Chapter 2 of 10
Tea, Sympathy, and Orbital Rifts

Ozan sighed, the S-Rank Void Panther—now named Umbra—a contented warmth against his ankle, a silent counterpoint to Leyla’s furious glare. The evaluator, pale as a nutrient paste sachet, had fled the forge as if pursued by a swarm of stellar hornets. Leyla, however, stayed planted where she was, her silver-streaked hair defying gravity around her face. She looked like a predator whose meal had just been replaced with a philosophical treatise. Her gaze, dark as a deep-space nebula, narrowed on him. She opened her mouth, then closed it, a series of frustrated clicks escaping. Finally, she pointed a finger at him, the tip trembling slightly. “You. What did you *do*?”
“I talked,” Ozan said, stifling a yawn. He stretched, feeling a peculiar lightness in his limbs he hadn’t possessed before Umbra’s ‘repair.’ “It’s what xenolinguists do. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe I have an early appointment with a pillow.”
Leyla spluttered. “A pillow? You just… you just manifested an S-Rank aura, the interface paired us for a mandatory rift dive, and you want a nap? Are you utterly devoid of self-preservation?”
“Self-preservation is best served by optimal rest cycles,” Ozan replied, already heading for the door. “See you in the rift, Apex Striker. Try not to spontaneously combust from sheer indignation before then.”
He left her standing amidst the soot and the lingering hum of the Void Panther’s power, utterly speechless. His bed, a thin cot in a shared dorm, had never felt more inviting.
The next morning, the Galata Ascendancy Institute hummed with a different kind of energy. The pre-rift briefing hall, usually a chaotic hub of chattering students, was hushed, every holographic screen displaying the imminent livestream of the Rift Zone Gamma-7 expedition. Corporate banners from NovaTech, Stellaris Arms, and Astral Forge adorned the walls, their logos shimmering. Guild leaders, their faces etched with a blend of anticipation and greed, watched from the upper tiers. Ozan, still half-asleep, slouched against a durasteel pillar, a lukewarm cup of synth-chai clutched in his hand. Burak, his usually cheerful face drawn with worry, hovered nearby.
“Ozan, are you sure about this?” Burak whispered, adjusting the battered holoscreens on his wrist. “The proctor’s been spreading rumors. They’re calling you the ‘Void-Tongue’ now, but not in a good way. And the pairing… Leyla’s not exactly known for her patience with ‘support’ classes.”
Ozan took a slow sip. “Relax, Burak. It’s just a glorified core-harvesting exercise. I’ll do my part, she’ll do hers, and then I’ll resume my quest for the perfect napping spot.”
Leyla strode into the briefing hall, a whirlwind of focused energy. Her combat armor, sleek and form-fitting in jet composite and chrome, accentuated her powerful build. Her gaze swept over the assembled students, dismissive, until it landed on Ozan. She stopped, a muscle twitching in her jaw. “Don’t you dare hold me back, Blacksmith. This isn’t a parlor trick contest. This is real.”
“My apologies, Apex Striker,” Ozan murmured, eyes half-closed. “I’ll endeavor to not get in the way of your heroic endeavors.”
Her lip curled, but before she could retort, the Institute Director’s booming voice filled the hall. “Students, today you face Rift Zone Gamma-7! Retrieve the necessary Cores, demonstrate your synergy, and remember: The Yildiz Hegemony thrives on the strength of its warriors!”
The cadets were shuttled into cavernous transport pods, then launched into the orbital void. The Rift Zone Gamma-7 appeared as a swirling vortex of emerald plasma, a tear in reality shimmering above the planet’s surface. Within minutes, Ozan and Leyla were dropped into a crumbling cityscape, the air thick with ozone and the scent of pulverized rock. The entire operation was broadcast live, a floating camera drone buzzing around them.
[RIFT ZONE GAMMA-7: INITIALIZING CORE HARVEST PROTOCOL]
Suddenly, a sneering voice crackled over the comms. “Well, well, if it isn’t the legendary ‘Void-Tongue’ and his babysitter.” Kaan, an elite vanguard from the prestigious Scythe-Claw Guild, sneered from an adjacent rooftop, his crimson armor glinting. “Heard you can talk to beasts. Let’s see you talk your way out of this.” With a flick of his wrist, Kaan activated a sonic lure, a high-frequency pulse that reverberated through the damaged structures. He aimed it not at Ozan, but at a collapsing archway fifty paces off.
From the rubble, a low growl erupted. The pavement trembled. A hulking form, made of volcanic basalt laced with molten magma, burst forth—an A-Rank Ignus Golem, its eyes burning with raw, untamed fury. Steam billowed from its shoulders, and its gargantuan claw-like hand swiped at the air, creating superheated eddies. It was clearly injured, a jagged rift running down its chest, oozing faint golden discharge.
“Kaan, you idiot!” Leyla roared, drawing her twin plasma blades, their cobalt edges humming. “That’s a traumatized A-rank! It’s unstable!”
Kaan merely chuckled. “Perfect. Let’s see what the trash blacksmith does when a real monster comes calling.” The Ignus Golem’s gaze, drawn by the lure, fixed on Ozan, its form radiating immense heat.
Ozan, however, remained utterly unperturbed. He reached into a small satchel he’d inexplicably brought, pulling out a compact, portable kettle, a ceramic mug, and a small tin of what appeared to be dried flowers. He set the vessel down on a patch of surprisingly intact pavement, the magma bear roaring its approach. The stone shook violently with each step. Leyla stared, mouth open, plasma blades still humming. “What in the void are you doing?”
“Brewing tea,” Ozan replied, calmly pouring water from a thermic flask into the pot. “Chamomile. Excellent for frayed nerves, especially after a traumatic incident.”
The Ignus Golem was now ten paces away, its molten breath scorching the air. Ozan looked up, not at its teeth, but at the glowing fissure on its chest. “Rough day, isn’t it?” he said, his voice soft, conversational. “I understand. Waking up somewhere unfamiliar, feeling… fractured. Like a part of you has been ripped away.” He gestured to the fissure. “That looks painful. Want to talk about it?”
Leyla nearly dropped her blades. The Ignus Golem, mid-stride, froze. Its radiant eyes, previously alight with aggression, flickered. A low rumble, different from its previous roars, vibrated through the flagstones. Ozan continued, describing the feeling of being disoriented, of a missing piece. He spoke of the urge to lash out when you just wanted to be whole again, of the strange, new body he inhabited, and the yearning for peace. He offered the steaming mug of chamomile tea, its subtle aroma wafting through the acrid air.

The Ignus Golem, its glassy dark skin now shining with a soft, steady internal light, lowered its heavy head. The fissure on its chest sealed, leaving only smooth, polished rock. It turned, its movements no longer aggressive but deliberate. It took the mug from Ozan with surprising gentleness, then looked towards Kaan, who was still gaping from the rooftop. With a grunt, the Golem hurled the empty mug into Kaan’s face, then backhanded the elite duelist with a casual swipe of its stone claw, sending him flying into a collapsing power conduit with a spectacular shower of sparks.
[RESONANCE MATRIX: IGNUS GOLEM (A-RANK) HAS ENGAGED HOSTILE TARGET. NEW DIRECTIVE: PROTECT BLACKSMITH OZAN.]
Leyla stood frozen, watching Kaan’s crumpled form, then the now placid, tea-drinking Ignus Golem, then Ozan, who was already packing up his kit. The live broadcast drone, having captured every impossible second, zoomed in, its lens flickering with frantic information packets. The entire Yildiz Hegemony was watching.
“You… you brewed tea for a magma beast,” Leyla finally managed, her voice a strained whisper, a mix of disbelief and something akin to awe. “And it… it got you revenge.”
“It just needed a good listener,” Ozan said, dusting off his hands. “And Kaan probably needed to learn some manners. Now, shall we continue? I believe there are cores to harvest, and my nap schedule is already severely compromised.”
Just then, the ground beneath them buckled. A section of an overhead skybridge, weakened by the Ignus Golem’s earlier rampage, groaned and began to tear free. A heavy durasteel beam, thick as a starship mast, plummeted directly towards Ozan.
Leyla didn’t think. Her reflexes, honed by countless battles, screamed. She lunged, throwing herself forward, a blur of jet plating and chrome. Her body slammed into Ozan, knocking him sideways just as the beam obliterated the spot where he’d been standing. They tumbled, her armor scraping against the rough concrete, his body a surprisingly solid weight against hers. Her arm instinctively wrapped around him, shielding his head from a jagged shard of flying debris. For a fleeting second, their bodies were pressed intimately close, the scent of ozone and his subtle, earthy aroma filling her senses. Her ribs ached from the impact, her pulse roaring in her ears from the sudden, fierce need to keep him in one piece.
Before she could process the collision, before Ozan could even utter a casual thanks, a faint, almost imperceptible *zing* cut through the air. A high-caliber sniper round, traveling faster than sound, tore through the space where Ozan’s head had been moments before. It was meant for him, an execution shot from a professional. But just as Leyla’s eyes registered the trajectory, a figure launched itself from the shattered remains of a distant comms tower. It was Burak, his face a mask of primal terror, arms outstretched. He intercepted the bullet, a sickening thud echoing through the comms. The shot struck his shoulder, embedding itself deep. He cried out, a raw, pained sound, collapsing to the asphalt, his body twitching. His loyal, clumsy friend, the fellow reject, had moved with the impossible speed and precision of an elite assassin.
