Cael laughed. "We're just saying the obvious." Evan smiled. "Still annoying." --- That afternoon, they decided to train together. Evan placed several small rocks on the ground. "I'm going to try again." Cael nodded. Liora sat nearby. Evan raised his hand. Earth slowly formed beneath the first rock. He lifted it. Moved it. Stopped. Then lowered it. Perfect. He tried again. The second rock moved slightly faster. Evan reduced the energy. It stabilized. Again. And again. His movements became smoother. After several attempts, he sat down. "Better?" Cael nodded. "Much better." Liora smiled. "You stopped trying to fix everything with more power." Evan looked at his hands. "Yeah." He was quiet for a moment. "Maybe that's my problem." Cael looked at him. "What?" "I always think stronger means better." Cael thought about it. "Maybe it isn't just your problem." Evan looked at him. Cael glanced toward his own hand. "I used to think I needed stronger Wind too." Liora smiled. "So all three of us are learning the same thing." Cael nodded. "Maybe." --- The three of them continued training until the sun began to set. Cael noticed something. Their abilities hadn't suddenly become amazing. Evan was still a Beginner. Liora was still a Beginner. Cael was still a Beginner. But their control was improving. Slowly. Almost invisibly. And perhaps that was what growth really looked like. Not always a dramatic breakthrough. Sometimes it was simply making the same mistake... and making it a little less often the next time. Cael looked at the fading sky. For now, that was enough. Tomorrow, they would try again.
