Chapter 10 of 10
Epitaph of the Assassin
1.2k words
A guttural groan ripped from Dragos's chest, not his own, but a sound born of the encroaching abyss. His skin stretched, cracking like parched earth, revealing jet scales beneath. Thick ribbons of pure night, blacker than any moonless sky, erupted from his shoulders, twisting into barbed appendages that writhed with malevolent sentience. His height surged, dwarfing the terrified faces of the surviving trainees. Where his eyes had been, twin points of frigid, pale light now burned, reflecting the horror in their gazes.
[ *BLIGHT: MONARCH'S ASCENSION. THE FINAL FORM.* ]
[ *FATALITY: WORLD CLEANSING INITIATED. TIME REMAINING: INDEFINITE.* ]
Zoran Vukovic, suspended in the collapsing core of the flesh-woven structure, watched with a chilling smile. His own form, bathed in the sickly green glow of absorbed souls, seemed almost insignificant before the nascent god that Dragos had become. “Yes,” Zoran hissed, his voice echoing with the Bell’s stolen power. “Embrace it, Dragos. Embrace the truth of your existence. You were never meant to save them. You were born to *end* them.”
Dragos didn’t speak. The voice that might have answered was buried under an avalanche of raw power, a primal hunger that thrummed through his mutated limbs. The world narrowed to a single, burning point: Zoran. The betrayer. The architect of his torment, and of Mirela’s suffering.
He moved, no longer a man but a blur of apocalyptic force. The ground beneath his feet buckled, the flesh-woven floor tearing open as he propelled himself forward. His new form was a weapon, each jet spike, each whip-like lash, an extension of his boundless rage. Zoran, still smiling, erected a barrier of emerald light, woven from countless stolen souls.
It burst like a soap bubble. Dragos’s clawed hand, now tipped with razors of solidified dread, tore through the essence, grabbing Zoran by the neck. The Guild Master gaped, his manic smile faltering as the true, suffocating darkness pressed in on him. He clawed at Dragos’s arm, his power flickering, useless.
“This is… not… how…” Zoran choked, his voice cracking.
“This is how *I* end it,” a voice boomed, guttural and ancient, yet undeniably Dragos’s. His grip tightened, crushing Zoran’s windpipe, forcing the life from him. The light in Zoran’s eyes faded, replaced by stark terror. With a final, explosive surge of power, Dragos ripped Zoran in half, a torrent of green energy and fragmented souls erupting from the dying Guild Master. The grotesque core of the cathedral, anchored to Zoran’s life force, buckled, then detonated in a shower of putrid flesh and crumbling stone.
[ *EPITAPH: BETRAYER'S RECKONING. THE MONARCH'S JUSTICE.* ]
[ *APOCALYPSE: WORLD CLEANSING ACCELERATED. MONARCH'S SPREAD: INEVITABLE.* ]
The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the groaning of the dying structure and the ragged breaths of the surviving Wardens. Dragos stood amidst the ruins, a towering, monstrous silhouette against the encroaching mist. Zoran was dead. The threat was gone. Yet, the rage did not subside. It intensified, twisting, seeking a new target. His pale eyes swept across the terrified faces of the students, the very people he had returned to protect. Their fear, their weakness, ignited a fresh spark of contempt within the burgeoning rot.
*Weak. All of them. Unworthy.* The thought was alien, yet undeniably present, thrumming in his transformed mind.
A cord of shadow lashed out, slicing through a crumbling support pillar. The Wardens screamed, scattering like panicked birds. Dragos took a step, another. The air around him grew cold, thick with malevolence. The ancient curse was not sated. It had merely found a new feast.
Then, a figure stepped into his path. Mirela Jovic, her face streaked with grime, her vibrant red sash a stark contrast to the surrounding gloom. She held a broken shard of stone from her shattered sword, but it wasn't the weapon that compelled him to pause. It was her gaze—unyielding, sorrowful, yet utterly devoid of fear.
“Dragos,” she whispered, her voice cutting through the roar of the encroaching blight. “Look at me.”
The pale lights in his eyes wavered, a brief, agonizing battle waging within his tainted mind. He saw her, truly saw her, through the haze of the monster. The one he loved. The one he swore to protect.
“It’s not you,” she said, stepping closer, her hand rising to touch the jet scales on his arm. The dark energy recoiled, his flesh hissing at her touch. She didn’t flinch. “This isn’t you, Dragos.”
He wanted to stop, to pull back, but the ancient curse was a tidal wave, pulling him under. A low snarl ripped from his chest. His hand, now a jagged claw, rose, ready to strike her down. She didn't move. Instead, with a sudden, decisive motion, she thrust the broken shard of stone forward, not into his monstrous hide, but into the unscaled flesh of his chest, directly over his heart.
[ *EPITAPH: CLEANSING HEARTH. THE RECLAMATION OF SOUL.* ]
[ *BLIGHT: MONARCH'S SEED, SEVERED. EXISTENCE RECALIBRATED.* ]
A searing, pure white light erupted from the shard, blossoming from his chest. It wasn’t a destructive light, but a purifying flame that burned away the apocalyptic shadow. Dragos screamed, a sound that was both agony and relief. The jet scales cracked, peeling away like dead skin. The towering form shrunk, the cords of night dissolving into wisps of mist. The pale lights in his eyes dimmed, replaced by the familiar, tired brown.
He collapsed, the last remnants of the blight burning away, leaving him human, exhausted, and bleeding. Mirela caught him, lowering him gently to the decaying floor. The shard fell from his chest, now nothing more than ordinary stone. The wound was shallow, sparing him by the Epitaph's precise, non-lethal power.
[ *THE BELL IS SILENT. THE SONG IS DONE.* ]
The Weeping Bell tolled one final, soft, clear note. Not sorrowful, not foreboding, but a sound of profound peace, echoing through the crumbling foundations of the ruined academy. Then, silence.
Days later, Dragos woke to the gentle warmth of sunlight on his face. The air smelled of clean linen and medicinal herbs. He was in an infirmary, a real one, not a makeshift cot in a forgotten corner. A small, wet nose nudged his cheek. Bratok, larger now, but still his fiercely loyal pup, licked his chin enthusiastically. Dragos smiled, a genuine, unburdened smile.
“Hey, boy,” he murmured, ruffling the scruff of the shadow-hound.
A soft laugh from beside the bed. Mirela Jovic, her red hair catching the sun, sat watching him. Her eyes, usually shadowed with worry, were bright and clear. She was no longer burdened by debt, no longer bound by false promises. She was free. And so was he.
She leaned in, her gaze searching his, a silent question passing between them. Dragos closed his eyes, tilting his head slightly, giving his answer. Her lips, soft and warm, met his, a long-awaited embrace that spoke of battles fought, sacrifices made, and a future finally, truly, their own.
