Chapter 40: The Full Confession

846 words

Static clung to Elias’s fingers, an echo of the grainy footage still burning behind his eyes. Sarah’s hand, cool and steady, found his arm, a silent anchor in the swirling chaos. Their shared gaze held a terrible knowledge. The truth, stark and undeniable, had finally revealed itself on a flickering screen. “We need to go,” she whispered, her voice a brittle edge. “Now.” Minutes later, the old DVR and Elias’s laptop lay secured in the backseat. Engine growled to life, a low rumble against the oppressive silence. The drive to Jonathan Vance’s sprawling estate felt impossibly short, yet stretched for an eternity. Shadows already lengthened across the manicured lawn. Elias parked directly in front of the grand oak doors, no pretense of a polite visit. He didn’t bother knocking gently. Pounded fist vibrated the heavy wood. Jonathan Vance, dressed in a silk robe, appeared, irritation etched on his handsome features. His eyes widened slightly at the sight of them, then narrowed in suspicion. “Elias? Sarah? What on earth…?” Jonathan started, his voice a practiced calm. Elias held up the laptop, its screen still displaying the crucial frame: Jonathan’s car, veering. No words were needed. Just the undeniable image. Jonathan’s jaw tightened. He glanced at the screen, then back at Elias, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze. A muscle ticked in his temple. He didn't invite them in. “What is this?” he demanded, a forced lightness in his tone. He tried to laugh, a hollow sound. Sarah stepped forward, her voice surprisingly strong. “It’s footage, Jonathan. From the old auto shop. Of that night.” His composure fractured. A tremor ran through his hand as he reached out, almost touching the screen, then recoiled. His eyes darted between Elias, Sarah, and the incriminating image. “That’s… that’s impossible,” he stammered, the practiced calm dissolving. “There’s nothing there.” Elias tilted the laptop, zooming slightly. The timestamp, the vehicle’s distinct features, the deliberate, violent swerve. It was all there. Jonathan saw it. Saw his life unraveling right before his eyes. His face paled, lips parting slightly, unable to form a sound. He looked like a man watching a ghost. “Why, Jonathan?” Sarah’s voice broke the silence, raw with pain. “Why Lily?” Jonathan crumpled. He leaned against the doorframe, suddenly looking much older, smaller. His gaze fell to the ground, shoulders shaking with a silent tremor. “I… I didn’t mean to.” He choked out the words, barely audible. “It was… an accident.” Elias stepped closer, his voice cold, devoid of sympathy. “That video says otherwise, Jonathan. It shows intent. Tell us the truth. All of it.” Panting breaths wracked his chest. Jonathan’s hands clutched at the expensive silk of his robe, knuckles white. Tears welled in his eyes, hot and sudden, tracking paths down his ashen cheeks. “She was going to tell everyone,” he whispered, the words a desperate confession. “About us. About the money. About everything.” His gaze lifted, pleading. “Lily… she found out about the embezzled funds. She confronted me. Said she’d expose me. Ruin me. Ruin everything I’d built.” Lily had been furious. Her voice, sharp and accusing, had echoed in his memory since that night. He had tried to calm her, to reason, but she was beyond it, incandescent with rage. “She threatened to go to the police. To the board. To *your* family, Elias,” Jonathan confessed, his voice cracking. “Said she had proof. Documents. She had copies.” Panic had seized him. Pure, unadulterated fear of losing everything. His reputation, his wealth, the carefully constructed facade of his life. All of it hanging by a thread. “We were arguing,” he continued, a fresh wave of tears. “In the car. She was screaming. Saying she’d expose me at the benefit gala, that very night. Humiliate me.” Driving fast, blindly, he’d seen Elias’s car. Lily’s car. A sickening, desperate thought had flashed through his mind, quick as lightning, dark as tar. If she couldn’t tell, then… “I just… I just wanted to stop her from telling anyone.”
